Frankentoon Studio
Hello there! Just wanted to share my last work with Affinity Designer. This is part of a series of about 15 characters for a web comic called "We are the Freaks". We're still in the very initial phase of the project. Hope you dig :) as always, all kind of critique would be more than welcome. CartoonMike
Really good stuff there! What I like most is the outline w/ textured (used color w/noise?) colors. Most importantly, is how "unified" the style looks like. I mean there's 3 characters here and although all 3 are different, they all look like that are in the same world (of Style). Very nice use of color, from big shapes to the shading and smaller details. Great work and very dynamic to my eyes. Frankentoon Studio
Hey CartoonMike, thanks a lot for your feedback. I wasn't quite sure to go about with this style for the project, but your comment has encouraging me to dig deep with this initial exploration. Thanks a lot! :D Quote • Frankentoon Studio - Tutorials and Resources for Designer, Photo and Publisher Follow us on Instagram | Follow us on Twitter | Like us on Facebook
CartoonMike
The "real" test in this style, esp. since you mentioned that it'll be a webcomic -- is how does the shapes rotate, that is, how would a ¾ view look like, side view or ¾ back view? Right now the characters are facing front, and the shapes are flat (and that seems to be on purpose), but to tell stories with 'em, imho, they gotta move and interact with the environment. A flat style is a rendering style, so visualize the shapes in 3D and then render the hell out of them in that great flat style of yours. I did a quick attempt, so I know it can be done. I know you can do this, just looking forward to the results. Frankentoon Studio
Yes!, you've nailed my struggle with this style, the challenge is not to lose the 'flatness' and at the same time it needs to look flat (if that makes sense), because that's the charm of it. In my mind it should look like Zelda the Windwaker, sort of… thanks again for your comment. Gonna be posting the updates here :) Cheers! retrograde
Another nice one Insecto. I bet you could do some cool looking side view versions of each of these. For this extreme flat look you might not need 3/4 views (?). Profiles can have tons of expression possibility in their silhouettes. Love the colours! Frankentoon Studio
I bet you could do some cool looking side view versions of each of these… That's an interesting point of view retrograde. I think I need to try both possibilities… for the close up and dialogue parts, shouldn't be a problem to have front and side views only. The action shots on the other hand, would probably need another treatment... Thanks for the feedback, it always makes one think in another direction :) MattP 1 Quote • Frankentoon Studio - Tutorials and Resources for Designer, Photo and Publisher Follow us on Instagram | Follow us on Twitter | Like us on Facebook
