As far as I know, Affinity applications are designed to handle large image data/files, that might not fit into standard memories at all.

Affinity Store (MSI/EXE): Affinity Suite (ADe, APh, APu) 2.4.0.2301
Dell OptiPlex 7060, i5-8500 3.00 GHz, 16 GB, Intel UHD Graphics 630, Dell P2417H 1920 x 1080, Windows 11 Pro, Version 23H2, Build 22631.3155.
Dell Latitude E5570, i5-6440HQ 2.60 GHz, 8 GB, Intel HD Graphics 530, 1920 x 1080, Windows 11 Pro, Version 23H2, Build 22631.3155.

Serif does not do that. Minor updates are things like 1.8.0, 1.8.1, 1.8.2.

1.8 compared to 1.7 is a major update, and major updates are where Serif has changed the file format as far as I know.

based on the Wikipedia-Article I referred to, a Version -Jump from 1.7.x to 1.8.x is called a minor update.

you know, why its called graphics workstation?
because of it´s high computing power, it´s tons of RAM and strong GPU-Power to accelerate calculations.

Wikipedia is not always correct. For the Affinity range, 1.8 is considered a major update from 1.7, as 1.7 was from 1.6, etc.

For me a file-format is a format for data at rest, for data-storage - not data-manipulation.
the latter has to be done completely in RAM - that is what RAM is made for: fastest possible data-manipulation.

Virtual memory is an essential feature of all modern operation systems, as is accessing data stored in hundreds of files that could not possibly all fit into physical memory (RAM) at once & leave room for application execution, & several other system level data management techniques, all of which is done to increase overall performance & efficiency.

Yes, each Affinity user has "Workstation" with tons, or two tons RAMs :-)

Back in the day we called those point releases - major and minor have too many missleading connotations.

Yes, versioning is an internal matter of the project, and has no prescribed rules (perhaps recommendations).
For example, in my development tool, they assume this versioning system.

It is evident, that Serif uses a different method with three items (1.8.2), where the first item is a completely new development stage, that will not be covered by the free update,
and the second two items could correspond to a major/minor or major/release.
In any case, this is an internal way of Serif, and our imagined/Googling ideas are completely irrelevant.

I work for a company where, a few years ago, version 11.1.2.4 was seen as a major version, coming from 11.1.2.3. And it was.

Affinity Photo - Affinity Designer - Affinity Publisher | macOS Sonoma (14.2) on 16GB MBP14 2021 with 2.4 versions

It isn't much different, other than for the build version. For all 3 supported operating systems, the first number is always the major version, the second number is always the minor version, & the third one is always the release version.

The build version info depends on the OS & (I think) the store the app came from. For example, for the Mac versions, the 'ShortVersionString' visible in the app's 'About..." window & in Finder's "Get Info' window omits all build info but in the app bundle's Info.plist file there are several alphanumeric string values that include built-related info in an XML format. The iPadOS versions include a single built version number visible in the lower corner of the Preferences screen (like 1.8.2.174 & 1.8.2.4 shown in my sig). I gather the Windows versions display a build number somewhere as well, but since I am not a Windows user I don't know where.

Anyway, what is most relevant to this this topic is the minor version number because there is no built-in application level support in earlier minor versions for opening files created or saved in later ones. It would be very helpful if Serif could somehow let every customer know that but there does not seem to be a foolproof way to do that.

All 3 1.10.8, & all 3 V2.4.1 Mac apps; 2020 iMac 27"; 3.8GHz i7, Radeon Pro 5700, 32GB RAM; macOS 10.15.7
Affinity Photo
1.10.8; Affinity Designer 1.108; & all 3 V2 apps for iPad; 6th Generation iPad 32 GB; Apple Pencil; iPadOS 15.7
