Hi,
is there a way to set up the gutter in a triangular grid? I am trying to design a pattern like the one in the picture, but I am having a hard time aligning everything to the right distance (I did this one by eye).

Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

I could not find a way to use gutter in grid.

A workaround is using divisions, or creating helper objects.

Possibly using Constraints
This is Publisher V1, top is as designed snapped to grid
Bottom is a copy expanded using the group handles

There is no inbuilt gutter with the triangle grid. So drawing your own is the best work around, and doesn't take long...

  1. Use the triangle grid to accurately draw a pair of triangles.
  2. Power duplicate to quickly create a row.
  3. Power duplicate the row to create an array.
  4. Select all.
  5. Use the contour tool to reduce the size of each individual triangle to give the desired gutter.

Save a copy, or make an asset.

Remains editable to resize both the triangles and the gutter.

5. Select all triangles, make sure "Transform Objects Separately" is on, scale one triangle as desired

This was my initial thought, but it is difficult to get this to work, as the Transform center would have to be at the center of the triangle, which is not the center of the triangle's bounding box. As a result you end up with an uneven gutter.

Would Select > Cycle Selection Box (default shortcut: . ) help with that?

Here is a Two Stroke triangle with the strokes set to Erase. One to give the "gutter" the other (the smaller one) set to get rid of the nasty little line which occurs when you align the Big Gutter Stroke to the inside.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.
