  1. same here. I'm testing a new MacBookPro 16 M1Pro 16/16/1Tb on Monterey 12.0.1 and at first I thought it was a problem with my file server but I've made a comparison with my actual MacBookProRetina late2013 under osx Mojave 10.14.6 and my "old" computer with an Affinity Publisher file is faster on rendering. I don't know if I have to laugh yet but… well I have a month and a half to test this computer and I really hope this kind of nasty bugs will be resolved either within the Affinity apps and/or within osx Monterey. Did anyone tried 12.1beta?

  2. Mmmh… in artschool, silkscreen and Riso are back for some time now in the "young" ones for small press publication. And even when working with tech printing for luxury watchmakers with CMYK + 1 or 2 spots inks, the ability to add some supercrisp 1200dpi bitmap at 1-bit is still super handy, especially when you're working with trapping that let the original artworks remain crisp. So yeah, Affinity, I'm an independent graphic designer and image production tech for more than 25 years, and I truly believe 1-bit is still super useful. The recent update of Affinity Photo with some better channel option is going into the right direction but for highly efficient and professional works sadly the whole Affinity suite is not ready yet despite all the magnificent features.

    It's lacking:

    - the ability to work with true 1-bit bitmap, with the ability to spot colorizing

    - the ability to properly assign overprints and knockouts.

    - the ability create spot colours channels with transparency options in order to emulate some opaque inks like metallic ones and blend them with standard offset transparent ones.

    - the ability to preview channels one by one before exporting to a PDF in order to spot some eventual problem with overprints or knockouts.

    - a true Acrobat Pro PDF like software in the suite in order to check trap inks, etc.

    - the ability to scripts all the app in the Suite in order to automate some crucial professional workflow.

Well… 7 years after I've bought the first beta of Affinity Designer, I still hope and believe you can do it. It's almost there.

    Thanks.

  3. After teaching this morning with some students talking about color management and technical stuff, I've decided to test bitmap 1-bit 800dpi image with Affinity Publisher with spot colour the way I do it with Photoshop and/or InDesign and the images import just fine but when I'm trying to tint the bitmap image, I'm stumpling into a weird bug.

Here's the results with 2 spots colours with grayscale 800dpi images:

and the results with the same 2 spots colours but with the same bitmap images at 1-Bit 800dpi:

As you can see, Affinity is not able to render properly the simple 1-bit bitmap image. So strange. Please Affinity, this is the last thing I need to ditch Adobe for good. Thanks.

  4. Okay, again I'm raising up the request to support 1-bit bitmap into Affinity Photo channels in order to create artworks for screenprint like we can do it in Photoshop 2.0. I'm supporting Affinity since day one when I've bought the very first beta of Affinity Designer and I was eager to see the full potential. But seriously after almost 7 years, I've used it professionally only once. I still support it and advise it as an alternative to the entire Adobe mess but I need 1-bitmap support and a better way to assign spot colour to channel.

  6. Okay okay, to be clear, with the exact same PSD doc, the copy and paste pixel image reference is pasting either in FontLab 7 or Glyphs 3 just fine. Obviously, there's something wrong with the way APhoto is handling clipboard export.

@Old Bruce Yes, font editor works with vectors but with recent OpenType features, you can also work with bitmap image in order to create colored bitmap font. But in my case, @LibreTraining I'm working on a standard font but I copy paste image reference in bitmap in order to use it as a  typographical reference when I'm building my shapes.

Here, I've made some screenshot for you to see a bit better what's going on:

    1. here an example of the glyph "S" in APhoto

    2. here's the initial slot for letter "S" in FontLab 7

    3. here's the copy and pasting from APhoto 1.10.1 to FontLab 7

    4. and here's the copy and pasting from Adobe Photoshop to FontLab 7

well well. I've uploaded the .afphoto file of the "S" as well.

I hope it helps to fix the bug.

    Many thanks.

  7. hi @MEB

Sure… I have some pixel layers with typography photo archives, and I'm making a marquee selection around a letter and I hit cmd-C (normal) copy of the selected pixel layer. Then nothing is pasted into FontLab 7 neither Glyphs 3. Ideally, I'm working with a Level Adjustement layer in order to contrast a bit the typography and I hit cmd-shift-C (in order to have a Merged copy) of the same selection but again, …nada, nothing is pasted.

With the same PSD document, if I do exactly the same process cmd-C or even cmd-shift-C (Copy Merged), it works as expected with either Adobe Photoshop CS6 or CC 2021 with my MacBookPro 15 late 2013 and Mojave 10.14.6.

    Thx.

  8. Hey there,

I'm working on a type found project for signage and I've tested Affinity Photo to skew and treat my photo archives then I'm making selection of each letter, but when I copy the selection from Affinity Photo (version 1.10.1) in FontLab 7.2.0 (7649), nothing happens. It's blank.

I've tested in Photoshop CS6 or even the latest CC21 and it works as expected.

I'm going to post this in the FontLab forum as well but my guess is that is an Affinity Photo bug because it won't work in Glyphs 3 app either.

    Anybody tried on their side?

    thx.

  9. Okay, I'm an early beta user of all the Affinity suite and I'm convinced it's getting better and better after each update.

I hope I'm wrong but I can't find a way to work on photos or bitmap illustrations in Affinity Photo with duotones, tritones and even quadritones with spot colours via the channel like I'm doing it with Photoshop. Is it possible? It would really help me to get rid of Photoshop for good.

To clarify my process, in Photoshop, I'm working in Greyscale mode and then I'm adding spot colours via the Channel panel. Photoshop is then able to simulate in Grey mode the spot colours and simulate the overprint of each colour. While working with spot colours on illustrations, I'm having 1200 dpi A3 files in greyscale mode which gives me quite small files size while working with large high resolution files. This is super handy. Most people working with silkscreen print process know what I'm talking about.

I'd also love to be able to work with bitmap 1 bit image in Affinity Photo as well but I don't think I can do that either.

    Many thanks.

  10. I've tried these steps with the current 1.8.1 version and I have the same strange bug. If you move the first united to rectangle, then the 3 elements are unified as expected. A bit scary though, especially for more complex form because the workaround mentionned is not a workaround but a way to reproduce the issue.

    Thanks for fixing this quickly.

After pasting artwork (a vector in Affinity) but pasted as a pixel image from Affinity into Fontlab and then using Separate and Trace, the interpretation isn't always accurate,

This is actually the problem. A vector graphic should be copy and pasted as a vector graphic and not a pixel image. It makes no sense to do that and use the Trace interpretation of a software. The tracing tool of FontLab should be only used when designing font based on scans available on vector format.

As I said, it works with Illustrator so Affinity should be on paar. It's on the developers side now. I hope they will fix it soon.

  12. Hi, I'm currently testing FontLab 6.1.4 and Affinity Designer beta 1.7.0.11. I still can't copy and paste from Affinity Designer to FontLab in order to get it directly to vectors. It works with Adobe Illustrator CS6 though. Any news about this? I don't want to export and import and definitely don't want to use the Autotrace because it makes no sense to trace artworks that are already in vectors. Many thanks.
