Took some fudging around but what worked for me was to turn off the "move by whole pixels" button. :)

I don't know how hard is to do any of those shapes, but the Spiral shape has been requested before. I hope it's in their internal roadmap.

Got a library of hundred of these (version X6) that regularly get updated. Will they be supported? Haven't spotted any reference to this in anything I've read. Hope I've just missed it.

Go to Filters > Distort > Affine
 

Press Alt during dragging.

Artboards have multiple advantages. They can be used to have multiple document sizes on display, without having to create a new file for each size, so you can have the same design sized corrently for A4 Paper and an iPhone for example. Like it to the ability to spread multiple sheet of paper out on a table so you can see them all at once.
 
They also allow you to have pages for things like PDFs, each page being it's own artboard. You then have the option to export all the artboards or individual ones.
 
You can also get creative with document cropping using the artboard tool
 
Obviously this differs from the use of layers which restrict you to the single document working area.
 
Hope hat sheds a little light on it for you, best option is just to try it out and see what they do for you and you're workflow :)

Yes, despite the same extension, Ai brushes are not the same as regular Ai "project" files. Please check this page for more info.
Affinity Designer is able to open regular "project" Ai files if they were saved with Create PDF compatible file checked when the file was saved from Illustrator. That's what the PDF stream means in our webpage. Regarding brushes Affinity Designer supports are own format (.afbrushes) and Photoshop brushes (.abr).
There's a list of some Affinity brushes available on this page.
