AffinityJules got a reaction from brucet in Command J, "Layer>Duplicate selection" doesn't work in version 2.4.2
Command + J works fine for me, but if I were to try it with an image layer it would not work - it would copy the whole layer.
Try using a pixel layer - that should work.

AffinityJules reacted to Art51 in Alita Battle Angel poster - Hand-drawn raster art
Just wanted to share a recent alternative movie poster I created for the film, Alita Battle Angel.
The poster is completely hand-drawn in Affinity Photo 2. As I've noted before, I enjoy the hand-drawn and coloured posters by the likes of Drew Struzan and contemporary artists like Paul Shipper and Kyle Lambert.
This work was completed primarily using the Natural Pencil 2B brush (the underlying sketch) and the Round Soft Brush (colouring over and clouds) with more Natural Pencil 2B coloured pencil over the top for the highlights and detail. There is some use of texture brushes such as spatters and custom dust etc. There are no fancy filters or tricks used. I treat the canvas and drawing as though I were working with real physical media and so start with a scanned 'paper' background. I use an XP Pen pen display connected to my MacBook Pro as my workstation.

@AffinityJules Ha...you may be exactly right! Clarification would help.

No, it isn’t just you. I wanted to mention exactly the same thing, but I’ve been putting it off!

AffinityJules got a reaction from Komatös in Wattpad Cover Preview - Made in style of Stranger Things
Hmm...
do you not think that there should be shadows present casted by the 3 new characters to help ground them to the floor?
The 3 of them look like their hovering and, the figure behind is way too big to my eyes.

Good thought. The Stabilizer is enabled in that screenshot, from what I can see.

AffinityJules got a reaction from Archangel in Welcome to the Gallery - Northern Lights in the style of Benson
I remember Tony Hart and "Vision On" very well....showing my age here but what the hell.
I actually submitted some artwork I did for one of their many competitions - I didn't win anything but it was very exciting to see my picture on tv.

Realism, in the sense of being realistic, means to consider that which is real (tangible, existent) in the here & now. Pessimism & optimism are about considering what might happen in the future.

One final image was created in DAP 8 and edited in Affinity Photo.
Northern Lights in the style of Benson.
Does anyone remember Vision On and Take Hart? I hope the video brings back memories. Not to mention Serif's Learn to Draw CD-ROM.

AffinityJules reacted to privateEyeIllustration in Pen Tool Technique
This is more of a piece of info to share with newer users, especially to those who utilze the pen tool. Sharing knowledge is critical - helping someone in their journey in mastering technique is one of the greatest rewards in life. Clearly, Affinity's pen tool is fantastic. So maybe you know this, or perhaps not. For quite some time I was unaware that you could adjust anchor points in the pen tool's pressure setting independently of one another (where anchor points follow one another uniformly). To get around this, use the option key on a mac to scale anchor points independently. You will see it makes your lines look much more interesting. Additionally, the command key sometimes does this as well. Experiment with it and make awesome art.

AffinityJules got a reaction from Callum in How to remove 'something behind something'
What I normally do when faced with a situation like this is: clone/inpaint/heal as per normal, or whatever works best.
Then, I would use a smudge brush to drag the missing hair parts so that they reconnect with each other. You would have to set the smudge brush strength quite high, 75% or more other wise they might not be visible.
There are other ways I'm sure, but this method has always worked for me.

AffinityJules reacted to animositysomina in Canva
The only question is whether Affinity will offer a subscription in the future? I have bought a lot of brushes for your software. Especially on the Ipad, I am not willing to pay any subscription fees. I have purchased your software twice (v1. & v2). You say there are no plans for subscriptions at this time. But just wait until the Canva bosses change their minds, because greed is a virus in upper management. RIP, Adobe Alternative.

AffinityJules got a reaction from R C-R in selection tool will not cut and copy
Sounds like you're trying to copy & paste an image layer.
Try rasterising it first.
Then it should work fine.

AffinityJules got a reaction from Alfred in How would I brighten just a portion of an image?
See picture below.
You can also use a brightness and contrast adjustment, or a curves adjustment to brighten up the picture, then as with the levels adjustment use a soft black brush to paint out the areas you don't want brightened.
Note: all adjustment layers come with their own mask - this makes it quick and simple to use a black brush without faffing about making new masks.

AffinityJules reacted to Kasper-V in Grandad goes dancing on May Day: a video
Another video!
When I lived on the Isle of Wight, we could hardly move without falling over a Morris Dancer. As a folksinger, I naturally met and made friends with a lot of dancers and musicians there. Some years ago, a lady name Helen Akitt wrote this funny song poking gentle fun at her Morris chums, a parody of the lovely song The Whitsun Dance, and I've been singing it ever since I discovered it. The assets in this still--the grass, trees and flowers--actually came from DrawPlus. I saved them as svg and imported them into AD. The unusual format with decorations down each side is because I made the 'pages' in A3 format with a view to printing them some time; YouTube resizes everything to 16:9, which would leave black bars at the sides.
And now I'm going to have a rest . . .

My latest picture quiz round.
Tv set created in designer.
20 placeholders inside the TV image for the images.
All images converted to B&W and a levels adjustment on the majority of images.
I created masks to obliterate the backgrounds in the images to take away the fussy details. in APhoto.
designed on an A4 will be enlarged to A3 one per team on the night.
Comments on the creation and final (almost) presentation as always are welcome.
have fun with identifying the faces.
As always I look forward to @William Overington blistering observations which are 2nd to none
