appuser99 reacted to Helmar in HOW CAN I EXPORT EPUB WITH AFFINITY PUBLISHER
Why not get AFPub to export to Apple Pages in a rudimentary way? There's not even an TXT / RTF / HTML export, which one could use as a base for EPUB creation in Pages. Right now, especially if you work with Sections in AFPub, you're pretty stuffed when it comes to extracting formatted text to use in other applications.

    ---
    Hi,
We are pleased to announce that a new Customer Beta of Affinity Publisher (1.8.0.502) is now available as a download from the link above.
As this is a 'Stability and General Testing' beta it is considered to be not suitable for production use. This means that you should not attempt to use it for commercial purposes or for any other activity where you may be adversely affected by the application failing, including the total loss of any documents.
We hope you enjoy the beta, and as always, if you've got any problems installing or running up, please don't hesitate to post in this thread.
Any problems actually using this version please make a new topic in this forum and we'll get back to you as soon as we can. Please feel free to leave general suggestions and comments in the Discussion Forum.
Many thanks for your continued feedback.

    New Features and Major Improvements
    IDML Import
This build includes an importer for the IDML ((Adobe) InDesign Markup Language) file format. Many entities, attributes and properties are not currently imported. In general if a feature currently has no native support it is unlikely to be imported entirely successfully. In addition to this, please find below a list highlighting features we know are not currently supported fully.
    Document
    - Document User details
    Spread / Page Items
    - Promoted master page items
    - Overprint properties
    - Arrowheads
    - Text on path
    Transparency / FX
    - Directional Feather
    - Gradient Feather
    Text Frames
    - Content transparency / FX for text vs text + frame
    - First baseline offset
    Story Items
    - Text layout can differ due to differences in composition and metric vs optical kerning
    - TOC
    - Index
    - Page number fields
    - Hyperlinks
    XLSX Import
This build includes an importer for the XLSX (Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet) file format. Excel files are placed as tables. The following are not currently supported.
    - Formulae are imported as their calculated result value, which Excel stores in the file alongside the formula
    - Local formatting is imported, but global Table Styles currently are not
    - Overflowing cell content is handled differently in that Excel allows content of an overflowing cell to draw on top of adjacent cell if the cells are empty
    Column Rules
The facility to add (vertical) rules / lines between columns in a multi-column text frame. The rules can be configured via the Text Frame Panel
    Fixes and Smaller Updates

Empty Picture Frames weren't showing in Assets Panel thumbnail previews
Replacing Master Pages containing Picture Frames with promoted context could distort content

Maybe. If you can't select it it may be coming from a Master Page.
Diagnostic tool for this situation, in general: First, VIew > Show Text Flow. Then View > Zoom > Zoom to Document. Look for red dots. If you don't see any, examine each Master Page for red dots.

I like the new icons, they integrate nicely in the dock. The only critique I could have is that they are bigger than most other icons. But then, I usually run them in full screen, so that makes sense.

appuser99 reacted to Jugibur in Link instead of embedding image
Linking an image instead of embedding it, would be useful if you're working on different documents with the same file, i.e. a logo in a design phase. So if you change that logo it will be respected in every file it is linked.
Besides that it doesn't increase your Designer file, that could be crucial if you're working with large files and make a lot of versions / copies of your Designer file.
I think it's like the new version of the Photoshop Smartobjects (CC version).

Would be great if this makes sense to you too and isn't too hard to implement. Thanks!

John Gibson, you could give monthly, substantial donations to Serif. I'm sure Serif will tell you their PayPal. I find the crowdfunding idea interesting too.
Just this morning I received a popup banner from WeekCal, the calendar app I've purchased and been using for years now on iOS. They asked me to switch to a subscription based model. I was thinking: oh my, them too? If they change to a subscription based model I need to change software, EVEN THOUGH I've paid for their software.
For hardware, companies in most western countries need to give a warranty for a certain amount of time. For some it's 2 years, others 10. Different for different categories and countries. If the released product is faulty, they need to take it back or replace it. With software that's simpler than with hardware.
However, if BMW releases a new car, this doesn't mean that everyone is getting a free upgrade. A customer can sell his old BMW, and upgrade to a new one. Some people ride their cars 2 years, others 20 years.
I find this "forced subscription or shut down" model is not to my liking and not within my financial abilities. Maybe some people can afford it, I can't. I had to say good bye to Adobe upgrades (even though I loved the software), goodbye to Ulysses upgrades (I run my old version, plus purchased Scrivener), and maybe I need to say good bye to WeekCal (but can hopefully continue to use my current version).
Also, I don't understand why everyone needs to get filthy rich. Aren't there enough rich people who store their money overseas and are useless to society already? I think it's possible to run a great company, have great income, and that's that. No need to lose ground contact. I'm sure that's possible with a user base of a couple of tens or even hundred thousand customers.

I love my CS3. It's so simple! Clean, easy to use. Everything is just there and works and is self explanatory. When I downloaded the QuarkXpress 2018 demo a week ago I couldn't even figure out how to start a book project. I gave up after 15 minutes, moved the whole thing into the paper bin. Unfortunately CS3 doesn't support retina displays, plus I don't have a portable license. My CS3 is basically sentenced to live and die on my MacBook Air 2011.
Will start with a book cover project on my new MacBook Pro in Affinity Publisher beta tonight. Really looking forward to it.

Hello John, your words are harsh and straight out hostile, i hope that its just a misunderstanding that you are attacking others personally.

There is an "infinite amount of users" its the human population growth which is growing each year.
Even if there where a theoretical saturation of consumption, Serif would then release a new version - a paid upgrade and the sales begin again.
Serif hasn`t even begun yet in catering to at least ~1 billion potential customers which would happen if RTL writing was available inside the Affinity range.
Here an image showing the distribution of just one of the many scripts(here is the Arabic script distribution) which happen to be RTL writing, there are more scripts like Hebrew which also is RTL.

Subscriptions are like renting a house, you won´t get attached to the area/product and can and will probably move on to other areas/prodcuts like you dear John are doing while abandoning the Adobe renting area.

Oh my.   I rather think that I would leave it up to the people at Serif and Affinity to decide how to develop their products and how to introduce them to the world.   Bentleys, Waterford, Winnie the Pooh, Peter Rabbit, Harris tweed, bagpipes, etc. (and software)  are not the same if mass-produced otherwhere.  Look what happened to Wedgewood.    Look at what has happened to Adobe.   So far, the Affinity software is absolutely wonderful.    It is astounding to find people who care this much to make ANYTHING that is exceptional in the 21st Century.   Satiny smooth software, extraordinarily helpful Video tutorials and online Help, and the Forums — peopled by Affinities who are not only extremely helpful, but invariably gracious.    I would give them the room to proceed at their pace, not at Richard Branson’s.  I am sure they will do what is right for them.

INX was originally supposed to allow transfer of files between versions of InDesign but was not meant for use by outside software, so it was part way to what IDML has become, but only part way.
The only version of InDesign that supports both INX and IDML is CS4, so you can use INX to transfer files among CS2, CS3, and CS4, and use IDML for CS4 and newer.

    Kinda stuck, aren't you?
It may be that your only option for CS3 would be to run a batch script to output PDFs if you have a lot to convert. Q can make those PDFs into editable Q files just as APub can.
Another option may be if the script at Peter Kahrel's web site works in CS3. It can convert the indd or inx to idml (and pdfs) to any of the others, so inx to idml or even the older indd format to idml, etc.
    http://www.kahrel.plus.com/indesign/batch_convert.html
If that script works in such an older version, it would be good to do for both future-proofing and/or eventual conversion to another application.
Or, like I do, which is to (usually) leave past work in its original format and just create new work int he new application.

Why not use the Colour panel? You can at least have it on view most of the time.
An alternative is to set the Tools panel to have 2 columns (View > Customise Tools) you will then get the colour wells permanently on display at the bottom.
