The difference between layers and masks

Recommended Posts

Good Afternoon,  I am doing quite well as a newbie - have been doing tutorials, watching videos and experimenting.  However, I am struggling with the difference between layers and masks.  I am hoping that someone will be able to throw some light on this for me please.  Kind regards.

Hi

Glad to hear you're getting along well with the app! I have provided some information below taken from the inbuilt help in Affinity Designer which may help answer your question.

Masks

A layer mask is used to reveal a portion of a layer while the rest of the layer remains hidden. This means that you can use a mask layer to 'delete' areas of a layer that you don't want.

Layers

You can think of layers as being like sheets of paper that are stacked one on top of the other. Transparent areas of the layer reveal the layer below, while opaque parts of a layer obscure the layers below. Objects that make up a specific part of your design would normally be placed on the same layer.

HI!

Your asking the ultimate question!  Layers and layer masks are essential to editing photos, and so complex to get to grips at.
