Explanation of RAW loading issues.

Hello,

We currently have a problem which means many RAW files will appear unable to load.

We made sure all the cameras in our supported camera list work, but stupidly forgot to tell the app to accept all the file extensions - so while the app *could* open .ARW, .ORF and everything else, it currently won't let you - because we forgot..

This will be rectified in the next beta - which should be with you guys on Monday.

Apologies for the inconvenience..

Andy.

Honestly, Andy, I can't pretend to speak for the rest of the people who are now Affinity users...but, for one, find the above statement refreshing in that you and Serif have enough integrity to make the aforementioned statement and apologize. I've been around long enough to remember the '90's and how a certain Adobe rival in layout and publishing used to respond to their user base with boldly unapologetic chants of "just buy the next version" when questioned for workarounds and/or troubleshooting techniques. The big red "A" got into it with Apple when they released CS5/5.5 and it crashed on Lion and Mountain Lion. They ultimately offered fixes but nobody actually apologized.

Redmond gets away with it all of the time.

I'd put up my input about the raw files from my cameras to help you guys build a better product, not to browbeat you. It's. A. BETA. Last time I looked, that is the purpose of beta testing. To paraphrase Henry Cabot Henhouse III, we knew the job was dangerous when we took it. We're just grateful that you guys came out with Designer and Photo (excuse me, a little drool spilled out of the corner of my mouth in anticipation of Publisher) when we needed you to...right after the big red "A" abandoned us and decided to put a gun to our heads in the name of corporate greed.

Wow. You apologized.

The mere fact of your willingness to apologize makes me realize one thing...as long as you guys are making the software, I'll be buying/supporting/using it and urging as many others to take a look at your offerings as much as possible. There would be only one thing we would ask in return.

Never sell to anyone who will not maintain the integrity you have shown us today. And ESPECIALLY NOT to them. And if you have to ask who "they" are, I've mentioned them at least three times in this posting.

"Keep doing it to it." My cameras and I are right here waiting with $50.00.

Tim Cook should be proud. Right now, the Affinity brand is one of the only things keeping me from going completely over to the dark side.

Thank YOU wholeheartedly for your time and immense effort. Now, where'd I leave that 2006 MacBook Pro...

I may be apologising on numerous occasions over the next couple of months, Photo is an ambitious thing and lots of stuff will go wrong during the beta..

That said, thanks sincerely for your reply - it reminds me of the "old days" - when betas were betas and good people helped to get broken stuff fixed. I still think a lot of people think that way..

Just discovered Affinity today, and like most of you guys, I am happy to try it out and buy it when it is released.

I can see a lot of potential, and I will comment as I go along.

I have been using Photoshop, PhotoPaint (when I worked with Windows), and now using Aperture, NIK software (before it disappeared under Google), DxO Optics and just recently discovered Capture One.

I still use Photoshop, but I am sick of paying hundreds of dollars for every new version they produce.

Photoshop might be a standard today, but I clearly remember when I used Windows, and Corel's Photopaint was their competitor - it outperformed Photoshop in logic, intuitiveness, and simplicity of usage.

Unfortunately still stuck with PhotoShop as I have bought many versions of it, but I am happy to let it go and switch ships.

I would really love to work with just one program, and I have a good feeling that Affinity might be it.

Especially if they listen to the Beta users, as they seem they do.

Credit for the efforts, I am sure programming a photo editing application is not an easy task, but just by having such a faster loading tells me these guys know what they are doing.

My first comment is on the RAW format opening of my Sony Alpha 7. It opens it, but the image is too dark.

Is this a known bug ?

Mac's making a preview of a ARW file OK by pressing the space bar, but when opened in Affinity it appears as if it was stripped out of colour and darkened 2 F-stops.

Keep up the good work guys.

I was able to load RAW (camera used: Panasonic Gh4)

but the preview on affinity photobeta gives me a magenta look. while on Lightroom was how I shot it.

I'm trying to matched everything like the outcome on lightroom, but with no success. =)

I think Panasonic Gh4 RAW is not supported yet. Or the software makes some kind of changes that I sincerely don't understand.

PROs:

the software gives me the right aspect ratio I shot (in this case I used 16:9 on Gh4). Lightroom cuts some part of it. And even the RAW preview on mac, is cut like on lightroom! Confused! lol Even the On Camera Preview cuts it off.. LOL...

I will try the Canon Raw...

I know that the beta update we intend to release on Monday will fix many RAW issues - including the GH4 issue described above :)

Thanks for all your encouragement everyone - it means a lot :)

I think It's a must have powerful software to have as a Photographer and Videomaker. I like it. Why don't you add some function like on lightroom, example the library and develop tab. So I can use (lightroom-photoshop) in just one software. First I import my pictures, then correct it like on lightroom, and then edit like on photoshop. But All-in-one... Maybe I didn't explored all the function yet, but It would be, in my opinion, awesome! =) Thanks for your work, I will absolutely buy it.

The Canon RAW are read in the proper way, like on lightroom! =) Thanks guys for what you doing. =) I even checked the RAM usage. It's half than Lr! Wow! That's great!

I'd like to print and pin your post at the office (but I won't.. ahah!).  I'm QA & Usability specialist where I work and frankly, every time something is wrong with the apps the boys are developing, I either get the blame for looking too close or get told that it's my fault because I'm trying too hard to break the app.. (lol !!!).  It's refreshing to read something like that.

You're the best :)

Grand! Totally looking forward to having the whole suite of Affinity wares on my Mac. I can't think of anything more satisfying than dumping the big subscription bums. Terrific job people at Affinity.

G

I cannot agree more.  Even working on tiffs and making comparisons bewteen several other raw process systems, Affinity Photo seems to be winning hands down.

Not being able to load my Fuji XT1 files or Xe2 files was a downer, but I have been working with converted tiff files and I am so totally satisfied.  You certainly have one me over even with the beta and non use of my raws.  I shall being slapping down my 50 bucks when you are ready.

I hace lots of other raw proecessors and the best one I use right now is Capture One on my particular Fuji files.  In making comparisons over the last few days, you folks look terrific.

+1.

I was stunned (and I do not use that word lightly) to see the apology and, if anything, that kind of honesty makes me all the more interested in buying this product when it is released.

I am hopeful that the Fuji RAF files for the Fuji xt1 and xt1 will be fixed on Monday so I can work on the format through Persona.  I have been working on RAF to Tiff conversions but that is not the same as Persona so I really cannot evaluate the Beta properly, except I like what I see so far.  If the files are represented then I can continue to test, but beyond that I will have to work with Capture 1 8.0 and Macphun programs.

I really like what you have done so far, and I understand it is a beta, so when Fuji RAF files noted above are included I'll jump back in.

Thanks for all the great work and responses.

Hi Gary,

If this is with the latest beta (ie. it doesn't ask you to get a new one when you run it up), any chance you could send me a sample RAW file to support@seriflabs.com (only used for dev, deleted immediately after testing)..

Thanks,

Andy.

Edit: I'd buy the Leica to test it, but I doubt the finance guys would buy my story ;)

Hi Andy,

Figured I'd re-post just to report that the ".raw" files from my Panasonic Lumix FZ30 and FZ50 are successfully opening in the updated beta. ".arw" files from the Sony Alpha A300 and ".mrw" files from my Minolta Maxxum 5D are working as well.

Again, thank you. Can't wait to see what else you guys have got up your sleeves.
