I'm brand new to photo editing (mostly) and to Affinity. When I follow instructions to open a photo, it appears in the lower right corner under the Navigator tab, but never in what I'd call the viewing area. I've exhausted my intuition. I'm trying to open a .jpg. Need some help. I must be missing something very basic. I'm working on a Macbook Pro.

Hi Jim Stewart and Welcome to the Forums,

It should open the image in the middle of the screen.  Could you open and image and take a screenshot of how Affinity looks and attach that here?

This will be a graphics card related issue. Can you post your MacBook Pro specs and what version of macOS you are running please.

Here's the screenshot of what I see after opening a file.

That is a weird one, but I have to ask, why do you have the macro record studio open? On the far left. Just curious is all, I rarely use it and close up once I am done.

Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.6
Affinity Designer 2.5.7 | Affinity Photo 2.5.7 | Affinity Publisher 2.5.7 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

Big_Stan: Yeah, that is exactly what I hoped to see. I have no idea what's going on. That's why I'm here.

Old Bruce: I may have opened the macro studio in my intuitive efforts to solve my dilemma. This all happened (didn't happen, really) the first time I opened Affinity. I've closed it, now.

Hi @Jim Stewart It might be slightly more informative to see a screen grab showing your layers tab instead of the adjustments list.

Probably got the layer turned off.

If that was the case the image would not show in the Navigator Panel

In Preferences under the Performance tab what settings do you have Jim?

Which Operating System are you on, Mojave?

Does the image open in Preview OK

Just for curiosity change View Quality: to Bilinear (Best Quality) then close Preferences, then restart the app and try opening the image.
I doubt it will make much difference but worth a go.
