    Hi Marc,

    1. Make a new Pixel Layer over the main image layer.
    2. Use Edit -> Fill (or Matt) and set it to 50% grey
    3. Set this new grey layer to Blend Mode "Overlay"
    4. Use the brush and paint with white/black, swap with X.

    Cheers :)

Edit: woops, Leigh posted while i was typing.

If you Rasterise the shape without the outer shadow effect you can use the Mesh Warp Tool to further bend/tweak your paper.
And using the paper as selection and filling a layer below it with black and do a little more work with the Mesh Warp Tool gives you even a little more realistic result.

    Cheers :)

    Something like this?

    1. Draw a rectangle shape.
    2. Add a mask and paint with rough brushes until you're satisfied with the edges.
    3. Place a wrinkled paper image over and clip it to the rectangle shape and adjust the opacity to your liking. (see the layer setup below)

I used a little outer shadow on the rectangle shape for effect.
Trying to keep all such shapes as vector objects as long as possible gives you the option to scale it how ever you like without loosing any quality.

Here's a link to the wrinkled paper i used in this example

    MattP,
Thank you ever so much for the suggestion and for taking the time to test it and answer.
I had wondered if it might have something to do with the 'extra' stroke layers which I had added. Being very much a beginner, I had to attempt solve an issue where the blur and opacity levels of my highlights and shadows was causing a problem with the stroke on the underlying layer. A 'new' stroke layer above quickly solved that little problem for me but I didn't see until after export that it was causing its own problems. (I am also pretty sure that the blurring and opacity changes which I made are likely not the best way to do those highlights and shadows; but I am learning as I go.)
Thanks again for the suggestion; I will have to try that out immediately!   :D

justwilliam got a reaction from ronnyb in Applying round corners to a box?
Quite true, but at the cost of extra steps.  I have never tracked my usage as such, but I would be willing to guess that I, personally, use the rounded-rectangle more that the rectangle tool for my needs. I rather like merely pressing m to get to the round-rectangle tool and then click-dragging out my rounded rectangles as opposed to click-dragging a rectangle and then pressing c to get the corner tool and then dragging the corners. Plus I have the added benefit of a small red dot in the event that I want to change that rounded corner and ALL corners at once - something which I do not get with the rectangle/corner tool method.

Whether that should be termed a matter of taste or a matter convenience I will leave for someone else to decide - but I can unequivocally state that I prefer the faster, easier, simpler method in this particular instance.

Perhaps I could suggest that there be only one tool for rectangles - rounded ones - and that there be created a set of steps to go through each time for those who wish to have it converted into a 'regular' rectangle.  Certainly everyone here would be all for that!

    Hi justwilliam,

I took a quick look... First thing is to make sure that you don't have 2 (or more) objects with the same shape and outline overlaying each other, because the antialiased edges will multiply up and darker bits will look more jagged as a result. In this particular case, if you look at the 'Hood' group you've got a 'Hood Stroke' object at the top and a 'Hood' object at the bottom - both are the same shape and have the same stroke - so your stroke multiplies up and looks artificially jagged. Just select the 'Hood' object at the bottom and set its stroke to None. Now select your 'Hood Stroke' object and click the little gear icon at the top right of the Layers panel - it brings up an advanced blending dialog. Try setting the blend gamma to about 1.45 or something like that - it will make the blending softer.

I was able to get the hood to look pretty good after a small amount of tinkering :)

    Hope that helps,
    Matt

There's no way of accessing auto-saved files. They aren't even normal documents; they only contain incremental changes, for speed. They are only supposed to help recover from power failures and other catastrophic events. (We're going to stop calling them "auto-save" to be clearer about that.)

EDIT: Yes, Loonaclik, you have indeed got the upload to work now. (sorry about all the joking before  )

A really clean image with good tonal range; are you going to share the adjustments done in the develop persona in order to achieve this for those who may not have worked with monochrome images much?

Uhmm; just another opinion here but, I like having both the 'rectangle' and the 'rounded rectangle' in my tool bar - for a couple of reasons:

When I want a rectangle with rounded corners, I like simply to click-drag and be done - no extra fiddling required.

My toolbar only extends to less than halfway down the left side, so there is plenty of room to have both; it is not as if there is a lack of real estate there requiring the removal of a tool to make more room. Removing the specific 'rounded rectangle' tool makes about as much sense to me as would removing the 'smart' mode available for when using the pen tool.

One of the things I like best about Affinity D & P is the ease and simplicity with which I can do things quickly; maybe I am missing something here but what is being discussed (from the beginning of this post, anyway) would seem to be a large step backwards.

If you go to Preferences... in iPhoto, on the Advanced tab, there is an option to edit in another application.  I haven't tried it (I don't use iPhoto) but it might be worth playing with.

We show the units in the control box because you can type a value and use any unit you like. For example, if my document uses mm as the units, I can put a value of 12pt in, and it will convert it to mm. I could also type in 20px, and it would convert from pixels to mm using the document's DPI.  If I type just a number, it will assume it is in the document units, unless the control is showing a percentage or an angle.

The value will always be shown using the documents units (but you can change this at any type in the document setup).

You can also type formulae into the box.  For example, "2cm * 5.2" or "3in + 5mm", or "/= 2" to create a value of half the current value.  The formula side will be improved over time.  We have a large number of undocumented constant values.  When we have time, we will add a way to display what constant values are available, and maybe a fast function tool.

justwilliam reacted to DashingDave in How do the items in the Performance pane (Preferences) affect optimization?
I'm curious as to how each of the items affects the applications' performance. There's no explanation in the help files.
RAM Usage Limit: I notice this can be dragged up to ~64 GB (which is more than 5 times how much RAM my Mac has...); does lessening the amount keep the application running smoothly... or do I need to open it up to the maximum amt of RAM I have so that it doesn't get "bottled up"? Disk Usage Warning Limit: This one's a bit confusing--does the application warn you if there's less than the set amount when you try to save a document? Again, the max is set at 64GB, even though my hard drive has 40 GB of free space at the moment. Undo Limit: I presume that the lower I set this, the less RAM the application will need Dither gradients: faster performance checked, or unchecked? Use precise clipping: same question Use hardware OpenGL: same User only integrated GPU: same

I wonder if there’s a way to quickly remove layer styles in AP. I only managed to do this by either unchecking all of them manually or creating a new layer style without any attributes selected in the first place and click on that one every time I want the shapes to be plain original. A »Revert defaults« button like the one in AD would be nice.

Maybe I can chime in here quickly … the Revert Defaults button is available in Affinity Photo as well … simply choose View > Customise Toolbar … and drag the buttons to the toolbar … :)

justwilliam reacted to evtonic3 in I love the Bevel/Emboss effect BUT...
I have really enjoyed making some cool layer styles that I have since posted and got great response (thank you) but I must be greedy and push the developers to give us a bit more "polish" to the bevel and emboss section of the effects panel. I think there's definitely room for growth and refinement. If we could get anti-aliasing in the mix would be great. Also a shine contour would definitely be a HUGE improvement! That and PS's Satin effect makes things really look pro. So please consider!
