The software version can be seen on the splash screen and the About dialog (in application menu, Affinity Photo > About).
If you’ve purchased from the Mac App Store— updates are done automatically next time you run your software after it is available in the Mac App Store. If this does not happen for you, open the Mac App Store app and go to the Updates page and then Store > Reload page or press CMD+R. This should hopefully force the update to show. Apple sometimes phase roll outs around the world which can mean it may take up to 72 hours for your update to be available.
If you’ve purchased from the Affinity Store— each time you start the software it will check for updates and offer to download and install any available update, or in the application main menu there is an option Check for Updates. You can download the latest installer by logging into the affinity store here and find the order in your account and use the "download" button in there. Alternatively, this new release (and previous versions of Affinity Photo for macOS) can be downloaded from this link (that installer is NOT for Mac app store purchases and needs a product key).
NOTE: This was originally released as 1.8.0 on the Affinity Store and the Mac App Store. Affinity Photo 1.8.0 on the Mac App Store had a permission missing that caused a problem with plugins. That build has been replaced with an otherwise identical 1.8.1 build. The Affinity Store version did not have this problem, but has been rebuilt to keep numbering systems in sync with the Mac App Store.

IDML import – import InDesign® IDML files, including all text styles, master pages, guides, pinned objects and more, directly into Affinity Publisher. Live preflight checking – customise the app’s all new Preflight panel to receive live warnings for possible errors in your document, including poor image resolution, bleed hazards, overflowing text, spelling errors, missing images or font resources, and more. XLSX import – import spreadsheet data from Excel, Apple Numbers or LibreOffice in XLSX format as a standalone table or inline with your text frames. Document merge – merge multiple documents together into a single file and take advantage of text style mapping, index merging and master page control, whether you’re combining whole documents or selecting page ranges to import. Smart master pages – effortlessly swap master pages and migrate edited content from any page to a new master page layout in a single click without losing any of your work in the process. Collect resources – organise all image resources into a single folder location and share with others in your network. New Anchors panel – easily manage anchors in your document and create new ones from selected text. Apple keyboard shortcuts for text editing —use Apple default keyboard shortcuts for text editing and entry for an even more streamlined workflow Text column dividing lines – add lines to separate columns in text frame settings. Hello,
Affinity Designer 1.8 is a significant change to the currently shipping 1.7 version. Files edited in this version will not be backwards-compatible with the shipping 1.7 version. As such, we would not recommend using this 1.8 version for critical or production work at this stage. It is inevitable that there were will be a number of issues with 1.8 but we hope these will be minor and aim to resolve any issues very quickly, so please use it and explore the improvements, but also do keep in mind that you may find snags and we would appreciate your help with finding and reporting these to us.
If this is your first time using a customer beta of an Affinity app, it’s worth noting that the beta will install as a separate app - alongside your store version. They will not interfere with each other at all and you can continue to use the store version for critical work without worry.
With all that said, we hope that you will enjoy the new capabilities introduced in this release and we look forward to any and all feedback you give to us.
    Many thanks!
    Matt

    Changes this build
New brushes (raster and vector). These will replace your original supplied brushes but should keep any that you have edited, created or imported. If you may be in any way upset about losing your brushes if this goes wrong I would definitely suggest opening the old beta first and simply exporting the categories you require just to be safe! Further tweaks to the New Document dialog and additional presets Further tweaks to Expand Stroke and geometry operations Node/Pen Tool improvements: You can now cycle the selected node handle(s) forwards and backwards from the keyboard using [ and ]. If you have a node selected on a sub-curve then the 'Reverse Curve' command will reverse just that curve rather than all curves. It is possible to show the curve orientation using a toggle on the context toolbar. Document resize command should play better with shapes that have 'absolute' sizes Improved expression parser (try typing formulae into the Transform panel's boxes, for example) Improved PDF import Numerous other fixes and tweaks
    Changes since 1.7
Overhauled the “File -> New” dialog - user templates are now supported Implemented unified toolbar for appropriately modern macOS versions Improved the results of Expand Stroke Improved the reliability of Boolean Geometry operations Fixed issues with grids which appeared to jump while zooming and had issues with gutters Improved dragging objects between artboards (takes into account "Edit All Layers" toggle) Improved geometric add to allow a single shape so we can unite shapes to remove overlapping areas Improved SVG export to not simplify structure, as some people require the original structure Fixed Styles to show styles that would normally be invisible Fixed selection of artboards and / or contents Fixed EPS import sporadically failing to load objects Fixed PDF export so embedding colour profile always converts image colour spaces to match the profile Fixed crash when loading some corrupt JPEGs (valid image data, but corrupt following data) Improved embedded document bounding boxes Fixed deletion of brushes / styles / etc to actually remove the raster data (to reduce file size) Fixed PSD export to include checks for empty rasterised layers Fixed PSD export of hidden layers Fixed angle cursors when the view has been rotated Fixed Layer Effects not handling changes to document DPI when the dialog is open (using Points as a unit would continue to use the old DPI) Fixed crash on vector export for specific arrangement of composites and clips Added Remove Columns button on the context toolbar for Designer and Photo for text frames with columns for documents created in Publisher Improved memory use with branching undo history and with replacing image nodes Updated PANTONE Solid and Bridge Palettes Fixed Create Palette from CMYK images results in RGB colours Improved performance of operations with large selections and improved performance of making selections of large numbers of objects Fixed selection problems with multiple objects of varying line weights Improved PDF import support for DeviceN bitmaps based on LAB colour space Improved PDF export of clashes between bitmaps with/without k-only Fixed PDF export "Rasterise nothing" allowing through bitmaps with alpha channels Fixed crash importing PSD files containing embedded colour profiles with unicode characters in their name Improved performance of PDF import with groups containing more than 5,000 children Fixed OpenType that could fail to apply 'liga' near end of line Fixed Text Justification to split ligatures correctly Improved PDF import matching of unknown fonts

    Hello,
We are pleased to announce the immediate availability of the third beta of Affinity Photo 1.8 for macOS.
Photo 1.8 is a significant change to the currently shipping 1.7 version, so, as ever, I would strongly urge users to avoid the 1.8 beta for critical work. This is a pre-release build of 1.8 - we will release more builds before 1.8 ships. Things will be broken in this build - please use it to explore the new features and not for real work.
If this is your first time using a customer beta of an Affinity app, it’s worth noting that the beta will install as a separate app - alongside your store version. They will not interfere with each other at all and you can continue to use the store version for critical work without worry.
It’s also worth noting that we aren’t done yet - we are still working through reported bugs from previous releases and hope to fix as many as possible before the final release of 1.8.
With all that said, we hope that you will enjoy the new capabilities introduced in this release and we look forward to any and all feedback you give to us.
    Many thanks (as always),
    Affinity Photo Team

    +1
I'd most likely use custom fields for running headers and footers (e.g. last occurence of "header_1" text style, chapter name) and for custom text variables (e.g. issue number in a magazine)

    Hi,
We are pleased to announce that a new Customer Beta of Affinity Publisher (1.8.0.556) is now available as a download from the link above.
As this is a 'Stability and General Testing' beta it is considered to be not suitable for production use. This means that you should not attempt to use it for commercial purposes or for any other activity where you may be adversely affected by the application failing, including the total loss of any documents.
We hope you enjoy the beta, and as always, if you've got any problems installing or running up, please don't hesitate to post in this thread.
Any problems actually using this version please make a new topic in this forum and we'll get back to you as soon as we can. Please feel free to leave general suggestions and comments in the Discussion Forum.
Many thanks for your continued feedback.

    Hello,
We are pleased to announce the immediate availability of the second beta of Affinity Photo 1.8 for macOS.

    Hey WaySayer,
Welcome to the Affinity Forums and thank you for coming here to post.
We are currently trying to collect as many CR3 files as we possibly can to further improve support for these files. Could I kindly ask you to upload a few samples to the developer Dropbox link found in this thread:
I am also seeing reports of crashes on iPad Air and some of the smaller non-pro iPads. This is also being looked at. Thank you.

I wrote a review on the App Store, saying Affinity Photo only crashes on my iPad Air. Then I got a refund from Apple, so my review has disappeared.
i got a response from a developer asking me to post here so they could address it. Not really my problem now, but I don’t like to ignore people who are well-intentioned.  I got one photo developed from RAW, and then nothing ever worked.  I tried to develop Canon CR3 compressed RAW files.  They’re pretty large, 20MB+.
Apple’s Photos app also crashes occasionally, but if I save a cropped version first, it helps.  Maybe it needs an iPad Pro or maximum memory.

Jens Krebs got a reaction from Paul Mudditt in Affinity Designer 1.8 New features list?
No, it isn't ... buy the software with the features it currently has, if you need them, otherwise don't.
Adobe and Quark are as quiet about this as Serif and only tell people what's new when the release date is nearing and they are sure what they can include.
In the past, Serif has been more open about this, and even kept public roadmaps for Designer and Photo. They were removed when Publisher came out. As I understand, people started moaning about ,their' feature not being developed first and complaining about some things staying on the roadmap for six or more months whereas other things got done quicker than expected and even got their panties in knotts when a feature was released that hadn't been on the roadmap, because they thought this had held up work in areas they considered more important ... I guess there simply is no pleasing everyone and as not talking about unreleased features takes less effort and creates less ruckus amongst users, they decided to take this road and keep their mouths shut until there is something to talk about.
I am sure that you -- and everyone else -- get's the news as soon as there's something to see, and unless the beta process is changed drastically, you'll even get to try stuff out and give your input before release. :o)

Jens Krebs reacted to BigStef in CMYK Black Overprint regression ?
Hi @Jens Krebs, thanks to be so "obstinate" on this case :-)
But @MikeW is right : Black 100% pure is mandatory in press job.
Actually in V 1.8 the only issue is with the text itself :
Shadow with swatche "Black 100% CMYK process color with overprint" work very well (better then V 1.7) Black square with "Multiply" on layer and opacity at 60% (i.e.) work very well Text with swatche "Black 100% CMYK process color with overprint" should over print background but does not in V 1.8 (while it IS working in V 1.7) Now I have opened your last "test_new.afpub" file and all text were NOT overprinting the background (see attached i have done with your file).
Now I have done a test in just selecting "Multiply" on the text layer and it work. But this is not how it should be because I have already selected "Overprint" in the swatche color. If I have a book with 60 pages to manage, i want to be assured that my black text overprint background. This is why this topic is open.

Jens, if you can see the text when the black color is switched off in Acrobat Preview, it isn't 100%k.

It honors it as long as it stays a Affinity Designer format, but when you exported it to EPS. And load it back in later, it's back to pt or px. Both highly unusable. I want it to (en)forced within the whole designer application to mm.
And that goes for the document size 'sheet' and the shapes as well, fonts and so on. Hopefully this will be adressed some time soon.

Jens Krebs reacted to JCD2016 in Set Units to MM (millimeters) application wide
When I create a design, using MM (millimeters as units) and export it to let's say EPS. Open this back again, i'm back in px (pixel) units. Somehow the application does not allow me to ALWAYS use Millimeters, as this is the most logical unit within sign-graphics, nobody uses pixel units in signage.
Perhaps the solution to this problem is, just like Adobe does; choose what you want to use from the application it self, and it will create or interpret loaded ('strange formats' outside Affinity) always with that unit. Saves me alot of work, since plotting vinyl does only take EPS/ AI in Summa's WinPlot.

Sorry, I can't confirm such improvement of v531 with your .afpub. – (btw: a 100K text as PDF/X-4 does overprint already in APub 1.7.3)
    – Instead it appears that in your .afpub it even does NOT overprint the black of a gaussian blurred 100 K text // ... and is different to BigStef's file in that point to me:

    • Jens' afpub, generic cmyk profile, X-4:     test_new_generic prof X4.pdf

    • BigStef's .afpub, fogra 39, X-4:    test-cmyk-shadow-v-1-8_ot X4.pdf

Like MikeW I also see still in v531 issues with overprinting 100 K, both in PDF 1.7 and in multiply color mode.
