Steve_M11 Posted December 2, 2021 Posted December 2, 2021 Is there a way to use the type tool on a path but have the text keep vertical like the picture below? Quote
G13RL Posted December 2, 2021 Posted December 2, 2021 @Steve_M11, unless I am mistaken, there is no automatic way to do this. You can type the letters individually and place them roughly along a line (taking care to place the first and last on the line). Then select all the letters and divide them horizontally and vertically. Quote

I don’t know of a way. 4 minutes ago, G13RL said: You can type the letters individually and place them roughly along a line Instead of typing and positioning them individually, you can type them as a single piece of text, rotate the line of text, increase the tracking to allow room for manoeuvre, convert to curves and then unrotate each curve: 1. Type and rotate the text. 2. Increase the tracking — I used a tracking value of 200‰ here — and then convert to curves and ungroup the resultant group. 3. Select a letter with the Move Tool and double-click its rotation paddle to make it upright. 4. Repeat step 3 for each of the remaining letters. G13RL Posted December 2, 2021 Posted December 2, 2021 @Alfred, , I suggested this solution because it keeps the letters editable, in case the text needs to be changed later (even if it means doing the alignment again). Quote

That’s a fair point, @G13RL, although I would simply keep a copy of the original text as a hidden layer. As a bonus, if you do it this way you don’t even need to select a letter at step 3. Activating the ‘Transform Objects Separately’ option (whether before or after ungrouping) will leave the last/topmost letter selected. ashf Posted December 3, 2021 Posted December 3, 2021 Another workaround is to use inline objects. Even though each character will be separate objects, it's still editable. G13RL 1 Quote

JimmyJack Posted December 3, 2021 Posted December 3, 2021 Shouldn't this be an option in the Character panel?? 🤔 Simple oversight maybe? We have Shear after all... G13RL 1 Quote
ashf Posted December 3, 2021 Posted December 3, 2021 Yes of course. this is one of missing common feature in Affinity's typography. Unfortunately Serif is really procrastinator at adding new feature. Quote

That is what I was trying to do but it all ended up as part of the starting text object, not as children of it. I finally figured out that instead of copying the text object itself I was copying the text inside it. EDIT: but now I can't figure out how to rotate the top level text object (like to -50.7° as in the screenshot) & get each inline character to appear upright. I am trying this in AD on my Mac if that makes any difference. ashf 1 Quote All 3 1.10.8, & all 3 V2.5.7 Mac apps; 2020 iMac 27"; 3.8GHz i7, Radeon Pro 5700, 32GB RAM; macOS 10.15.7 All 3 V2 apps for iPad; 6th Generation iPad 32 GB; Apple Pencil; iPadOS 15.7

Two other methods, both have text with characters separated by breaks + both keep the text editable: A. Convert an empty (!) text frame to curves and paste or type the text. With the node tool you can now move the corners freely. B. Works with a normal text frame. Create an object and activate the tight text wrap for this object. text steps - curve frame or wrap.m4v Quote macOS 10.14.6 | MacBookPro Retina 15" | Eizo 27" | Affinity V1

Select all inline objects in the parent text object by using the Layers panel. Then change the angle on the Transform panel. Before do this, you have to enable "Transform Objects Separately" option by selecting a object that's not text. R C-R 1 Quote

FWIW, it seemed to work OK for me even if I enabled "Transform Objects Separately" after selecting all the child inline text objects. As an aside, since I was doing this in AD, I was a bit surprised that if I clicked on the "Inline in Text" icon on the Layers panel, the Pinning panel opened up. I thought that panel was only available in APub. Sort of a 'bonus' feature?
