vonBusing got a reaction from anon1 in Affinity Photo Customer Beta (1.3.5.1)
    Hi Garytagreg,

This strange message has been explained in the Affinity Designer Beta forum and is due to how Affinity apps keep track of opened files. For saving efficiency, only changed part of files are updated on save. If the file has been changed by other programs this will fail with the actual message. This situation happens very easily if you are in Finder renaming/moving files and folders in the path of the opened files in an Affinity app.

I think this behavior is quite unlucky because work can easily be lost when files are just closed down like this. It is common behavior in OSX that you should be able to do file handling in Finder without apps freaking out. At least, if the app has lost the control over the file, it should ask to "Save as..." rather than just closing the offending file.

I also can't wait for Publisher. There are lots of reasonably powerful PhotoShop alternatives out there, and if you can do without CMYK support, there are as many Illustrator competitors as (they mostly differ in terms of what their primary focus is, but between Sketch, Acorn, Pixelmator, iDraw, InkScape, Gimp,  Manga Studio, Sketchbook, ArtRage, Corel Painter etc. you are covered)

InDesign competitors are Quark Xpress and… um, er..  iStudio, and ummm (does Apple's Pages count?).

Bottom line, professional grade page layout applications are few.

I have no doubt the required layout tools, master pages, colour tools and awesome PDF support will be there, I'm just wondering if there is going to be the same skitzo thinking as InDesign has and provide layout for print AND digital apps. I don't know anyone who does both (the disciplines are so different they might as well combine page layout with AutoCad for architects)

BTW, are there any [leaked] screenshots to whet our appetites? I saw a video demonstrating text wrapping and it filled my heart with joy...

    Hi rchrdnsh,

Here's an example of my work around.

The original file is assembled in Affinity Designer (using the cat shape in the shape tools) & I created a document palette named Cat for the Pantone colours I wish to use.

The exported vector eps file is then edited in an external editor of choice that supports spot colours, printers marks etc. (in my case the open source Scribus because it's 'free').

I've attached my original AD file, a spot colour PDF that's exported from Scribus as well as relevant screen shots.

    Paul.

    @rchrdnsh,
They are features in the Roadmap & will be in future updates at some time.
In the mean time, I am using the open source desktop publishing app called Scribus for these features.
I export the Affinity file as .eps for print & then import it into a new Scribus page.
I am also working on a way to convert the CMYK colours in the imported file to Pantone spot colours.

    Paul.

I hope i'm not asking for something that already exist, but It will be great if in the export persona there will be a preview of the result, information about the size of the exported file and the chance to resize the exported image.

I usually export for web and the size of an image is really important to know, instead to export the file several times until you get something closer to what you need. Even this forum require that your avatar image have max 50k.

Affinity could go even further and ask you the max file size in order to give you the best result with that restriction; it can also present a preview of different formats or resolutions, so the export decision becomes visual and with information.

That you very much for this great software!

    Hi all,
It's now possible to customise nudge distances and units in Designer Beta 1.3.5.1
Check Preferences, Tools section: Nudge Distance and Modifier Nudge Distance.
You can download the Beta from here (Mac App Store version required to run the Beta).

    Hi cekuhnen,
I'm sure you are aware of the fact that artboards are coming to Affinity Designer. I'm not sure when but this feature is definitely coming.
Also, AD is not a finished product. It's in constant development, so please start nagging the developers for the features you need and if you get the community behind you they might implement it.  :)

Alex, If you change the default font as you describe, it will apply to new text created in that document. If you then use Edit > Defaults > Save, it will become the default font for new documents, too. Most object defaults can be set in this way - line styles, fills, text height etc.

Purpose: Features / Improvements / Fixes
    Status: Beta
    Requirements: Purchased Affinity Designer
    Mac App Store: Not Submitted
    Download: Here

To use this beta, simply download the file from the link given above and double-click on the file to open the installer. Follow the instructions to install the beta version. The beta sits alongside the Mac App Store version and will not interfere with it.

Please Note: This beta includes many changes which have never been beta-tested before. Being realistic, it is quite likely that you may encounter an occasional bug. We will do our utmost to fix anything that emerges as quickly as possible, but we just wanted you to understand that for production work we would recommend using the Mac App Store version until this beta has been validated for a few weeks. There are no translations included with this beta version, sorry - they will return next time...

There are far too many under-the-hood changes this time to list them all, but the highlights for this beta are:

    - User-definable keyboard shortcuts (first phase - more to come...)
    - New PDF export engine with ability to output PDF/X-1a, PDF/X-3 and PDF/X-4
    - Added Character and Paragraph panels - rather than these options being stuck in large modeless dialogs
    - Boolean geometry operations fixed
    - Many import and export improvements to PSD, PDF, EPS, SVG, etc.
    - Attempt to import .AI legacy files
    - New, searchable preferences panel with support for user-definable nudge distances

...and of course, the two changes I'm sure everyone will be most happy of all with: The beta now has its own icon and also has a sensible numbering scheme! :)

Some months ago, it seemed like there were plans to incorporate relative origins for rulers.

I continue to think this would a much used feature and can only speculate why it has not yet been incorporated.

Is this a low priority or am I missing something?

    Goompa,

I think that something very important that you should know and understand is the difference between raster and vector images. Designer is mainly a vector application with some raster (or pixel) tools (but the raster tools are not a extensive as they are in Photo). Photo is a raster application with some very basic vector tools. Here is a link to the Wikipedia pages about them, they explain quite well the differences between raster and vector graphics.

I hope that this helps you.

    - Fix for users running OS X 10.11 El Capitan Beta.
    - Improvements to vector export - particularly when converting colour formats.
    - Only show items in Export Persona which will be visible in the export.
    - Print what is shown in the view (i.e. do not honour exportability settings when printing, unless in Export Persona at the time)
    - Added ability to zoom to 100% by double-clicking the Zoom Tool's icon or 'Zoom to Fit' by double-clicking the View Tool
    - Zoom Tool now zooms in/out during mouse drag about the drag start location. Zooming to a rectangle is still available by holding Alt/Option
    - Improved PNG import
    - Path Text baseline improvements

I saw Affinity Photo on sale in the App Store this morning and it was a very easy and quick decision to buy. A great product and goodbye to photoshop, based on my current and likely needs. Excellent launch video.

Now just waiting for the Affinity Publisher beta hopefully not to long away(?) which personally is the part of this great suite that I have been most waiting for. But certainly not in any way disappointed by the current Photo and Designer applications

Thanks for all the feedback. I created the thread so you could all help drive the iteration of the new icons. We have now completed what we will have for our next App Store release so I'm going to close this thread.

We plan on iterating our icons in the coming years so will probably need your help again. Keep hold of all those opinions for the next round.

    Thanks again,
    TonyB.
