  1. There is room for confusion on abbreviations for Affinity Photo and Affinity Publisher. For the sake of clarity, what if we refer to them as APh and APu respectively? Then we know what we're talking about. I don't know if this is the correct forum for this. But I thought I would at least put forward the idea.
  2. Designer, Publisher, and Photo version 1.7.3 in Mac. Layer -> Geometry Menu is different form icon order. See attachement Image.
  3. Hi, I cannot open the Batch processing window (Affinity crashes when i click "File->Batch"), plus my previously used batch jobs are no longer in the library. I really depend on these batch jobs, how can i get them back? Thanks. Affinity Photo 173 on macOS 10.14.6
  4. I've always found it difficult to learn how to do something without the need to do it and since I don't have a specific need at the moment for many of Affinity's features, getting to grips with some of them is a slow process. One of the problems I have is 'why would I need that feature?'. Although I'm tackling Design at the moment, some of its features seem based on Photoshop, of which I've no experience. For those in a similar position to me, the following website seems to complement Serif's help and fills in some of the gaps, especially regarding 'why?'. https://www.photoshopessentials.com/
  5. Hi guys, just wondering if there is a problem between Photo and saving files to Dropbox (prior to iOS 13)? I have experienced the issue where I have either created a file on the ipad, or open from the cloud and made changes and clicked on the save button, only to discover when I go to the desktop that for some reason, some of the changes I made are not there and or are multiple versions of the file, but none match the last set of changes I made. Unfortunately, a couple of times I had closed the file on the ipad and lost everything on those couple files and now I have to backtrack my steps to reconstruct them. I believe there was an issue at some point where connecting with Dropbox was questionable at best and or not supported by Photo and Designer, but now it seems like that issue was resolved. Still, the question about solid connection with saving and opening files with Dropbox remains. Please advise if there is a problem with saving to and from Dropbox and the iPad versions, since my workflow has made use of Dropbox integration since day one. If I need to change to iCloud, that would be a great inconvenience. In any case, getting to the bottom of this is very important so as to avoid inadvertently loosing any more work. Please advise. Sincerely, gangusCat

  8. Hey there, today, I set out to do a piece of environment art in Affinity Photo to see if it can hold up against PS. Unfortunately, it showed right away that a lot of my repetitive tasks require quite a few extra steps compared to my usual workflow. I have multiple renderings in the same resolution and want to drop them into one file but Affinity does not center dropped images so I have to drop, move and snap every image to the canvas. Since there are no smart objects in Affinity, I understand that the list of possible drag & drop features is rather short but an automatic centering option would be a big help. Thank you in advance! Sorry for typos, it's getting very late and my eyes are closing ^.^ TLDR: Is there a way to have dropped images (e.g. from the explorer) center automatically? Affinity Photo 1.7.3 on Win 7 Take care, Dziga
  9. Same problem in 1.7.3.481 Any comments from the Serif staff? Refine selection is completely useless... No improvements here whatsoever in about two years.
  10. I'd like a brush category "Recently used" on top of the list that automatically shows the ten (number could be configurable) most recently used brushes. Would make it much easier to switch between brushes of different categories. Alternatively (or additionally ) a category "Favourites" would be nice, to easily find frequently used brushes.
  11. With CTRL+left click on a layer icon it is possible to create a selection from the contents of this layer. In PS (I know, AP is not PS...) you can use SHIFT or ALT as modifiers for adding to, subtracting from or intersecting with an existing selection. I would like to see this in AP, too. For adding two or more layers to a single selection there is at least a workaround: make a group from the layers you want the selection from and CTRL+left click the group layer icon to get a selection made of the "summed up" content of each of the grouped layers. However I haven't either figured out a way to realize the other operations or how to modify an existing selection with "selection from layer".

  13. When sampling a color with the paint brush tool by pressing the ALT key, always the global color as it can be seen on the screen is sampled. If there are brightening or darkening layers above the current layer, the sampled color is brightened or darkened once more, which ends up in a completely wrong color. The actual color picker tool has a source setting "Current layer" which samples the correct color. So either the paint brush tool should consider the color picker tool's source setting when sampling a color or it needs an own setting for sampling colors. There is a dark blue circle on the middle layer used as sampling source. The top layer has a brightening effect. The color for the lower dot on the right was sampled with the actual color picker tool with source set to "Current layer", the color is correct. The color for the upper dot was sampled with the paint brush tool's inbuilt color picker by pressing ALT: the color chosen is already brighter than it actually is and is then brightened once more. 14. Stylus input on desktop (Mac) isn't nearly as smooth as on iPad, no matter what tablet drawing brand you use (I've tried a few). I've brought this up before, and it's kind of a biggie, considering there's a ton of illustrators, designers, photo retouchers/editors, using drawing/graphics tablets for their work. Some some reason this only happens with Affinity apps, and I haven't had this issue with any other graphics software. It's not a deal breaker per se, but it's very notable, and if you use a drawing tablet most of the day for your work, it can get quite frustrating (and could potentially put future users off of using the apps altogether). Furthermore, if you want to compete with the industry leaders (*cough Adobe), then you need to ensure that your stylus/pen input engine is pristine or at least on par with something like the industry standard, Photoshop. For some reason the pressure sensitivity has a tendency to spike or be slightly inaccurate and the lines aren't as smooth as they should be (often with small, but notable kinks and jitter). This is also very notable when using the Freehand Selection tool with a tablet. It's even more prevalent the more you zoom out of your canvas, causing weird jagged 90 and 45 degree angles in your lines/selections - almost as if the pen cursor is snapping to an invisible grid 90/45 degree grid. I usually do not work very zoomed in, so this can get very problematic throughout the work process, causing unwanted kinks and jagged lines which I've never experienced with any other drawing apps. To combat this, I've been using a third party plugin called Hej Stylus (hejstylus.com), and the pen input from my drawing tablet on desktop has been so much better within the Affinity apps while using it. It overrides the apps' default pen input in Affinity and replaces it with Hej Stylus's settings, which are much nicer and more accurate. When using the Hej Stylus app, I keep all the settings at an absolute minimum so that there isn't any additional smoothing, and all the app essentially does is override the default input. I don't necessarily want to use a third party app when working, but I'm doing it out of necessity. I think it's important to note that a desktop drawing tablet is a lot different from an iPad/Apple Pencil combo. The desktop styli/pens act differently and require different settings to perform the way that they should. Perhaps there's a way to get Eilert (the dev over at Hej Stylus) on board to help sort out the stylus input issues in Affinity apps. Sorry to keep going on about this, but as someone who uses a drawing tablet on desktop for ALL my work (as very many illustrators do), I really want to keep using Affinity without any tedious workarounds which takes extra time, and ultimately costs me and my clients money. Really hoping for a fix in the next update!! I've attached a screenshot here of the issue, and also attached the file: HejStylus Test.afphoto
  15. Inside the "Refine selection" dialog when I select "Transparent" I get a preview that is slightly different from the result after applying the mask. I made some screenshots to demonstrate this behaviour: 1. Make a selection, then choose "Refine Selection": 2. Choose "Transparent" from "Preview", the legs of the subject show only a very small halo: 3. Choose output as mask and apply, now the halo has become much more visible, which is quite different from the preview: Why is there a difference between the preview and the final result? (The images were taken from "Compositing in Photoshop From Start to Finish" with Bret Malley on http://craftsy.com )
  16. I came across an issue when refining a selection using the foreground or background brush. Sometimes there are areas in an image that just can't be processed by the Matte brush completely correct. So then I use the background or foreground brush to tell AP that a particular area definitely belongs to the background or foreground. But as a result those areas are always extended from background into the foreground and vice versa. It seems impossible to determine the correct brush distance from the foreground/background border in order to achieve a clean edge. I know there is Quick mask mode, where masking works as expected, but it would be much nicer for the workflow to stay inside the refine dialog and immediately be able to correct those areas misinterpreted by AP when using the Matte brush, without making it even worse. 19. I’m absolutely puzzled and surprised. So many people rave about Affinity Photo being better than Photoshop but at least photoshop can open and edit raw files. I have spent the last hour staring at the screen with a RAW file loaded and I cannot fathom what (if anything) I can do with it. Maybe I’m wrong but I’m guessing Affinity Photo is not capable of working with RAW files? Hope I’m wrong. Martin

  21. Hi Serif, I'm really unhappy right now. AP on Windows 10. After loading a scan (.tiff file) and working on a document for nearly two hours then hitting CTRL+S to save over the original file (on my desktop) I've got following error prompt: which would be ok if Photo didn't close the document at this moment without allowing me to export a copy... Yes, I'm an idiot and should save more. Or more often or whatever. I agree. My bad. But it's definitelly Affinity Photo's fault and huge error if such a thing even happens. How come AP even allows this to happen? How come that a copy in memory is wiped and user is not allowed to save the progress when Photo at this point knows very well it isn't able to save over the original file? Why Photo didn't make a working backup or something? This is classic Affinity SNAFU, guys.
  22. Hi there, I used a 3D effect and Outer Glow on the ball and a layer behind the ball with a brush of white paint. The jpg looks even uglier. See screenshots. Best regards, Puck.
  23. In the desktop version of Affinity Designer, when you apply an ‘Outline’ layer effect with a gradient fill you have full control over the opacity of that fill. I can’t see a way to vary the opacity of the ‘Outline’ fill in Affinity Photo for iPad. Is it possible, and if so, how?
  24. An olg bug or lack of feature is that we can't see which brush is selected. But I was able to look at its name when modifying it before. But with the last Bêta (AD and AP), I can only read: "Pinceau - selection / Brush - selection) when I modify a brush (or open its settings to look at its name)! The name of the brush, and why not the category should be display on the brush' settings panel (Category - name). An option to keep the same brush, same size, etc. with the different Brush Tools would be nice too, since it's when I needed to know which brushes I was using with the other Tools. (And spend time selecting and resizing other brushes). Improvements to the Brushes would be: Displaying the name of the selected brush when modifying it Highlight of the selected brush in the brushes panel An option in the context toolbar to keep the same brush with same setting (size, opacity, flow…) when switching brush tools If those options were available, I would have spend less time selecting and adjusting brushes in my last works!
  25. Dear Sir/Madam, I am unable to locate a way to delete a photograph in Affinity Photo. Many thanks, Anthony J Tarquinio
