I am fairly new to AP but successfully used the program to publish a pdf monthly newsletter - and was very pleased. However, I'm failing to publish this months newsletter because when exporting to pdf an error message occurs. Not good - I have a deadline to meet. Try as I might (surfed the message boards) the failure persists. I have found a workaround - go to print and then print as PDF works - but this is not satisfactory. I note that many users are having similar problems - with some varied advice given from this website. I'm looking for a solution and would welcome comment from someone who has had the problem and resolved it. I use an iMac Retina 4k / OS 10.15.7 - Many thanks

Hello @Ragged Apple, and welcome to the forums

It would help others solve your problem  if you did two things:

  1. Please specify the exact words of your error message.
  2. Please change the title of your message from 'Publisher' to something more specific and descriptive, perhaps 'Error when exporting to pdf'.

What is the error? What is the nature of the problem. What you have said is very very vague.

Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.4

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

What does it say? There are many error messages for a variety of problems.

My problem is I cannot export my Publisher document to PDF - and get an error message each time I try. I have tried selecting several of the pdf options without success.

  1. Tell us what error message you get and perhaps exactly what you did
  2. Attach the file in question if at all possible

Do you see a Green (little smudge of an icon) or a Yellow or Red (little smudge of an icon) down at the bottom left of the Application Window. If you click on it you will see a whole list of what is wrong with the publisher document.

Aside: I don't know if the little smudge is a Light or a Bell.

Regardless of the colour if you click on it and you'll be shown the Preflight panel. Here I have made a mistake to show the sort of thing that will appear here.

Thanks for this - it says 'Bleed hazard' - I haven't got a bleed on the document - but one of my images although contained in a frame gets close to the page edge (beneath the frame where it's hidden) - I don't understand why this should be a problem!

Try to reduce the pages one by one (or more pages) to see on which page the problem occurs. I would guess it is a problem with an image. Somewhere in the FAQ there is a description how to turn on logging for pdflib. Perhaps this might helpful too. Or if all fails ask a moderator for a private upload link, so that they can have a look.

Shouldn't be. That, Bleed Hazard, never prevents me from exporting to a PDF file.

Joachim_L has popped up with the adivce I was about to give.

Plus Could you try saving a copy to the desktop and then exporting from the copy a pdf to the desktop as well.

A problem with an Live Filter / FX / adjustment perhaps. So you have to narrow down to the specific page(s).

If the document is non-private just upload it to the forum. Someone may be able to then give you a definitive answer rather than just guessing as to which of the 42 possible reasons it could be for that specific error message

To save time I am currently using an automated AI to reply to some posts on this forum. If any of "my" posts are wrong or appear to be total b*ll*cks they are the ones generated by the AI. If correct they were probably mine. I apologise for any mistakes made by my AI - I'm sure it will improve with time.

Thanks Carl. If there are 42 possible reasons for the problem is there somewhere I can find the list?

Have you tried the PDFLib logging suggested above, and what did it show?

Sorry - no, I haven't time for close and extended examination of the problem - I have to meet a print deadline and for now I have a temp solution. I apologise if I appear abrupt - very grateful to all who have offered suggestions. I'm not used to using forums to examine problems in detail - more used to either working out the problem myself or finding a solution written up online. From what I have read it appears that dealing with PDF output from AP has a few issues. I haven't time to spend crawling through all the options - either it works or it doesn't. Happy to accept that some will think me an R's!! Thanks again and bye for now.

Your responses seem, to me, to be very levelheaded, no need for an apology. Glad you found a temporary solution, possibly it could lead to a permanent solution. If it does please come back and say so.
