How do I select the transparent background of this image?

I guess my problem is the structure of my layers. I stripped out the case and then duplicated the front right leg to add two more legs in the center (I had to change the design for safety). When I use the magic wand tool it only works on the layer selected and not the group. I want to maintain the separate layers. I have a few more ideas how to do this, but I would like some other opinions before I start experimenting.

CTRL+click on the Group layer icon, that will make an entire selection

Selection > Invert Pixel Selection selects the transparent background

Cmd-click should work the same way on a Mac.

As Psenda says,why ?

 

Because the transparent background does not exist, to change what you see to something else, all you need to do is drop a layer at the bottom of the stack. You could then select that, if you want.

 

If you really want to, look at the Alpha channel in Channels.

 

 

That displays just transparency. You can use that to make a selection of just the transparency or just do what HVDB Fotographie says. That is easier.

I really want to select all of the non-background pixels, the entire cabinet. I thought selecting the background and then inverting would be the easiest way, but no luck so far.

And what operation will follow the selection?

Can not do this by inserting a layer?

Hi, I have figured out a simple way to achieve this:

1. Open the channels panel

2. Right click on Composite Alpha and select "Load to Pixel Selection"

3. Go to select - invert pixel selection

1. Select the three case layers
2. Right click and merge visible Fig 1.
3. You will now have the resultant layer fig 2. and it will be selected.
4. You can now use to the Flood Select Tool  on the resultant layer to select the transparent area in it's entirety around the cabinet and legs.
5. Or just ctrl/cmd + Click on the resultant layer to select the object.

you also still have the original layers to edit and play with if you need to.

I would like to know how to do this

Working with a lightning bolt, have about 7 layers of this, and flood select would take too long and be a worse result

I think I figured out a hack

1. Create a layer of a square underneath
2. Bring the opacity down to 0
3. Merge the layers.
4. Select > Alpha Ranger > Fully Transparent
