Snap. Going to have to boot into my old Sierra external drive and fire up InDesign for a book project that has footnotes and endnotes. Shocked that this isn't a feature yet.

Agreed.  If endnotes / footnotes are not out by mid 2020 I'll have to revert to inDesign.  My timescale driven by a technical book in preparation.

You are always welcome to ask, but at the moment we do not comment on timelines for unreleased/unannounced new features, sorry. Suffice to say it is not in the current 1.8.0 beta and therefore I do not think it will be in this 1.8.0 release.

Patrick, thank you for a response.

Dare I ask though: what is a ’long’ extension? Is there any sort of rough guestimate as to how long it will take? Years?

Are footnotes and endnotes currently possible (besides manually creating them, of course)? I haven't found them so far.
If not, this is a feature that I think would be widely used. I suspect it may take some time to get right if it is not yet under development, so I would understand if it is not a day-1 feature.

Wow. Nobody else cares about "Optical Margin Alignment"? That's discouraging.

The beta version of Affinity Publisher has no automatic option, the beta of the font alignment does not work as expected and the beta of the manual alignment is too demanding (need of great typographic experience / knowledge for correct results) for many users. Will we get a real/better optical margin alignment in Affinity apps?

I use "Step and Repeat" all the time in InDesign as well. I think this is my number 1 request. Hope that feature shows up. In the mean time, experimenting with align and distribute, but I don't find that nearly as easy.

Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums
A repeat function is a is an oft requested affinity Designer function. I am sure it will turn up in the range eventually.

I find step and repeat vital when creating forms. I cannot find this feature.

Please add an Indesign import feature. This is very important if you want people to migrate from Indesign to Publisher ...

Thanks Chris, I just wanted an estimate. I understand that it's a complicated feature to implement. Appreciate your work.

I can't give any timelines for this (IDML import, not INDD). It's being worked and will be in an update when it is considered working and relatively stable. But I would be talking more than a few weeks in not months, It's not a simple thing to just implement
(edited by Patrick Connor for clarity that this is a statement about IDML and not INDD: 08 July 2019)

Is there any planned timeline for this? Are we talking months, years?

Great to hear, because it will be a pretty important option in my opinion

I consider a step and repeat function essential if Publisher is going to be a replacement for Quark Xpress which I currently use. Step and repeat is essential for forms design.
