This is a Release Candidate build. It is our intention to submit this for review to Apple in the first week of December. Any help you could offer to stabilise and refine the product at this stage will be very gratefully received :) We won't be implementing any new features now for this version and we will be focusing on stabilising the product for the immediate future. We will obviously start adding more features again as soon as this update goes live.
Improvements / Fixes
- Default all raster exports to "Embed ICC Profile".
- Improved canvas rotation detection logic (to avoid accidentally rotating while zooming). - PDF import improvements. - PDF overprint export improvements. - Character panel improvements. - Fix for crash when trying to export selected item when there is no selection. - Fixed tabbing issues between some controls. - Localisation improvements. - Drawing fixes for OS X 10.7 when switching active document. - Fixed crash when resizing a document when only width or height are changed. -

Thanks. This should be fixed in the next beta.

Guys, I'd really recommend moving the artboard tool out from under the move tool for release, it really is too hidden and I don't think it's in the right place logically either. It can stand alone in the tool stack quite happily

Woot, thanks for this. Bye Illustrator!

Kip,
Rotation gesture on trackpad will rotate smoothly - also, you can assign keys for a Wacom tablet..
Hope this helps,
A

I hear ya!
All I'm asking for is a choice. i.e. a preference toggle for the toggle would do it. ;-)

Agreed here. Moreso an issue for me in Photo too, where I've worked on digital painting and constantly am hitting shortcut keys to switch tools, like the brush and eraser, and find that I'm being switched to the pixel brush, mixer brush, etc., so I have to type a key several times to get back to what I was going to before.
Edit: Yes, just a toggle to turn this on/off would be great. :)

I agree with April re the art board tool, but I have changed my keyshort and it's fine.
Regarding shortcuts. I changed my "deselect" keyshort to "command shift A" but it only works in pixel mode. Why is that?
Finally, is there a way to turn off the keyshort toggle? I really don't like the toggle workflow. When I hit V I want the move tool, when I hit C I want the corner tool. I'm finding I have to hit the keys twice a lot of the time to toggle to the right key. I see your reasoning with it but I would rather not have that behaviour.

Hi April,
You can customise the Tools shortcuts in Affinity Designer Beta ▸ Preferences, Shortcut Keyboards section. Change the second dropdown to Tools and edit the list as you see fit.
Alternatively, you can also go to menu View ▸ Customise Tools..., remove the combined Move/Artboard button and replace it with the independent buttons for the Move Tool and Artboard Tool.

Well, you know how the Apple Store works. You cannot charge for updates. I wouldn't expect any additional charges before Serif call the new version for 2.0 and sell it as a separate app on the store.
One could argue if the added functionality since version 1.0 shouldn't already qualify for a 2.0 version, though. The development pace has been tremendous.

Nice! so, looking forward to working with this release. Once again Affinity "THANKS" for all the hard work. We truly appreciate it.

What about measuring tools and scaling. Will it be in one of the next betas?

Why would someone do that? :( Matt will not be alone. The Miaow will be remembered.

Seems you’re on fire, guys … the third update within two weeks, if I counted correctly … but now it’s time for a great restful weekend, isn’t it? Well deserved … :D

Features / Improvements / Fixes
- Pixel selections now honour the current artboard when selecting all / inverting the selection - Deleting the last artboard will not cause you to have a document of zero dimensions - Fix for marching ants disappearing when the canvas is rotated - Fix for text blurring on some buttons in the UI for retina screens - Export persona’s Slice panel now sets the exportable state for all items in the selection, not just the current item - Fix for objects placed on the spread in an artboard document disappearing when moved again - Move Tool’s marquee drag is no longer hidden when the ‘Hide selection while dragging’ option is set - Fix for marquee selection within artboards not working - Artboard documents without transparency should draw empty artboards with an opaque background - Canvas rotation now makes the grid rotate properly - Many PDF export and import improvements - Fix for many crashes seen after loading documents with saved history where an artboard has been used - Fix for document view having visible borders at different zoom levels and pan locations - Fix snapping marker rendering in the Node Tool - The performance cat has lost his ‘Miaow’ in the Preferences dialog (and Matt mourns its loss) - Artboard labels can now be clicked to select the artboard easily. We’ll make this draggable for next time so you can drag the artboard from here too. -

AndyT fixed this yesterday - Malcolm from Games Faction has been begging for it for a while, so we thought we'd show him some support! ;) Should be in the next beta (hopefully tomorrow!) :)

Yes... kind of... Margins are also 'per-artboard' now but I haven't yet worked out what a margin means on a non-rectangular artboard! In the future, when you make your first artboard, all the guides, margins and snapping grid options from your document will be moved onto the first artboard, but right now they are just removed, sorry... :(
I'm just still working my way through a few things with artboards (and there's a constant discussion in the office about what should happen in different scenarios) - so it's very 'work-in-progress' but we'll get there quickly now :)
Thanks!
Matt

Yep... It would be wonderful...
Moreover... Imagine the possibility to export each artboard tree as a text file.
Using simple design guidelines (eg. name you layers using Bootstrap/Foundation classes...) your markup/css is done and you have things ready to prototype
:)

Thought I would share a lovely little project I have been working on this last couple of weeks.
Two 30page page educational books for UK charity Epilepsy Action. The story has been adapted for both a Dad and mum version.
To be published in hard form in 2016 also to be released as a digital download sometime before Christmas.
Artwork had to adhere to many readability standards and fonts had to follow NHS guidelines for accessibility.
All illustration was undertaken in Affinity Designer (of course) and page layout in InDesign (let change that soon hey, Serif Devs).

Is it me or the zooming outside an artboard is really weird and broken? What I mean is that if you try to zoom in outside a certain range, the view snaps closer to the artboard somehow automatically.

Using the beta for UI design so far I love the way that artboards are designed and working currently. This seems to be how the latest versions of Photoshop are solving for it as well—to me it's less confusing to have artboards incorporated with the layers panel.
This is just me, but I typically design by modules/sections of content, not by content types. So text, images, etc. are organized and moved around structurally. So for me it's a pretty rare case that I'm using layers that apply to multiple artboards, since the artboards are used for separations of concerns (content areas).
Of course this would be a bit different if we were planning for page layout, but that's what nifty Publisher pages will be for. :)

smallreflection reacted to paolo.limoncelli in Artboards feedback
But I don't want to do this... :)
If I'd need your scenario I'd rather place _modals in a layer outside all artboards and I'm done.
In Ai I usually create a layer named as the artboard, that contains all the sub-layers related.
This is the way I deal with UI stuff in Ai when a customer asks for Illustrator for some reasons.
Otherwise I use mainly Sketch for UI and it works as AD.
