What is the Texture Line Style in Paragraph Decorations for?

Recommended Posts

In the Decorations section of the Paragraph Panel I can set a Texture Line Style (the brush icon) but I can’t figure out what this does or how to change the “texture”.
Switching between Solid Line Style and Texture Line Style seems to make no difference apart from the line style in the underlying panel button changing a bit.

Can anyone tell me what this is for and how I should be using it please?

You have to switch to the Designer Persona and select a brush from there. Maybe one day we have brushes in APu?

Sorry, does not seem to work for decorations - even in the latest Windows beta, because there are no decorations in AD.

First said, works for "normal" strokes.

This appears to be an oversight I have logged this to be removed.

Please no. Decorations having Texture Line Styles would be nice.

It would be nice, but until either (a) Publisher has its own brushes or (b) Designer has Paragraph Decorations it can't work. So, for now, it's useless.

Edit: Looks like it does work in the Designer Persona of Publisher; thanks, Carl.

The Designer Persona in Publisher has both Brushes and Decorations so it does work there.

Cant say I have found any practical use for it though

Due to the fact that Boris Johnson is now our Prime Minister, punctuation, spelling and grammar will never be worried about ever again.  We now have far bigger problems to be worried about.

Maybe I am blind ... but where?

OK, found it in the Styles, but you need to have the brushes panel active / reachable to assign brushes.

I’ve tried to assign a Brush to a Decoration Stroke via the Designer Persona of Publisher but it always applies the brush to the text stroke rather than the decoration stroke.
However, if that icon is going to be removed, as Callum said above, then that’s the end of the discussion I suppose.
On the other hand, I think it would have been nice to be able to produce something like the examples in my attached image.

Oh, is that what it's doing. I hadn't figured out what was going on, so thanks for explaining that :)

That seems like a bug, by the way, since it's coming from the Paragraph panel.

Yes, that would be nice.

GarryP and I didn't get it to work in Publisher. If you have a paragraph decoration working with a textured stroke please let us know how you did it.

The paragraph decoration textured stroke is not an option on the Mac, it's not in 1.7.3 or the latest beta 556 😕  It is in the character panel but achieves the same result as the stroke panel. It would be nice to have it as a paragraph decoration though.

Yes, but @mpowell seems to have said that they got it working. Presumably, in the context of this conversation, that means they got it working as a paragraph decoration. It would be nice to know how.

From the screenshot in the first post, it does not look like the Paragraph panel in (I presume) the Windows version has a "Decorations" section as such either -- it looks like the same stroke options that in the Mac version is part of the Character panel Decorations section.

Because in the Mac version it is in the Character panel, I have to select some text for it to work, but aside from that it works like @carl123 mentioned above ... & I can't find any practical use for it either since it is applied to the text itself. It is also a bit buggy because the stroke size does not update when I select a vector brush -- the text is outlined in the (usually much too large) default size of the brush, which is not the stroke size shown in Decorations until I change it there.

That screenshot shows the Paragraph studio panel, and within it it is showing the Decorations section of the panel, and the stroke popup that you get from clicking on the stroke.

Just as this one does:

Thanks. That was not clear to me from the first screenshot. But as already mentioned, in the Mac versions (of all 3 apps) the Paragraph panel does not have a "Decorations" section:

Instead, it is in the Character panel:

There is also a Decorations section in the Character studio panel, with different options than the ones in the Paragraph panel. And it has a stroke section/popup that should apply to the kind of stroke you want to use when underlining some characters:
image.png.112b815c3c5ab6cf1a62cf413d6b1420.png

That is not the one @GarryP asked about, or that we've been talking about (though it would also be nice for the textured stroke to work there).

It's interesting that in the Character Panel, we have the decorations section, that shows underlining and strikethrough options, and a stroke. One might assume (as I have done) that the stroke setting would apply to the underline and/or strikethrough options, but the Tooltip for the stroke setting says otherwise:

image.png.f449d56bfc9da9f9f2b717416535e59d.png

There is no corresponding Tooltip for the stroke setting in the Decorations for the Paragraph panel.

Again, both Character and Paragraph are supposed to have decorations, and they accomplish different functions. But your screenshot seems to be from Designer, and based on @GarryP's screenshot we're talking about Publisher.

The bottom of Publisher's Paragraph panel should look like this:

It does as well in the Mac version of APu but expanded it looks like this:

531179604_APudecorations.jpg.5aab65edb762a8864879044cf7a3fadb.jpg

As you might expect, it can be applied on a paragraph by paragraph basis, but as you can see, there is no texture brush option. Only in the Character panel of all 3 Mac apps is there a "Texture Line Style" button. Because it is a character decoration, it can be applied on a character, word, paragraph, or whatever basis, depending on what is selected.

EDIT: Actually, there is also a "Texture Line Style" button in the APu Publisher Persona Stroke panel, but I don't think that is what we are talking about here.

It is missing in all 3 APu personas. All 3 show exactly the same options.
