Dutch, I came here for exactly this topic, how to import the brush. I was familiar with importing categories, but in the case of this file (arrow brush.afdesign) it doesn't seem to work. I can't select the file when i go there via Import Categories. I can double click the file in the finder, after which it is opened in AD as a regular image.

And thank you, Ronnie, for sharing this!

I have seen this topic come up pretty often and thought maybe I should post this resource here.
I know some people need to have native vector arrow shapes in their work so I created a brush for that you can use until arrows are implemented fully in the the application.

Just import them into your brush pallet.

    cheers :)

So, I fell in love with Affinity after about an hour of playing with it. I bought it and started bringing my favorite assets over from Photoshop and Illustrator, including some styles I have been using for years on my web projects. I thought perhaps others could use them too, so here they are with a bonus set of sticker styles.

Enjoy if they're of interest to you.

UPDATE: New version 2.0! This time the gradients and strokes are tool editable. No more trips to the Effects Panel. This gives better and easier control of the styles.

BONUS: By request, 4 atmosphere styles. Included is the AD file with all styles applied for you to play with. Will likely only open in the latest beta. Sorry.

BONUS: Dream Metals styles! Aluminum, Gold, and Copper.

Incidentally, if you're enjoying painting to add texture and shading, you really really need to keep a look out for the start of the Photo beta - we have some brushes from Paolo Limoncelli who has done something utterly incredible and the brushes just look completely out of this world - the guy is an absolute genius!

I'd really like to take a look at your file in a bit more detail - if you ever fancy sharing it with me then just send it to mpriestley at seriflabs.com - I'll obviously never use the file for anything other than for drooling over! :)

So... I wanted to see how Affinity Designer's pixel painting feature set stacked up to Photoshop's with a little experiment.

I had created this Bunny illustration in Photoshop CS4 (yes I know I'm a little behind the curve) and decided to take a crack at it in AD. I was excited with some earlier attempts at painting in AD so I thought a back to back comparison would really reveal it's strengths and/or weaknesses. The original image on the left is PS the recreated AD image is on the right.  The other two images are from AD with a background added.

Years ago I used to be an airbrush artist and I worked out a workflow in PS where I used the paths as "frisket" to created selections to "airbrush" inside of.  The AD piece at right is done in a similar fashion. I created paths of the various objects, arranged them on layers and painted inside them using the great selection of brushes available.  But with AD I was finding I could work a little more flexible and more "un-destructive" allowing for more freedom to experiment and play with ideas... for instance the whiskers are strokes that I can continue to tweak if needed, the high lights on the ears are also strokes that could be further refined and a lot of the "painting" are actually effects and not painted at all, so those would be adjustable after the fact as well...

...all in all I was very pleased with the outcome and more importantly the "workflow" exceeded my expectations. For me, truly this is the perfect workflow that I have been wanting for years, a real balance of vector and pixel that delivers on what it promises - finally!

Now I'm not dis'ing Photoshop, and I don't want to start an Adobe bashing thread...  I just thought a comparison of what I discovered in my working method might benefit others and also I wanted to thank the Serif team for offering all of us a solid choice!

It's basically a cut and paste job, but one I thought worth sharing. Congratulations to the Affinity devs for their excellent work so far!

[edit] We'd appreciate it if you could share our Twitter or Facebook status updates about the award, it'd really help spread the word about the awesome recognition from Apple and the discount! Thanks! [/edit]

If you have bought the MAS version, you can download and install the beta from here. Both versions can be installed simultaneously without one overwrite the other.

Yes, dashed lines will be available in the next update of the MAS version.

Continuing the tutorials I've done, here is another that explains how easy it is to change the parameters of a simple brush and turn it into "drops" of water.

    Hello Everybody,

My name is Craig, I work as a laboratory technician for an automotive company. My real passion however is creating artwork. After a long time using 3d software I've decided the best way to improve my skills is to get back to basics and learn how to draw properly, learning how to use Affinity is an extension of that. Good times! I've never really been one for showing my artwork to the masses but I would like to change that and show my work to my fellow AD users. Hopefully I will pick up some good skills and advice along the way.

    Take care everybody.

This mock design has been flying around my head, since 1984. It was my attempt at designing a logo, that contained letters that create shapes. This is the firm that supplied the helicopters for Airwolf.

It still takes me ages, but I'm learning...I have used theses filters, glass and onyx. These give the desired effects.

So after a few weeks playing with Affinity tonight I decided to scan in a drawing to see what I could come up with. I have to tell you I love this software.

I first traced the outline and filled with black to create a solid silhouette, I then created all the other objects in front.

    Hope you like!

So I find that sometimes when you mess around trying to figure ways of doing thing you tend to stumble across new things.

I encourage tinkering around you might stumble across  something interesting you can use in your work later.

I was messing around with creating my own pixel based texture brush and I came across something interesting.

I could actually make a somewhat fake 3d brush from a shaded rounded brush.

What's the hint or tip you've appreciated the most when using Affinity Designer, or the hint/tip you wish you'd been told early on?

Whether it's for efficiency, accuracy, or achieving something that you just can't do in other apps, what would you pass on to a newbie? Obviously the forum is packed full of some fantastic tips, and some experts can write (or have already written) a book son design, so to help distill what's most useful into one thread just let me know your favourite tip or two. I'm drafting my own top 10 and will share it here as well. (Edit: whoops it's a top 20 already. Now 25.)

My aim here is to publish the info on Creative Bloq late in November, and also collate tips from the community for issues of the upcoming Affinity Review magazine and quick tip videos! We love the involvement you've all had here and can't wait to release more cool stuff to enhance Affinity apps! Thanks, Dale.
