tokai got a reaction from BatteriesInc in Official Affinity Publisher V1 (Desktop) Tutorials
Would be nice to have all the tutorials in one downloadable (zip) package (not necessarily has to be in 4K, of course. 720 would be fine, IMHO.  ) , so one can fetch them in one go and comfortable watch locally with VLC. My slow network connection struggles with the online streams. Always buffers; one can't quickly pause and seek back in case one missed something, rebuffering, etc. In the end I don't watch the tutorials at all for this reason.

tokai got a reaction from shushustorm in Option to disable the Splash Screen on Program Launch
    Hi,

please add an option to allow me to disable the splash screen that appears during launch of the application for a second and an unnecessary felt delay (the one that looks identical to the Aboutbox; not talking about the welcome screen that can be launched via Help menu.) I don't mind typing a 'default' command in Terminal to do so (doesn't have to be a UI option). For some reason I recall such option existed in the past, but I'm unable to find it in the Preferences now.

The pictures are nice and everything (though I'm not such a big fan of the new simple square icons/logos w/o defining outline) and I get the desire to do some "branding", but for me as user it also gets quickly boring and then the 3rd or 4th time it gets annoying. Just showing up with the UI, so I can quickly get started with my work, would be best, IMHO.

(this goes for all 3 apps, not just Designer, of course)

    Thanks.

tokai got a reaction from curtissimo in Designer: How to do a "Perspective Transform"?
    Hi,

just bored and playing around a bit with Designer to get to know the application better (a good way to kill some time :) ).

So… I made this little keyboard (2D) and now I want to transform it into a more 3D-ish shape (like the trapezoid below.) How the heck can I do this?

I'm quite sure I saw some perspective transform tool sometime, but I can't find it anymore... but maybe I'm confusing it with another application? When the keyboard group is activated and I go with the mouse to the top middle circular drag thingy I get the option to transform it into a parallelogram, but not into a trapezoid.

    Help please!  :)

Not everyone can put their client works though some 3rd-party cloud conversion service (NDAs, Data Protection Laws, etc. might disagree whit those )

    Hi Tokai,

This is something we have reported with development, however I have passed your comments over to and bumped the issue with them.

tokai got a reaction from sfriedberg in SVG: Colors don't render if they're in HSL format
I just stumbled upon this too. I generated some heavy SVG stuff in Python… and only half of it showed up in Affinity Designer. :( Turns out gradients with hsl() stop colors were simply ignored (the respective objects were invisible upon loading).
First I thought it's a mistake on my end… perhaps that hsl() stuff is not even supposed to be added to SVG, but OS X's quickview shows it fine. Also some research in the specs reveals it's there since many years: https://www.w3.org/TR/2013/WD-SVG2-20130409/color.html

Now I have to do extra conversion to RGB in Python (I think there's some loss of precision involved there… not sure… luckily Python has a badly documented function for that in its "colorsys" module. ;) )

So add me to the list of people who want this fixed/ feature added to AD! Such simple colour conversion upon loading is probably just a short finger exercise for the experienced developers @ the serif headquarters… considering all the real complexity elsewhere in the apps. :D

Was just testing some new things in Affinity Designer 1.7.1 and had this random blob (curve) on the screen, and it looked like an animal, so —a tiny bit later— this came out. Tested the new stroke arrow options too (the feet).

The vectorised voronoi pattern was generated with CINEMA 4D, rendered out, passed through "potrace", and then imported as curve into Affinity Designer. Not sure that's the best way, but works for me.

“Once upon a time, a long time ago, in a land far away . . .” is the classic way to start.   From there you just decide what your little funny ones have, don’t have, miss and —always important — are in dire peril from  (and from which they get rescued, probably by another funny one, who becomes a fast friend).  Not too many words and loads of your charming pictures.  I predict you will be a major success.  The illustrations are the HARD PART.

If I want to generate some shapes then I use code (e.g. Python or Processing) and let it generate some SVG to import into Affinity. Not that hard. Especially for such kind of abstract shapes stuff. Sticking to one tool for every task is just limiting. Use the right tool for the right job and have many tools at hand.

    Anyway…
I didn't know this handle stuff… found out how to use it in the Desktop version too. Learned something new! That's what counts. And here's the end result of my messing around with that stuff for 10 minutes in post afterwards (by the way: used 2 additional tools here, and only 1 is by Serif  )

tokai reacted to MEB in Bug: "Force pixel alignment" does not always work
    Hi matisso,
Thanks for the file and screenshots. Yes, snapping takes priority which makes it problematic with text objects, scaled images (where keeping the ratio forces one of the dimensions to be off grid), odd width, heights of other objects etc. I will talk with the dev team, raise those issues/propose a few changes to see if we can improve things here.
Thanks all for your reports and feedback.

I wouldn't feel bad about not knowing shortcuts; there should always be obvious ways to do things in the interface - a shortcut is just that, a memory-based quick-access for regular and experienced users. It's not just novices who need obvious UI cues, but professionals for whom Affinity usage might only be a small part of their day, week or even month. That said, Designer is pretty good in most respects, but I as an extension of your request I'd like to see pretty much any function available for the toolbar - different people have vastly different priorities when it comes to feature access (in conjunction with being able to save custom UI "workspaces" and transfer them across installations)

Indeed, closing the curve (or rather deleting all that mess) fixed the boolean operation (not sure what strange zig-zag curve Designer generated there anyway… the legs where expanded strokes originally.  ) The application definitely should inform the user about things like that. I was completely in the dark here about the actual issue.

This was just some funny nonsense project I made, but if this would have been an important work project where I depended on a single curve I probably would have cursed like mad at the screen.
