We don't have a specific date for release just yet, but we hope Affinity Photo will be available soon :)

I've always been interested in Affinity ever since designers have popularised it as a strong alternative to Adobe products, but I'm a Windows user primarily. I got excited when I knew of Affinity's Windows beta programs, but I'm not much of a beta tester, so I waited.
 
When I heard Affinity released its final Windows version of Affinity Designer, I obviously went straight ahead and purchased it. I have to say I am blown away by the amount of features I am getting for the price tag!

My initial assumptions was that Affinity Designer was geared more towards UI/UX Layout design specifically, and definitely far too early in its days to be considered an Illustrator alternative.
 
To my surprise, it seems to have a strong workspace for digital illustrators and artists as well, much to my delight, since I am a digital illustrator myself.
 
Either way, I just wanted to commend Serif on their good work, which from my personal perspective, is an indirect form of fighting against the monopoly Adobe has over the design industry.
 
Two things I love about Affinity Designer right off the bat:

1) The speed
2) The price tag to features ratio (the additional 3 pack plugins were awesome as well!)

Hello, I'm a newbie from France so, sorry for my High shool english, not very good. For many reasons, I stopped Photoshop. Now, I use Affinity Photo. No regret. 
So, I show you some illustrations made with Affinity. I think that Photoshop is not better in fact.

PS : For the man with glasses, he's a french bad philsopher, always at TV ... we have a lot like this...
 
 

I was experimenting with gradient maps and recoloring. A sort of bland photo of a leafless tree picked up some character, I think.

I'm no Photographer but I think just adjusting the White Balance within the Develop Persona will make a huge improvement. You could also use the Haze Removal Filter and Unsharp Mask filters on the image. The "Pro" image looks like it was taken on a sunny day. Your image also seems over exposed too.

Glad to hear you're getting along well with the app! I have provided some information below taken from the inbuilt help in Affinity Designer which may help answer your question.

Masks
 
A layer mask is used to reveal a portion of a layer while the rest of the layer remains hidden. This means that you can use a mask layer to 'delete' areas of a layer that you don't want.

Layers
 
You can think of layers as being like sheets of paper that are stacked one on top of the other. Transparent areas of the layer reveal the layer below, while opaque parts of a layer obscure the layers below. Objects that make up a specific part of your design would normally be placed on the same layer.

View - Studio - Reset Studio.  Phew..

Before trying the 'Select All - Clear' method (which will wipe out a lot of user preferences) I suggest opening the View > "Customize Tools..." menu item & seeing if you can just drag the Text tool onto the Tools palette. (There are three of them, one each for the Art & Frame tools individually & a combined 'fly-out' tool for both.)

Clear User Defaults This will clear any custom settings made within the Preferences panel. It will also reset any changes made to the Toolbar, Tools and Context Toolbar back to their default settings. This option is also available in Preferences > Misc > Reset User Defaults.   Don’t Restore Windows and Documents This is normally used to stop the app from trying to restore a previous document that closed unexpectedly.   Reset Studio This resets all panels in the Studio back to their default positions. This is the same as View > Studio > Reset   Reset Object Styles This will delete any custom styles added to the Styles Panel. This option is also available in Preferences > Misc > Reset Object Styles   These settings are stored in objectstyles.propcol and can also be exported from Styles Panel.   Reset File Exports This will delete any custom File Export presets made in File > Export and the Export Persona.   These settings are stored in: file_export_options.dat (  If you have no custom presets this file will not exist )   Reset Snapping Options Presets This will delete any custom presets made within Snapping.   These settings are stored in: snapping_options.dat (  If you have no custom presets this file will not exist )   Reset Fills This will delete any Application Palettes you've added to the Swatches Panel. It will also delete any colours added to the default palettes such as Grey, Colours & Gradients. This option is also available in Preferences > Misc > Reset Fills.   These settings are stored in fills.propcol and can be exported from the Swatches Panel   Reset Brushes This will delete any brushes imported into the app and will reset all brushes within the app back to their default settings. This option is also available in Preferences > Misc > Reset Brushes.   These settings are stored in raster_brushes.propcol and can be exported from the Brushes Panel   Reset Font Replacements This will delete font replacements specified when opening files that contain fonts that are not installed. Replacement fonts are automatically selected the next time you open a file missing the same font.   These settings are stored in: font_map.dat (  If you have no font replacements this file will not exist )
 
Please note: This is different from Preferences > Misc > Reset Fonts. This option forces Affinity to Reload/Repopulate fonts listed in the app. This can be useful when using 3rd Party apps to load fonts.
  Reset Adjustments This will delete any custom presets found in the Adjustment Panel. These are created from Adjustments layers.    These settings are stored in: adjustments.propcol   Reset Macro Library This will delete custom Macros.   These settings are stored in: macros.propcol   Reset Develop Presets This will delete any custom presets saved in the Basic, Lens, Details, Tones and Overlays Panels in the Develop Persona.   These settings are stored in: develop.propcol   Reset Crop Tool Presets This will delete any custom presets saved within the Crop Tool.   These settings are stored in: croppresets.propcol   Reset Keyboard Shortcuts This will delete any custom keyboard shortcuts. You will need to export these by going to Preferences > Keyboard Shortcuts > Save before resetting.

Here's two ways: you can either duplicate the planet then edit the duplicate leaving just the part needed to cover the ring, or mask the part of the ring you don't want to see.

The Media Browser will need to scan your external to populate the thumbnails in the browser and with these many photos it will take a long time to complete. With these many photos it may be quicker you the File>Open with the thumbnail layout enabled to select the required photo.

Thought I would share my attempt.... so much to explore.... 
 
It was trying to be an Emu, but ended quite Lama'ish..  lol. 
 

 

Thought you might like to see what I have been working on for the last month or so.  It's a 1925 Renault 40CV Tourer.  I actually don't care for the nose view of this car so I kept this view from the side, which I think has an elegant style.  
 
Only 1162 vector layers on this one. ;)  I've attached a couple areas that have been zoomed in on.
 

 

 

 
I'm trying to decide if I'm going to do a 1934 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Kellner Cabriolet next or a 1924 Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A.  I love the style of both of these.

Have you taken a look at this tutorial at all? You can insert additional images using File > Place and the tutorial may assist you perfecting the image.
