Hey everyone! This is my first post here.

In less than a year, Affinity has changed my workflow in ways I couldn't even imagine some time ago. Here it is, my first project developed entirely using Designer.

If you like it, feel free to check it out at Behance and show me some love :-)  https://www.behance.net/gallery/31974255/Panic

Thought I would share a lovely little project I have been working on this last couple of weeks.

Two 30page page educational books for UK charity Epilepsy Action. The story has been adapted for both a Dad and mum version.
To be published in hard form in 2016 also to be released as a digital download sometime before Christmas.

Artwork had to adhere to many readability standards and fonts had to follow NHS guidelines for accessibility.

All illustration was undertaken in Affinity Designer (of course) and page layout in InDesign (let change that soon hey, Serif Devs).

    Notable changes:
    - New Panorama Persona - available from File -> New Panorama.
    - 5 new Photos extensions - Miniaturise, Monochrome, Liquify, Develop and Dehaze - 400% rendering performance improvement in most common situations. - Global colours. - Full support for P3 panels found in the new 5k iMac and 4k iMac. If you have one of these you can try making a new RGB8 document with ProPhoto profile and choosing RGB(255,0,0) or RGB(0,255,0) as the colour of your objects - they should look richer and more vivid than you are used to seeing.
    - View points added to the Navigator. The Navigator has an advanced mode that lets you choose to create and swap between specific view zoom/position saved points.
    - Font fixes. Specifically, a number of font-related crashes have been addressed
    - Export/Import improvements - particularly PDF.
    - Fix for Text tool failing to accept certain characters (those that were mapped to other shortcuts!)
    - Snapping improved for Rotation Centre. Rotation Centre is available from the Move Tool's context toolbar.
    - Pantone/named colour/tint improvements. Selecting an object which has a Pantone colour will automatically choose the tint options in the colour panel.
    - Canvas rotation. The canvas can be rotated by using the touchpad's rotate gesture or by using the View menu items 'Rotate Left', 'Rotate Right' or 'Reset Rotation'.
    - Fix for colour conversion issues exhibited with HSL colours in RGB document formats.
    - Character & Paragraph panel improvements.
    - Typography panel show visually the effects of different OpenType features. Select some text and go to the Typography panel - this will show you the available options for your current font and text selection. Try changing fonts for more options.
    - Printer’s marks and bleed available for output. The export options for PDF now include these additional options, as does the Print dialog.
    - Smart Tap feature. Toggle between the current zoom and 100% by double-tapping with two fingers on the trackpad. This is useful for designing up close and being able to easily refer to a 100% view and then back again.
    - Updated splash screens. These are necessary as we need to include Pantone licensing information.
    - Added Split-toning adjustment. This is available from the Layers panel's adjustments menu and the main Layers->Adjustments menu.
    - Improvements to deform filter - you can now select and manipulate multiple pins at once.

Photoshop's "Save for Web" feature is being phased out in the latest version: it is considered a 'legacy' feature, and will disappear in the next version.

As for the PNG optimization in "Save for Web": it is terrible:
    - no support for alpha transparency and indexed-based coloured PNG
    - no support to reduce the number of colours to 512, or 1024, or an arbitrary number of colours
    - a lack of dithering controls, and misc other PNG options.
    - resultant file PNG file size for assets with alpha transparency is dreadful compared to other (free) tools.
    - in Illustrator the anti-aliasing and downsampling quality is downright useless. Avoid.

In short: photoshop's Save for Web function is the worst option out there for PNG optimization and quality control.

The best alternative for PNG optimization is currently ColorQuantizer (http://x128.ho.ua/color-quantizer.html). Unfortunately, this is unavailable for Macs. An alternative (with almost no control over conversion settings) would be ImagOptim, but it only supports lossless PNG optimization https://imageoptim.com/

Color Quantizer is so good, it is worth running it in a virtual box or Wine environment on your Mac.

I see what you're saying, but from years of digitally painting experience I can say with some confidence that the bulk of the features in those painting-only applications are not necessary for many professional visual development workflows. All that is needed are the features I've listed above, absolutely all of which fit into other compositing and photo editing pipelines as well.

While many painting softwares tout their sophisticated brush and materials dynamics, at the end of the day all you need is a simple default round brush, and Affinity Photo already has more than enough on the brush front. They just need to ad some basic maneuverability UX stuff as mentioned above. I hope they do - I for one like painting and compositing all at once or at least under the same roof.

Exporting in Affinity isn't the same as Photoshop's 'Save for Web' feature. The whole point of 'Save for Web' is to optimise images for the web by removing a lot of useless metadata from the images like camera model, time, white balance, etc. This reduces image file size dramatically making it optimal for a web designers and developers.
Exporting JPEG files with Affinity Photo seems to reduce the file size more than Photoshop's 'Save for Web' feature.

But Photoshop's 'Save for Web' feature reduces a PNG file by roughly 30% more than exporting with Affinity Photo.

It would be great to have a similar feature in Affinity so users can preview the image as they're optimising it and get a similar file size to one that's exported from Photoshop using 'Save for Web'.

I had to read that a few times. No wonder I couldn't figure it out. Thats a bit convoluted to say the least  Theres far too many extra steps that simply aren't required. One would think you select an object, click the eyedropper (needs a shortcut) which brings up the Loupe as your 'cursor', place it where you want and click to set the colour of the selected object. Depending on whether stroke or fill is active it will change the colour respectfully. Much more refined and intuitive is it not?

smallreflection reacted to TonyB in Add a Lighter/Brighter UI-mode (implemented)
Developing two UI modes will slow down the progress of the other features we have promised to include. We have never said we will not do two UI modes but it's all about priorities.

Apple Pro apps are also dark and I guess they also prioritise what they should work on next.

As for "Disability Discrimination Act" then no, as a software developer we do not need to make a 'reasonable' provision, a company buying our software might but then again creative software wouldn't be classed as "required" for a vision impaired user. Also, most software adapted for vision impairment tends to use bright text on a black background.

    Thanks for the feedback.

    sldx,

Hello and welcome to the forums (as I see that you only have a few posts). This has been requested before by some people, myself included. In fact it is the one thing that I sorely miss from Illustrator. You can lock and unlock easily but hiding and showing all is not smooth at all. Lock and unlock can be applied with a shortcut but to unlock an item you have to select it or dig through the layer stack (which wastes time) and it doesn't seem as easy or as fast as Unlock All. If you look through some old posts you will see that there are indeed others who would love to see these features added to Designer but as users we don't know exactly what the developers have in mind, maybe they do have something planned that will be better than Hide/Show all and Lock/Unlock all?

Also, I don't think that we should assume that adding any particular feature is "easy". As a designer I have had many customers tell me that something is easy to do, when in fact it was incredibly difficult or next to impossible. I'm sure the same is true for the programmers. What seems easy to you and me might in fact be really tough to do. Don't get me wrong, I too am hoping that Hide/Show All and Lock/Unlock All makes it into a future release or that they come up with something that works better (you are right, the current methods for hiding and unlocking pales in comparison) but until that time, we will make do. Designer is a great program and it keeps getting better and better all the time. There are so many things that Designer gets right and I'm sure that they will work this out too. So be patient and have faith in the Affinity team.

(later edit: sorry for the bitchy title  )

I know there's been a few threads requesting either unlock all or hideObject/unhideAll, but I'm so frustrated that I created an account just to post this.
I think AD is pretty awesome, the transition was almost flawless except this. Not even sure how some people can handle it in the current state, I know I'm struggling.
If I want to unhide something, I have to dig through countless layers and hope to not spend the next half hour scrolling, looking for a missing checkmark. It's silly, really silly.

I know some people are fine with layer hunting, but in my experience they are always slower, for obvious reasons.

I suppose AD is trying to change this lock/hide paradigm, but there is nothing to replace it with. Because there is no option to automatically focus the current object in the layer palette either (I know about the right click, but it's a laughable workaround). And there's no way to unhide an object or all objects without frustrating layer hunting.

So can we please have shortcuts for lock/unlock all & hide/show all, at least till you figure out something better? A script, a plugin, anything.

Thanks guys, and keep up the awesome work.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Later edit since Matt confirmed it's coming :)

My usual workflow is something like this:
I usually keep stuff grouped and use Isolation mode a lot (dbl-click on a group). I do my thing laying out whatever I'm working on, hiding stuff in the process. So, UnhideAll will usually unhide a few groups that are easy to hide again (click, click click, Hide, or just deselect whatever I wanted to unhide, and then hide the rest, because they remain selected. see below for details). When it gets too messy I either clean up old stuff or just move it to a backup layer. It also takes care of cleanup when sending files (just delete the backup layer).

There are a few important aspects to Unhide/Unlock All to help keep your sanity:
    - Root layers are not affected by unhide/unlock all. If they were, it'd be a headache.
    - Whatever is unlocked/unhidden becomes selected. So, SO helpful for moving it around and lots of other tricks.
    - Objects that are in a Hidden or Locked layer are not affected. Just your "work" stuff. So if you separate your layout on regions of interest on layers, one unhide/unlock all is not gonna mess your scene.

I believe this is one of those things that weren't implemented yet due to time constraints.
I would expect it to work as you describe and I know the Export Persona will receive some improvements later to include previews, so It's probably a question of time until this gets addressed too.

Hi Chris, thanks for the tip. Double-checking my system system preferences shows that I did have a dark grey custom highlight selected. I switched it to another color and it looks like Designer uses whatever highlight color is selected in the preferences. A funny thing too is that the highlight in Affinity Photo used to be the default blue color before but now that I've changed the preference it is also matching that color now.

Thanks for helping me figure this out. Love the software and if you're ever looking for contract OS X developers I would love to help.
