I have tried it myself and it works great. Something like this as a plugin for Affinity Photo would be nice.

MAC mini M4 | MacOS Sequoia 15.3.2 | 16 GB RAM | 256 GB SSD
AMD Ryzen 7 5700X | INTEL Arc A770 LE 16 GB  | 32 GB DDR4 3200MHz | Windows 11 Pro 24H2 (26100.3476)

Affinity Suite V 2.6.1  & Beta 2.6 (latest)

I don't know about the professional users of Affinity, but that sure does look interesting to me as a rank amateur.

1) MacBook M3 Pro 18/512 - Now my daily driver. 2) I liked it so much I added an M4 Air. Consider me a convert.

2xDell laptops on Win 11 frozen at 23H2. With 2 & 4 hours of battery life, respectively, they're already dead to me.

Wow!!! This is super impressive.  I've restored photos for a few clients and I've colorized those images manually in Affinity Photo.  This as a plugin would be huge in affinity photo.  I've never used photoshop. In fact, I started my professional photography career using affinity phot because of the price.  The only thing I feel affinity lacks, is support for plugins.

Yea, this is the times we live in. This is an excellent resource for quick colorization. There is still an art and benefit to the process of hand painting or digitally painting old photos.

I agree.  I've restored photos manually.  I love the process of scanning old photos, removing dust and imperfections, colorizing them, and digitizing them for my clients.  Tech is changing so fast now!

Interesting and practical.

There is also the PhotosRevive app https://neededapps.com/photosrevive/ which does a nice job:

It's impressive, isn't it! It even gave good results for some of my great-grandfather's Canada photos from 120 years ago (though the Niagara River came out green 😵).

Great to hear!

Niagara River green? Did you choose among all 15 different coloring presets?

No, just the first one; I was trying it out on different photos. It handles even very poor quality ones well. If you mouse over the photo while it's uploading and processing it shows a list of things it's identified in the image; one of the things in the Niagara pic was 'algae', hence the green water, I presume.

Kasper, perhaps the app determined the photo had been taken on St. Patricks day and concluded that the Niagara River had been treated with a dye and was competing with the Chicago River that day. ;)
