Now you're talking. That looks like a really nice solution to my need for width adjustments. One less need for Illustrator...

Interesting idea but the user should be able to assign the colors of their choice

Illustrator offers us the choice of black on gray or white on black. I have mine set just bright enough to have black on gray which is easier on my eyes (and easier to read as well).

    Please offer us the choice.

Easiest way to start learning is by reading manuals or using help files. Do things step by step, practice what you read and if you have questions post them. Having never used a digital camera, computer or the software involved, it is going to seem very intimidating. Just be patient and keep working at it and remember that we have all been where you are at one time.

Here's my attempt. I adjusted it for overall color and then tweaked individual areas.

When you are learning a new piece of software, there is a lot of experimentation required. Read the help file, watch the videos and try working with the tool which was the subject of the video. If you get stumped, just post a question and one of us will probably be able to give you an answer.

Don't get intimidated and remember that the rest of us started right where you are now.

JimGoshorn reacted to JDW in Add "Angle" to Gradient Controls
    Try this:

    1. New document.
    2. Click once on the Rectangle Tool (or type "M")
    3. Click the square to the right of "Fill:" in the upper left corner of the window.
    4. Click on the "Gradient" tab.
    5. Note there is no field to set the ANGLE.  Please add that.

Why?  Because Illustrator has one and for good reason.

Yes, you can set the angle by going outside the Gradient panel, choosing the gradient tool and then manually doing it.  But if one is already working inside the Gradient tab (especially for matters of precision), it is only logical that an ANGLE setting should be in there too.

    Thanks!

It would be great to have the option to save a Mesh Warp setup to a library of folder that could be loaded back in at a later date for provision replication of deformations.

JimGoshorn reacted to Anstellos in Photoshop Apply Image Functionality Needed
I love the frequency separation into affinity photo. One of my favorite tool ! it's so much easier to do. Good job.

But apply image is far from just freq separation, like Jim said, it can do a lot of work for color correction, color enhancement even re-building light ! When you work in LAB you use it all the time. Plus you may do freq separation "manually" to get a different result. Always nice to have a few options :)

I will not use channels or curves to do that, it's way slower and less accurate. On a workflow point of view it's a no go.
I like affinity photo. I bought it day one. I find myself having to go back to photoshop every time I need "APPLY IMAGE". It's a shame because I think Affinity is more modern as a workflow. I just need this feature on every color work.

I work with printing companies and color experts everyday. If this feature is not in, I don't see myself telling people to get it. I wish that Serif will take this feature seriously. It may be an advanced feature that not everyone use, but professionals do.

Affinity Photo wants to get the professional market right ?

JimGoshorn reacted to Anstellos in apply image missing
    Hi,
I talked about it during beta.

I would like affinity photo to have a image / "apply image" similar to photoshop. Being able to apply a channel to a layer while changing it's blending mode.

    I use this to :
    color correct
getting much better color (natural look), its different than vibrance. much better.
    better black and white

My whole portfolio have extensive use of this feature :
No other feature can create such colors : http://anstellos.deviantart.com/gallery/

ps: I try hard to get the similar result in affinity. It yet cannot do it. I find myself to go back to photoshop for this feature only. That's a shame, your soft almost tick all the boxes but this is a big one.

The image is recorded in the camera as something resembling a black and white image (think single channel). The demosiacing process converts the image by splitting up the original data into 3 separate color channels (R,G,B) which when combined create the color image. So in basic terms, you multiple the amount of data in the RAW by 3 (it's not exactly 3 but that explains the concept) since it's being split up.

I would really appreciate a video for this which would compare doing blend if with Photoshop and doing it with the Affinity apps so we could better understand how to use the feature. After doing it Adobe's way for years, your way can be a bit of a head scratcher

    Hi Allan,

When using ProPhoto, it is recommended to use it in 16 bit to avoid possible posterization. 8 bit only gives you 256 shades whereas 16 bit gives you 65536 so it is much more forgiving if you need to make more extensive adjustments. Here's an article in Wikipedia:

JimGoshorn got a reaction from Gear maker in Photo - raw history
Just a clarification. When other apps like Adobe Camera Raw, Lightroom etc. process images, the process data is written to an XMP sidecar file or if the RAW image has been converted to DNG (digital negative) format the data is written to the file itself because the format stores image and data. You never want to write processing data to the RAW file itself because the image is to be kept pristine (hence the term RAW). When you open the file again, all the settings are displayed in the software. Even if you change just one setting, the entire process has to be done from scratch since operations are done in a particular order.

At this point, Photo doesn't have this feature but it is still in it's infancy. There is an item in the roadmap for Develop Improvements and maybe this is one of them (I have no inside info and don't speak for the developers).

OK, try this and see if it helps. Open an image in the developer persona and then click the assistant options button the the top of the window (the assistant options change according to the persona you are using). Set Tone Curve setting to take no action. Sometimes this auto stuff can throw things off.

Frequently, the developers have to adapt the plug-ins to the software (in this case Photo). So if you want to see Photo supported, request it with the plug-in company.

What I was thinking of is as you allow some specs to be entered in the context bar like corners on a round rectangle, you could also provide fields for size and placement etc so everything is done in one place. Tab across the fields and make the settings. Another thing it helps to do to speed creation is to use those settings to create additional objects where the user double clicks.

Not stitching Tony. Focus stacking is where you have multiple images taken with different parts of the subject in focus for extended depth of field. Then you would load them into AP where they would be stacked one on top of another and aligned to each other and the out of focus areas of each image would be masked. The result is a composite where everything is in focus.
