It would also help if there's a way to generate a list of all set shortcuts - like a PDF file or even a simple TXT file as the .afshort is unreadable. This way we can print it and have it always nearby to help memorize our custom shortcuts faster. The panel in Affinity is very difficult to use, it's small and has two sets of lists - for the personas and for the categories which makes it impossible to easily access all the shortcuts at once.

As a newcomer to A.Photo, I'm trying to ease my way in by remapping the shortcuts, and it's been a fairly tedious task.  I've already lodged a bug for the ability to clear but not set the DELETE key, but the whole experience is sub optimal.
    1. The warning when you're using a similar keystroke is only slightly more helpful than simply telling me 'that key is in use'.  It tells me what command is using it, but not where, and there are literally dozens of options, each with potentially dozens more sub options to hunt through.  For someone unfamiliar with the software, trying to find that obscure command (is it a tool?  Is it under Document, Layer or Edit or Arrange or etc etc).  It would be super helpful if it had a button for 'clear other', and better still if it let me re-map that other command on the spot.  As a simple solution, one more option to list all the conflicts would help resolve the issues once I'm done remapping one group or another, otherwise it's nigh impossible to remember all the things that need fixing.
    2. The search function is basically useless.  A search for 'zoom' doesn't bring up any keyboard shortcuts at all, but there's at least nine (under 'View' if you're wondering).
    3. The window in which all this is performed is very tiny, and cannot be resized.  It's a needless additional frustration, selecting one of thirty five dropdowns and then scrolling through the commands therein.  The window could be adjustable, so the user can expand it to show every command at once.
    4. The Undo command, under 'Edit', always shows the last command used, instead of simply 'Undo'.  Until the user figures this out, it's misleading.  For example, right now it says 'Undo document properties' but if I use the brush, next time I view the settings it says 'Undo Paint Brush Tool'.  There's no need for this to change, is there?
I've mocked it up: a larger window (the blue line shows the tiny original size) and a popup to resolve conflicts.

Well, so many functions are missing in the list for shortcuts! On the other hand, there are "inc/dec brush size" options for every type of brush. Do you want to change this? You have to change it for each one separately! Why? Is there any situation I will simultaneously work with two or more brushes and change their sizes at the same time???
Please, at least give us an option to change this for all brushes at one place!

    I agree.
I have already reported all of these issues and suggestions in various bug reports and feature requests going back 2 years now.
Plus many functions simply do not appear, so can't have shortcuts set (for example Lock Children, Show Rotation Center, Polyline subtool of the Pen Tool)
A real shame there has been no improvement.
Perhaps it is still not too late for 1.7?

NFG reacted to NFlourish in is Crop to selection possible
    Because:
    A) I don't want or need multiple "copies" of a screenshot I'm trying to quickly crop extraneous junk out of to throw in a document
    B) Because there is nothing inherently "wrong" with a destructive workflow - your bias against such a workflow suggests a "my way or the highway" approach... there are lots of ways to accomplish tasks which work for different needs and approaches.
A crop-to-selection option seems insanely basic, functionality wise. It should function as described in the earlier comment ... crops to the smallest bounding box around the selection.
I have a screen shot that includes a bunch of extra space around the window I want to focus on. Open in Photoshop, magic-wand select the stuff around the content I want to keep, invert selection, crop to selection, save. No copy and paste from clipboard... no multiple copies. Don't care that it was destructive. And the annoying thing about the idea of "just use the Crop tool" is that it doesn't have the magic-wand edge detection ability. It would require me to zoom in and drag the crop-bound-box to specifically make sure I cropped to the border of the window content I want to keep in my screen shot. Magic wand quickly selected against the board with no deep inspection on my part.
We don't all use Affinity tools just for perfecting a gallery photo... it is already open on my Mac, so why not use it for the mundane tasks? Well.. apparently I shouldn't use it for mundane tasks because it is not well suited to such basic workflows. Bummer.
I get that there are ways to accomplish my goals in Affinity photo, but really, as a programmer, crop to selection seems fairly easy to implement... so why not help out those who you are trying to woo away from Photoshop-type applications? You catch more flies with honey.

NFG got a reaction from Alberto in Global key definitions/mouse wheel for changing brush size
I'd like to add a vote for this.  I use GIMP for most of my editing currently, and I can assign the mousewheel just like a keystroke.  My setup:

Global brush size is CTRL-ALT-wheel, opacity is CTRL-SHIFT-wheel, ALT-wheel for layer selection, and then I can whip through a 7-layer frequency separation without ever taking my eyes off the work at hand.
Even with only three modifier keys on Windows, that's 7 things I can adjust speedily with the same three keys and mousewheel.

Here is a macro that generates several layers, with progressively wider criteria for Frequency Separation. It creates layers with 2, 4, 8,16 and 32px separations, plus a residual layer.
    FreqSep Layers.afmacro
    Frequency Separation.afmacros
The first is a single macro, the second is a macro library containing this single macro.

NFG got a reaction from BiffBrown in Frequency Separation vs Wavelet Decompose
I'm a full time photographer, and I work primarily with people.  I do a -lot- of skin smoothing and fixing, and one of my most powerful tools is the Wavelet Decompose plugin for GIMP.  It's essentially the equivalent of using Frequency Separation, but with a one-step process to generate a user-definable number of layers.  For the 36-mpix images from my D800, I use 7 layers.

Each of these layers gives me the ability to reduce the detail in varying degrees of courseness.  Typically I use layers 3-5: 3 for small facial detail, 5 for the blotchiness us humans are so good at, and layer 4 for all things in between.  For really large areas like thighs, I use layer 6.  This is 4 layers I use on just about every single image.  I flick up and down the layers and adjust different layers of detail depending on where I'm working on the body, and how effective the changes are.

Frequency Separation, as seen in AP and Ps, seems like an intensely cumbersome way of accomplishing what is a smooth process in GIMP.

I'm looking for advice: is there a way to do something like this in AP?  (I've never used Ps, (I have a philosophical objection to Adobe) so I don't have this experience to bring over).

As near as I can tell, the process in AP requires me to manually select a degree of separation to work on -every time- I want to make a change.  Separate, edit, merge, separate differently, edit, merge, separate the first one again 'cause I missed a bit, edit, merge, repeat ad nauseum.

Is this really how it works, or am I missing something?  Any recommendations would be cheerfully accepted, 'cause most of AP is great, but this is like 80% of my workflow and as I understand it, it's ...  less than ideal.  #totesdiplomatic

    Thanks in advance.   ^_^

As a long-term Mac user, I don't get it what this has to do with macOS. This behavior is just wrong.   Merge means to merge existing things together into a new one and not to make a new one and also keep the old things.

Using the Layers -> Merge Visible command, AP creates a new layer without removing the existing ones.  I expect all visible layers to be merged into a one layer and then the individual visible layers be deleted.  This is how basically every other application works.

    Is this the expected behaviour?

(Merge Down works as I expect: combines two layers into one, so that only one remains.)

You contact these people when there are features you'd like to see in the product you want to use.

I like Affinity's software, I like the way they run, mostly, but there are things they do that are weird, features that I think should be in there or work differently, and things that are bugs.

We're not complaining and I think you're looking at this from a really weird perspective if you think we are.  We're collaboratively attempting to build a better product.

Hi Guys, as was established in post #5 by NFG, this is simply a bug in the Windows version - I suspect that parameter has not been correctly wired up to the backend so the resize will look poor because it isn't using the sampler you just told it to! This will obviously be resolved very soon. Sorry for any inconvenience in the meantime :)

NFG got a reaction from RicardoHEM in Live Projection - editing is very cumbersome
When trying to edit an equirectangular image, every time I make a change, the new content is applied to a new layer which doesn't 'stick' to the projection layer.  For example, if I paste a sticker onto someone's face and then resume rotating the spherical image, the sticker remains in the center of the screen while the scene moves behind it.

Why doesn't the new layer remain attached to the scene layer?  If I have a crowd of faces to put stickers on, it seems to make sense that I'd apply one, scroll a bit, apply the next, scroll a bit, etc.  Then I could apply effects or mask areas or perform other functions en masse, but currently I have to merge the layers after each edit, greatly reducing the usefulness of the equirectangular editing feature.

Aha!  This is what I have been looking for.  There's nothing about this in the HELP system that I could find.

It's a very convoluted adjustment though, I'd really prefer to have two keypresses instead of two mouse-buttons.  Also, I have to say I prefer the wheel for adjusting things, instead of mouse movements.  I'm old, my reflex motions don't adapt quickly.  ;)

It's a bit wish-list-y, but I'd love to be able to change these commands.

NFG reacted to JET_Affinity in Rotating maintains original height/width (etc)
The Reset Selection Box is still problematic in that it still fails to update when the Reset Selection Box is clicked. Example:

    1. Rectangle Tool: Draw a rectangle.
    2. Transform Palette: Set its height and width values to 1 in.
    3. Transform Palette: Enter a rotation value of 45°.
    4. Click the Reset Selection Box button.

The orthogonal rotation box displays, but the width and height values in the Transform palette remain set to 1 in. You have to:

    5. Click the Move Tool: Then the values in W and H fields update.

Clicking the Move Tool should not be necessary to cause the values displayed in the Transform palette to update. They should update as soon as the Reset Selection Box is displayed. Understand, I'm not talking about leaving an active field in the Transform palette uncommitted (cursor still in the edit box). Continue:

    6. Deselect by clicking the white space.
    7. Select the rectangle. Its transformed bounding box returns.
    8. Click the Reset Selection Box button.

Again, the temporary un-rotated (orthogonal) Selection Box is displayed, but the values in the Transform palette still show the object's transformed bounding box values (1" in W and H; 45° in R). But this time, you already have the Move Tool selected. So you have to:

    9. Switch to the Node Tool
    or:
    9. Drag the Rectangle a pixel or so with the already selected Move tool...

...in order to get the Transform palette values to update to the measures of the "reset" bounding box which is already displayed.

Again, it should not be necessary to switch to one of the selection tools in order to cause the values in the Transform Palette to update when the orthogonal Selection Box is already displayed.

This latency in updating the Transform palette when the Reset Transform Box is clicked is the problem I was trying to get across in earlier posts about this.

At least, that failure for the Transform values to update as soon as the Reset Transform Box is clicked needs to be fixed. But beyond that (even though it is a separate but related issue), an actual permanent resetting of the bounding box should be possible. I appreciate that Affinity retains the transformed values by default. That is superior to other programs. But one still often desires to deliberately and permanently zero a selection's transform values, and that missing feature should be provided as well.

Why would you group and ungroup objects not being actively worked on? That aside, even if you are actively working on them there's no need to ungroup them first: Ctrl-click on Windows (Cmd-click on a Mac?) will select an object in a group.

Regarding the initial layer up/down thing experiment. Gotcha. Interesting. Could even be user defined.... Visual or List mode? Hope you log it as a feature request.
You will probably think it's an horrific workaround (especially if it has to be done over and over), but for now...
Using the original example: Cut the green, select the black and say paste behind. Two extra clicks rather than potentially dozens.

Hey guys, thanks for the answers.

Yes, alt-clicking allows me to select the thing behind the thing.  This is sort of weird to me, and I say that as a guy who's been working with vectors since like 1986.  If an item is like a donut, hollow in the middle, then I'm very much accustomed to it not having any presence where it's not visible.  In this respect AD seems to treat it like a raster with a 0% alpha component: it's there but you can't see it.  Every other app I've used treats the parts where there's no object as not being part of the object.

But with the alt-thing I think I can handle it.  Thumbs up!

As for #5, it's related to the alt-clicking thing.  Basically, if I click where there's no object, I do not expect to grab that object.  If I've previously selected it and click off the object (but still within the bounding box) I do not expect to grab that object.  Blah blah 30 years of mucking with vectors, it's weird behaviour.   (OMG I'm so old).

The blur thing: I haven't actually FOUND it yet, was the issue.  I figured it must exist because SVG images imported into AD handled the blur just fine.  =)

    Good morning!

Just a few quick notes as I try this program for the first time.  There's an actual question down in #6, please help!

    1. There's an error in the installation T&C:  SERIF AND ITS LICENORS
      - I also like how the T&C says it's the final word, even if a Serif rep says otherwise in writing.  Don't trust the sales guy.   ;)

    2. After installation, opening a file defaults to the Windows/System32/ folder, which no normal user will ever visit, let alone store files in.  Should probably default to the documents folder (or nearly anywhere else).

    3. Forum registration uses Amazon to send emails.  Many email servers around the world, mine included, run a 'greywall' which reports a temporary failure to incoming mail.  The sending server waits a certain amount of time (set by the sending server) and tries again.  The receiver sees that it's been sent before, and allows it the second time.  This has a wondrous and drastic impact against spam.  Amazon, however, uses a rotating server system, so that it's not sent by the same server twice.  I had to manually intervene, because after four attempts it was still being refused, because four different servers sent the mail.  Not Serif's fault, but it may cause some problems, and now you know it's happening.

    4. Wow, this is fast, and slick.  Zooming in on a blur effect doesn't take forever to draw or manipulate things, like Inkscape does.

    5. When an item is selected, clicking and dragging anywhere within its bounding box will move that item.  Sort of weird but OK.

    6. Weird, I can't select items if another is in front of it, even if that top object is empty.  Like, an unfilled circle will block the selection of all items under it.  That's...  Really sort of unusual.  I can't think of any other app that does that.

For example, I cannot click on any item inside this wobbly triangle.  If I want to select that grey bit of shading, I have to move or lower every item in front of it first.  What's massively weird and the bit that convinces me that this behaviour is wrong, is that if I CUT that triangle I can click through it again.  Basically the inner reversed path that makes it transparent doesn't make the middle EMPTY.

This is pretty crazy, hopefully I'm just missing a keystroke or something to select lower items.

So far everything else has been pretty smooth.  I can't find control for a blur option, but I haven't looked too hard yet.  Everything else, grouping and changing layers and creating/editing/joining items, colour changes, etc - all proving to be fairly intuitive.  Thumbs up!
