Here's another test, this time with a photo. It's a bit rough around the edges (jagged pixels), so a bit more tweaking would be needed to make it look a bit smoother.

For a few days now I've been playing around with layer effects and some procedural filters – it's super fun and I love the results it can generate!
This is the result this morning, based on my own logo and 100% pure Affinity Photo magic, and (except for the very last couple of steps) nondestructive.

Maybe I'll release a macro for this sometime, if I can manage to squeeze it into a clean sequence.
It'll work with almost any kind of base – images, texts, vector layers.
This is what the base result will look like after the macro is applied, everything else is layer effects (and a background texture):

Hot damn. You're reading my mind, that's what I just realised. Oh wow.
From the looks of it, I assumed it was a normal mask. Maaan. Still, you get the option to refine it, and Alt/Option-Leftclick works on them too? But why does it only show up for adjustment and live filter layers like this and not fill layers as well? I don't get it.

V1 and V2 are behaving the same, but the Layers panel presents a built-in mask differently. You are misinterpreting V2's thumbnail of a built-in mask as an independent 'regular' mask because it is presented to the right of the thumbnail of an Adjustment or Live Filter.

    Again you have misunderstood me.
    This thread is a wreck.

A Fill Layer does have a built-in editable raster mask, the very same as the built-in mask of an Adjustment or Live Filter. The difference is the reduced accessibility of the Fill Layer's mask.

You're witnessing a bug but wrongly assuming it is correct behaviour, and then inventing an explanation for the observed behaviour.
The truth: the Colour panel is wrongly displaying the Fill Layer's fill in the primary colour well instead of the real primary colour of the brush tool.
Affinity 1.x did not have the bug.

I have understand you from the beginning and felt your frustration with others failing to understand you. You have been saying that there is inconsistent reduced editabilty of the built-in mask of Fill Layer versus the built-in mask of Adjustment and Live Filter.

No, that's just not true, Bruce! There's a separate, regular layer mask added. That's what I'm demonstrating!

Just click the Mask button at the bottom of the Layers panel. (That's in 2.1. In 2.0, click the Mask button and select (I think) Mask from the choices.)

Glad to hear its now displaying correctly, This is a Mac specific issue and is not how it's supposed to work, each axis should been drawn independent of the performance settings, this will hopefully be fixed in a later update. I've bumped the logged issue with your report in this thread. 🙂

On iPad, we have „horizontal triangular“ wich seems to fit your requirement

Set your 'Display' setting to 'Metal' and restart the app and set your grid to -180 and -60 again and the third axis should re-appear, there's a known issue logged with the developers which causes this third axis to fail to render at certain angles when the Display render is set to either 'Software' or 'OpenGL' under Preferences > Performance.

    Try -180 and -60 instead of 30 and 150.

I'm always amazed how much plasticity a simple Lighting filter can add to an otherwise rather flat image.
I used the Paint Mixer Brush quite extensively, painting over a stock photo of a lily with a coarse bristle brush and adding some layer effects.
This was just for fun and to unwind, nothing serious. 😌
I thought I'd share it anyway, maybe it inspires someone to try something similar. 😊
    Cheers!

    @Mr. Doodlezz,
Based on your inspiration, I "painted" this picture. I also used a stock photo from Pixabay and used a brush from Affinity Photo's repertoire to make the colour changer function look like an oil painting. In addition, I used the Lighting Filter just like you.

Yes It's so annoying, that we get forced into a feature that a couple of people demanded. Please integrate a toggle for this! This is also not something I wouln'd want to switch quickly, so you can put the toggle in the preferences. This really slows down my working process since I work with geometric forms a lot and a round the corners with different radius's. Also this is counter intuitive when using the shape builder tool.
In General: Please think about your change management. When you implement a change like this, keep in mind that you might have users that do not benefit from it because it's destroying their workflow. It's ok to force the change on people so they can experience the change, but make it optional after all.
In Addition: I know you have a lot on your plate but just as a suggestion. When you change something that already worked in a particular way you could add a small comment popup next to the tool with an info like "We change the behavior of this tool. Click here if you want to know more or don't like it" and than it opens up the help article that describes how to deactivate it.

Oh wow, thanks for the quick confirmation, @loukash! Man, I wish that was toggleable in the settings though. 😞
