Jim Stewart Posted February 3, 2019 Posted February 3, 2019 I'm brand new to photo editing (mostly) and to Affinity. When I follow instructions to open a photo, it appears in the lower right corner under the Navigator tab, but never in what I'd call the viewing area. I've exhausted my intuition. I'm trying to open a .jpg. Need some help. I must be missing something very basic. I'm working on a Macbook Pro. Quote
Staff stokerg Posted February 4, 2019 Staff Posted February 4, 2019 Hi Jim Stewart and Welcome to the Forums, It should open the image in the middle of the screen. Could you open and image and take a screenshot of how Affinity looks and attach that here? Quote
Staff TonyB Posted February 4, 2019 Staff Posted February 4, 2019 This will be a graphics card related issue. Can you post your MacBook Pro specs and what version of macOS you are running please. Quote
Jim Stewart Posted February 4, 2019 Author Posted February 4, 2019 Here are the specs for my laptop: MacBook Pro (13-inch, Early 2011) - Technical Specifications.htmlhttp://www.pbs.org/independentlens/films/rumble/#.XEbIMRlPlXw.email Here's the screenshot of what I see after opening a file. The photo shows up in the lower right-hand corner: And it's not exactly what I see, but probably close enough. What I see is the viewing area as black, not white. Quote

Big_Stan Posted February 4, 2019 Posted February 4, 2019 I tried to replicate your screen, I couldn't make it happen. Quote

That is a weird one, but I have to ask, why do you have the macro record studio open? On the far left. Just curious is all, I rarely use it and close up once I am done. I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.
Jim Stewart Posted February 5, 2019 Author Posted February 5, 2019 Big_Stan: Yeah, that is exactly what I hoped to see. I have no idea what's going on. That's why I'm here. Old Bruce: I may have opened the macro studio in my intuitive efforts to solve my dilemma. This all happened (didn't happen, really) the first time I opened Affinity. I've closed it, now. Quote
Jim Stewart Posted February 5, 2019 Author Posted February 5, 2019 Here's a new screen shot with the arrow select chosen. It wants to display the loaded image, but doesn't. (The macro studio is closed.) Quote
JimmyJack Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 Hi @Jim Stewart It might be slightly more informative to see a screen grab showing your layers tab instead of the adjustments list. firstdefence 1 Quote

firstdefence Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 In Preferences under the Performance tab what settings do you have Jim? Which Operating System are you on, Mojave? Jim Stewart Posted February 5, 2019 Author Posted February 5, 2019 I'm sorry, I don't know where the Performance tab is. OS X El Capitan v10.11.6 Yes, the image opens fine in Preview, but recently it has also had difficulty opening in iPhoto. Quote

firstdefence Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 Just for curiosity change View Quality: to Bilinear (Best Quality) then close Preferences, then restart the app and try opening the image. I doubt it will make much difference but worth a go. Jim Stewart Posted February 5, 2019 Author Posted February 5, 2019 Restarted and reopened. Same result: visible in Navigator only. Quote
Big_Stan Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 This is probably a silly question, but did you try to delete the app and then a fresh reinstall Quote
Jim Stewart Posted February 5, 2019 Author Posted February 5, 2019 Big-Stan...No, I haven't tried that. I'll uninstall it and reinstall and will report back. I'll get there sometime today. Quote
