  1. Hi! I have a shape with several pieces that I want to cut out. I have followed the instructions I found here: https://graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/119718/why-cant-subtract-complex-form-in-affinity-designer but it doesn't work. Somehow, I got it to work once with a different file but I'm not quite sure how, and now, I'm unable to reproduce that success with a new file. Is this a bug, or am I missing something? I want to cut out the red shape from the white background. When I cut it, it ends up looking like this, instead of the holes being cut out and showing the transparent background: What am I doing wrong? affinity-cutting-problem.afdesign
  2. Hi Walt, following some discussion under "Absolute beginner" here is an example of what I've come across. "Sample Squiggle" was a blank document, in which I made a random squiggle in black with the pixel tool. I then copied and pasted it (using Cmd C and Cmd V), and used the Move tool to slide the copied version away downwardss from the original. If you enlarge it to, say, 3,000% you will clearly see a mid-grey artefact attached somewhat unpredicatbly to the shape of the original. Less obvious is a very pale grey artifact, usually on the opposite side of the line. Some bits of the line are not affected at all, so far as I can see. I found three levels of grey. I would copy from my diagram, but in pasting it into a document you could see I would be corrupting it anyway, which would be confusing. But if you care to believe me I will say that I usually get more complicated blurring than this. I've put up the original diagram, renamed as "Wiring x", and at position 57 on the scale at the bottom of the page, and about half way between top and bottom there is a box with the legend 'Na 7' in it. The box is made of two black one-pixel-width lines, with the space between them filled with pink. A similar box, with the legend 'Na 5' is to be found at 47 on the bottom scale and a bit above the middle vertically; it show no sign of blurring. I can't say for certain whether this is something which I copied without the paste problem, or something I made from scratch. But this is what Na 7 looked like originally. The pattern of artefacts is similar, but different. The letter 'N' has artefaacts on both sides of its legs and of its diagonal. You will see that the original single-pixel line is still there in my 'Squiggle' example, but it has been lost in the Na 7 example. Interestingly, when I opened the diagram the squiggle vanished. Luckily I had saved it! Best regards, Tony. Wiring_x.afphoto Sample squiggle.afphoto
  3. The attached images show the difference in framing of the same image which are the same in both camera outputs RAW and jpg. The Microsoft Photo display shows the whole white lily. In Affinity Photo Editor the left side has cut off the petal and the right side is also trimmed. This is the first time I have noticed it and i will be more aware of it in future. Could this be a bug that needs to be resolved.
  4. Hi, I am a beginner and have loaded an image and wanted to cut out a part of the image and paste it back into an empty document. That should be the simplest requirement ever. BUT what I expected doesn't happen with the following steps: 1. I load a picture 2. go to Cut out 3. open a new document 4. go to Insert. Instead of the cut out part of the image appearing in the new image, only an empty area is shown. I have tried this at least 4 times with different images. It is always the same result. Who can tell me what I am doing wrong. Thank you for your support. Guenter
  5. We lack the possibility to set the line thickness (width) expressed in millimeters. Because the controllers of our machines (laser plotters) read the 0.001mm line as the cutting line. The possibility of implementing such a solution will allow us and many companies to completely switch from Illustrator to Anfinity and purchase many licenses.
  6. Hello, when I draw a line with as a stroke, I cannot cut the shape! As it can be seen in the video, I would want to cut the right-hand shape, like the shape on the left side but I cannot cut the shape with strokes ? I found another solution digging deep and I realized that I have "expand" the stroke then I would be able to execute the operation. However, with regular stroke, I would not be able to cut the shape? cut shape with stroke.mp4
  7. In Affinity Design, isn't there a way to cut a line at a nodal point? I'm experimenting with different ways to make index scales like you would use to make a ruler? I'm looking into making a round scale to fit around the circumference of a circle. Thanks for any help or suggestions. I'm experimenting a lot with Design! James
  8. Did Affinity have tool like Shape Builder tool in Illustrator that cut the shape from unnecessary line ? Thanks in advance Doron
  9. So, the first hangup of working in 1.7, you can't snip off half of the Bezier curve. It deletes both handles. So ppl are gonna have to learn how to approximate the middle of the curve and build that way. I dont know if this was an unintentional change, but if it was made intentionally, It's not really ideal. Thoughts?
  10. I am trying to copy the text in a column in a table. The program consistently quits when I use Command+Copy or Command+Cut. I am using a MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) with a 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB RAM and a SSD 768 GB drive, running macOS Mojave Version 10.14.5.
  11. Hello ! I noticed a bug that (seemingly) only happens when, instead of opening a file from my drive, I copy an image from the web then create a new file and paste it as a layer : when I want to isolate a part of that layer, I make a selection around that part, then either cut that selection to copy it to another layer or invert the selection and delete the rest. But here, in both cases, the whole layer gets cut or deleted, not taking my selection into account. I tried to do this through keyboard shortcuts and through the Edit menu, to the same result. I also noticed that copying and pasting a selection also copies and pastes the whole layer.
  12. Hi! How I am supposed to cut outlines? I've created a Polygon picture and want to fill some triangles as shadow parts with lines. I now need to cut these lines. Please have a look at the attached image. The pink marked parts should be removed for example. Thank you!
  13. When defining a stroke width, Affinity Designer (and Publisher) currently converts decimals more than one place to tenths. It is important to have the ability to specify decimals in the stroke width of a line up to four decimal places so that the software can be used to define vector cut lines in laser engraving software. Case in point - the users manual for Trotec Job Control states that for vector lines to cut with a laser, you must set them at a width of "0.001 mm or 0.00005 inches" (see attached screenshot). You currently cannot do that with Affinity Designer/Publisher, if you type in a width of "0.0036pt" (equal to 0.00005 inches) as the stroke width, the software will convert 0.0036 to zero. Actually anything less than 0.1 will get rounded down to zero. This is important functionality if we were to completely replace Illustrator & InDesign. Thanks.
  14. Ok, the newbie here again... I watched a video tutorial on removing the background. 1. It said to use the "Selection Persona"? I don't see that on the toolbar with the other personas. 2. Then it said to use the "Smart Selection Brush" to outline the object... I have a Selection Brush, but nothing says it's "smart"... is that the same thing?? 3. When I try to outline the object with the Selection brush, it makes double lines and I can't get rid of them with subtraction. They just jump around and become disconnected from other areas. 4. Then it said to use the "Refine Selection Tool" ... there's no tool in in my toolbag labeled "Refine Selection Tool" Egads!
  15. EDIT: Nevermind! I figured out what I was doing wrong. Thank you, though! I'm using Affinity Photo. This is the scenario: I have an 14 x 9 inch (landscape) jpg of an advertisement that I need to edit to fit an 8.5 x 11 inch (portrait) page. I need to cut and paste parts of the ad around in order to do this. I created an 8.5 x 11 inch document. Next, I placed the image onto the document. Naturally, some of the image falls off the document. As an image layer, I am unable to select part of the image, cut it and paste it onto a new layer. What happens is the entire image gets pasted onto the new layer. So, I converted the image layer into a pixel layer. Now, I am able to select a portion, cut and paste into a new layer, but the rest of the image (the part that fell off the document bounds) has disappeared. It has been clipped to the canvas. Unclipping the canvas is pointless because although it now shows the entire image, it defeats the purpose of creating an 8.5 x 11 document in the first place. What am I doing wrong? In Photoshop, I'm able to create a document of whatever size, place or drag in an image of any size, and manipulate the image as I need to and the parts that fall off the document bounds are still there.
  16. Ok, so I'll try to phrase this question as clearly as possible I am experimenting with cutting selection of one photo layer (background) into another that is a new tab in Affinity. With beginners luck I was able to get it how I wanted it to look, the selection that is, in the second photo (in the second tab) with the ability to RESIZE and MOVE. This is what I want, to be able to cut, copy and resize the selection from the first photo to the second one. But now I can't cut and copy a selection in such a fashion that it would be resizable in the second image like before. I think I played around with something in "refine" dropdown when selection brush tool was clicked. Please advise. Getting a bit frustrated trying to cut, copy, and resize the selection. Can only cut and copy it into the photo without ability to move it or make it smaller. Thank you!
  17. Am I overlooking something? I can't find a way to delete a point from a path that also deletes the line segment it's on. ex.: delete the half from a circle to get an open path representing a half circle (that is not closed). In AI you can direct-select a point and delete it, resulting in an open path - or select a line segment between two points and delete it, also resulting in an open path.
  18. Hi, team. On attached screenshot you can see word "HIERARCHY" with diagonal line on top. Tell me, please, how i can split "HIERARCHY" word by this diagonal line? Best, Andrew.
  19. Please honor the standard Windows hotkey convention, and your Windows users, and incorporate the following: CTRL + F4 as Close Window SHIFT + DELETE as Cut CTRL + INSERT as Copy SHIFT + INSERT as Paste I understand users can configure hotkeys, though many Windows users expect some or all of these hotkey sequence to work as expected. Further most users will 'fight with'/'bend to' application defaults rather than configure such application behavior details. These refinements will improve application usability and user efficiency. I also understand CTRL + W is defined as close window (is this a Mac convention? I have not seen this behavior in other Windows applications.). Retaining CTRL + W, and adding CTRL + F4 or replacing CTRL + W with CTRL + F4 are equally welcome refinements. I have not tested for the possibility in Affinity Publisher to allow for user configured multiple hotkey sequences for the same function (e.g. CTRL + X and SHIFT + DELETE both as cut). It is common for Windows users to be familiar with and use both, or prefer one over the other. Please consider incorporating this behavior in the Windows versions of Affinity Designer and Photo. Thank you for considering.
  20. I have this: I create another vector: And I want this: Without using Pixel Persona.
  21. In this short tutorial of a user request, I'll show you how to create an incision/ cut info graphic in Affinity Designer 1.6.1 and how to use it in Affinity Photo 1.6.7 as an image brush or as a vector graphic with the place function. Keep on drawin' Norbert

  23. When I upload any of my Raw images they are getting cut off/duplicated on the same image. I have attached a screen shot of what is happening. Has anyone else had this problem?
