I still have an issue when trying to reopen a file I've closed. It's the same whether I drag to app, go "Open Recent" or just Open and navigate to the file. I get this:

And then I get something like this, no matter which option above I choose:

The only way forward from there is to quit the Beta and reopen it.

Can someone please weigh in on this? It's been like this for the last three betas.

In Draw persona, if I finish my design and go to File/Export, I get troubles with the Export settings. The buttons Cancel, More and Export sometimes do not work. I have to click back and forth between formats, and suddenly More works, but then if i close it and try to reopen, it does not work.

Also my customs setting for PDF printing were erased from the list of options in Export.

I know you will fix this. Thank you very much in advanced.

Excellent. :) I know this is an additional thing, but any chance a pattern fill option might squeeze in as well?

PLEASE BE AWARE - If you have not already run Beta 9, this version will reset all your settings. If you have already run Beta 9 then it will not. Please make sure that if you have created any palettes, styles, assets, brushes, etc in the current beta that you export them in the current version first BEFORE installing this beta otherwise you will lose them. This was unfortunately necessary for the Beta 9 build and should hopefully not be required again.

This is a beta of a substantial change to our codebase and as much as we have tried to ensure the quality of the code, it should be considered to be not suitable for production use. This means that you should not attempt to use it for commercial purposes or for any other activity that you may be adversely affected by the application failing. In addition it is definitely worth noting that files created in Affinity 1.5 cannot be opened in 1.4 so always make a copy of your important documents before opening them in 1.5 to ensure you do not accidentally overwrite them and are unable to open them in your 1.4 version.

To use this beta, simply download the file from the link given above and double-click on the file to open the installer. Follow the instructions to install the beta version. The beta sits alongside the Mac App Store version and will not interfere with it.

    Fixes/Improvements:
Fix for Assets not snapping on the document as they are dragged out of the Assets panel Fix for measurements not working on documents with Artboards Fix for measurements stopping users from being able to resize about center in the Move Tool Fix for boolean geometry operations failing on many trivial cases Fix for incorrect cursors in Shape tools Fix for Zoom Tool not zooming about the point you dragged from! Fix for Assets with non-RGB8 data drawing strangely in the Assets panel Fixed 'Print Ready' documents accidentally defaulting to Grey/16 colour format Fix for Artboards with constraints applied causing mayhem Added ability to drag Opacity label in layers panel to change its value 'New from Clipboard' now sets the new document to dirty so it prompts on closing Use DPI information from placed images/embedded documents to place them at their correct physical size Miscellaneous other small fixes

I love the way you implemented, keeping it separate from opacity.

    I'm experiencing the same issue.
Also sometimes (randomly) the editor goes nuts when I modify an existing brush, it seems not able to perform a new nozzle addition: preview is correct, but stroke is the "older" one.
I noticed that the Fill Layer is broken too.

    That's all so far...  :)

    Hi csp,

Please understand that this is the first beta of 1.5 - not everything we intend to achieve in this beta is done yet. Some of the points you raise certainly will get done for 1.5 - although some will not.

We must balance our time very carefully between adding new features (yes - in essence marketing - lots of people have not bought Photo yet because it does not have the features we are trying to add) but we do aim to improve other parts of the app for existing users. Usually, a beta starts with "features", then "improvements", then "bug fixes" - in that order..

Don't get downhearted because the fixes you need are not in the first beta - we have plenty of time :)

    Hope this helps,

With all that said, here is a list of all the new things we can do with 1.5. This will be a fairly short beta (approx. 6 weeks) and things will likely be bad / broken for the the first week or two. After that, we expect the beta to become more stable and usable.

Please understand that all betas must start somewhere - and that they are beta for a reason!

Thanks once again for taking the time to download and use our beta :) - here's the list:

    Focus Merge Support
Focus merging allows you to generate a detailed composite image from a number of images focussed at differing lengths. Use File -> New Focus Merge to get started.   HDR Merge Support   HDR merging lets you create a deep, unbounded 32-bit image from a number of exposure bracketed source images. Use File -> New HDR Merge to get started.   New 32bit RGB Editing Mode   Photo now offers a full compositing / editing environment for 32bit unbounded images. It correctly deals with 0-alpha cases (as per the OpenEXR spec) and generally operates in linear space.   Known Issues: Whilst most filters will work out of the box, we still have significant work to do to make all adjustments / blend modes work correctly in 32bit. Don't be surprised if you get weird result sometimes.   Known Issues: Our renderer will seem very slow when dealing with 32bit documents - it's because we are (at the moment) falling back to CPU where we should be able to use the GPU. This will get faster soon :)   Tone Mapping Persona   Full tone mapping Persona for both HDR and LDR images. This is obviously best used with an image merged by HDR merge - although you can use it on any image.   Known Issues: The UI still requires refinement and eventually there may be more sliders!   OpenEXR / HDR (Radiance) Import / Export   Photo can now import and export .hdr (Radiance, RGBE) and .exr (OpenEXR) images.   Known Issues: We know that people need lots of export options - mainly for OpenEXR - these will drop in in the next few weeks.   Macros   Using the View -> Studio -> Macro and View -> Studio -> Library menu items, you can access new panels which will allow you to record actions, save them, then play them back later. You can also store them in a handy gallery which will offer you live previews of what each stored macro would do to your document if you applied it.   Known Issues: You will find that you can not record some actions which seem natural / obvious (eg. selecting layers). This will be fixed soon.   Batch Processing   Using File -> New Batch job, you can queue up processing on a large number of files. You can resize, convert format and apply any number of macros to each file. The batch processing happens in the background - so you can continue working whilst the jobs are processed.   Live Projections   Photo 1.5 contains a new mechanism which allows you to edit an image in different spatial domains - we currently support the “Equirectangular” domain (360 pano - Ricoh Theta, etc.). You can use all tools when editing - and you can convert back once you have edited. This is especially useful for cleaning up stitching artefacts, or artefacts at the zenith / nadir of the image. Use the options in Layer -> Live Projection to get started.   Known Issues: Perspective projection is disabled. Will be introduced soon.   Improved Pixel Tool   The pixel tool is improved in 1.5 - you can hold shift when dragging to constrain the direction of painting (sorry we did not get this working sooner!). You can also select what happens when you hold Alt and drag - erase to transparent, erase to background colour, or erase to whatever the nominated snapshot / history location is (like in the Clone tool).   New “Pixel Art” Document Resizing   Photo now contains an alternative way to resize a document - using well known pixel-art resampling algorithms. If you work with pixel art and want to use this feature, it’s located under the Document menu.   Known Issues: This can crash if your document is huge - we will fix this.   New “Accumulation” Brush Dynamics   Many users have asked for “Opacity Jitter”. For us, opacity is a constant thing and will remain constant. However, we have added a new property to brushes - “Accumulation” - which should allow you to get what you need :) Please let us know how this works out for you..   Text Styles   Affinity Photo now has the same Text Styles support as Designer - it’s all shared code so it should work right out of the box :) Let us know if you find anything odd about it.   New Marquee Modes (Polygonal, Magnetic) [NOT AVAILABLE YET]   We are committed to adding these modes in 1.5. There are already icons / modes for them in the context toolbar of the Freehand Marquee tool. At the moment, it won’t let you enter these modes - but it will in a subsequent beta build :)   Even more RAW cameras supported   We have upgraded our RAW support again! I’m sorry I can’t give a full list of supported hardware right now, but I aim to do so tomorrow :)   Improved Metadata Mining   Our detection of RAW / JPEG / etc. metadata has been upgraded - after reports of certain lenses not being properly recognised - hopefully this update will fix the missing ones, but if not, please let us know!   Massive Improvements to Export Persona   Our Export Persona has seen huge upgrades in this cycle - you now have total control of exactly what resolution sets get exported. You can also use our handy batch export builders to quickly generate content for external consumption - ie. Xcode .assets - even Spline compatible metadata can be generated!   Layered TIFF Interop   Users have constantly asked us to support “Layered TIFF”. Layered TIFF is not a thing. TIFF with embedded data is a thing - and I’m happy to report that we now import embedded PSD / Affinity data and can write TIFF with embedded Affinity data.   Halftone Filter   We have a marvellous new halftone pattern filter in 1.5 - it can approximate monochrome, colour, circular and line halftones and can even be applied as a “Live Filter”.   Known Issues: This filter can be a bit funky in "Live Filter" mode - and if you have a retina screen, you will see some jittering even in non-live.   Dust & Scratches Filter   Many user have asked us for a “Dust & Scratches” filter - so we have made one. It’s extremely useful for removing sporadic small defects in images. Please let us know if it works for you.   Layer Linking [NOT IMPLEMENTED YET]   Layer linking will happen in 1.5 - at the moment it is currently not exposed in this beta. Look out for it soon though - it should set the benchmark for how linked layers should work in a raster editor.. More on this soon!   “Edit in Affinity Photo” Photos extension   This is something which we didn’t think we could do - a Photos extension for Mac OS 10.9 and above which simply allows you to use the full Photo app to edit your images - and stores the changes you have made as a layered document.   New Colour Picker Tool   After literally thousands of requests, we have implemented a dedicated picker tool for colours. It requires little explanation - so let us know if it works for you :)   New Clone Sources Panel   We now have a new studio panel which allows you to store up an unlimited number of global sources for the Clone / Healing brush - it even works across multiple documents.   Direct PSD Write-Back   One of the most requested features - direct write-back to PSD. A number of 3rd party DAM applications will happily deal in PSD - but until now, Photo required you to File -> Export for PSD. No longer! You can now just hit File -> Save! You will need to turn this on - in File -> Preferences - please read the warning there carefully!   No Thumbnails Option   This is more a Designer feature, but I promised it some time ago so here it is - you can choose (in Preferences) not to write out a thumbnail with your documents. This has the advantage of making your documents use less space - but obviously you won’t get Finder thumbnails, etc.   Improved Vectorscope   Our old HSL vectorscope is no more - replaced by a vastly more appropriate Rec.709 YUV scope with an improved graticule :)   Improved Photoshop Plugin Support   We have found a significant bug with our plugin code - it has been fixed :) That said - please don’t expect all your plugins to now work. This fix primarily puts us in a position to work properly with plugin makers to move forward. That said, some plugins will now spring into life - “Focus Magic” being a notable example.   Multi-monitor Colour Profile Support   Sorry it took so long to get this fixed - we now can profile different on different monitors.   Adjustment Performance Improvements   Found and fixed a simple issue which made changing adjustment parameters appear to be slow. Fixed.   This update also includes literally hundreds of fixes and small improvements, some of which are listed below:   - User control over two pass rendering on Retina devices. - PSD import / export improvements. - PDF import / export improvements. - Snapping improvements - candidate-free snapping, gaps-and-spans (Alt key in Move Tool), so much more!   - Performance and stability improvements for macOS Sierra.   Thanks again for taking the time to use this beta!   Affinity Photo Team

SVG export of relative coordinates uses a relative move for subpaths SVG import of <a> tags implemented Many text style bug fixes and tweaks PDF export improvements Asset panel UI improvements when interacting with it Fixed hex colour input not working as expected for the 'b' slider Fixed line properties flyout showing incorrectly rounded width in some circumstances Page Up/Down/Home/End should appear correctly as customisable shortcuts now Updated icon and cursor for Artboard Tool Slice Tool can now nudge with arrow keys, Slices now work correctly with document snapshots Added 'Space Horizontally' and 'Space Vertically' alignment options to complement the 'Distribute' variants Miscellaneous other small fixes

    Fixes/Improvements:
Fix for macOS Sierra display issues Fix for pasting text from the clipboard New 'Accumulation' dynamic for pixel brushes - take note Paolo Limoncelli! (this is the same as Opacity variance in other editors) Fix for moving an item into a symbol with syncing turned off actually syncing to all instances when it shouldn't Added new 'Create palette from Image' option to the Swatches panel's menu. This allows you to specify a source image and how many colours you would like and their destination palette. Fix for deleting the first/last node of a curve inadvertently causing the shape to change Pen Tool now shows the nodes of the current selection smaller when you start to draw a new curve out, to signify the new state you are entering Added EXR and HDR import/export formats Pressing Escape during guide creation or object transforming now cancels correctly Creating assets with constraints should now function predictably if you dragged the item into the Assets panel (its position was wrong, previously) Fix export of vector stroke brushes to vector formats Fix for Undo/Redo of artboard positioning when used from the History panel Fix for marching ants incorrect behaviour when zoomed in past 100% in Pixel view mode Assets will warn when they are used if they contain fonts the user does not have installed. Solo mode now remains in force when doing simple things to the object (changing its curves, adjusting its fill nodes, etc) Text Styles now allow the user to 'update' any style from the current selection, not just the current style. Fix for NFS issues and some file writing problems Miscellaneous Symbol and Asset fixes Fix for transforming a multi-selection of objects always causing the tool's box to be re-normalised after each drag incorrectly Retina rendering mode in Preferences now works properly - allows for 2-pass retina, 1-pass standard or 1-pass retina rendering. This is actually really useful for Astropad users as forcing it to either of the 1-pass options makes Astropad appear to show less artefacts in its draw

smallreflection reacted to MattP in What to do with such Designer import?
    Hi bodich,

I mean this is the best possible way: Please calm down.

Firstly, when was the last time one of the developers or project managers of any of your favourite Adobe software ever bothered to reply to you on a topic you wanted to discuss - and was it on a Sunday evening in their own time? I'm not saying the team here are spectacular, deserving of grand praise or anything insane, but I am saying that we actually care and are trying our best so try to take that as a sign that things will get better in time.

So, I had a look at your first eps - and I can tell you exactly why Illustrator appears to get that file oh-so-right - it's because the file you're looking at was authored in Illustrator and was output as a 'Illustrator EPS' file... Now that sounds innocent enough, but what it actually means is that the file you're looking at has two representations in it - an EPS file that has wonky padding around it, strange document structure and no specification of whether it was meant to be in RGB or CMYK, and it also contains a pure, native Illustrator file which is correct and perfect. Illustrator obviously opens the Illustrator file that's embedded in that EPS - whereas we cannot, we open the EPS - and that's the sole reason you get these 'huge problems'. The problem is actually that you're comparing apples and oranges - Illustrator looks grand because it's not displaying the same file you're actually asking to open in Designer...

Yes, we guessed incorrectly that it was CMYK - but that's because there were a number of CMYK colours inside it, so we assumed the author probably had a CMYK document, but they didn't. The format conversion/assigning could be more obvious in Designer, I completely agree with you there.

Next terrible problem: Hairlines visible on objects which have shared geometry... Yes, you're right these lines exist - they're a rendering artefact caused by any rasterisation engine that doesn't use constructive solid geometry - i.e. anything which basically isn't Adobe Flash - but then, Adobe Flash had its own set of issues... Now, you probably are going to be surprised when I said it's present in all other rasterisers and I can assure you that it's always there, it's just that some engines do little tricks to hide it from you... Here's a zoomed-in screenshot of Illustrator (current version) showing that same file - hairlines and all:

So you can probably see these artefacts more clearly in Designer - that's down to the antialiasing ramp we chose because it gives drawings a nicer feel. You can select all the objects and go to the Blend Options dialog (the little cog at the top right of the Layers Panel) and adjust the blend gamma and/or antialiasing ramps. You can't do that in Adobe's software either.

The best solutions are always to construct documents yourself - that mouth is designed in a really strange way - why have all those pieces as geometry that butts up against itself rather than a black background with overlaying elements? Anyway, that's by the by...

All I'm trying to say is to take it easy on us - and the other forum users who have bent over backwards to try to help. So far, you've come across very angry, and I appreciate that if you're frustrated or in need of help that can make people angry - everyone has been there, but approach things from the point of view that maybe we aren't all fools and potentially the things you think you're seeing aren't always as black and white as they might at first appear to be. We genuinely just want you to be happy and enjoy designing. If there's a problem, ask nicely and people will flock to help. If there's a fault, tell us and we'll fix it as soon as possible :)

    Thanks again,
    Matt

Hi bodich, you shouldn’t probably post licensed artwork on this forum (if that is the case here) …  ;)

What regards your color problems, you can go ahead and do the following:
After opening your document in Affinity Designer, go to File > Document Setup …, and open the Colour tab. Click Assign. Select your desired profile, for instance, RGB/8 and sRGB IEC61966-2.1. Click OK. This will get you the true 80ties look as shown on the Shutterstock page where you downloaded the image.

Interesting—I had just activated about 72 different fonts from the Tolyer family and instantly received a crash, but did this update and (fingers crossed) so far it's working!

Edit: cancel that. I quit, restarted, and now it's failing on each open again.  Then I deactivated the entire Tolyer family, and now it seems to work. Very strange.

    Thanks,
    Matt
