Tone got a reaction from cbarista in Official Affinity Designer V1 (Desktop) Tutorials
I know I'm a bit late to this thread (sorry, I don't come here much) but...I wouldn't say they are tutorials as such, more, video help files.
I have purchased all three Affinity books, awaiting the arrival of publisher, but I have only read the two I have...once. I brought them more to support Affinity, but they're there if I need them, but, truth be told, I would rather watch a tutorial video, and one that is teaching me how to do a design from start to finish using the tools required, they're inspirational as well as helpful. Sadly I struggle to find good, easy to follow designer videos like that. I know Affinity does do some on it's creative youtube channel but they're not really what I want. I don't find them very helpful, although interesting to watch. There are a tonne of really good Affinity photo tutorials on youtube that do just that but not for designer. I know you can find some Designer tutorials on this forum, but crawling through the forum to find them is slow, and using the search function on here to help find them, doesn't! It's a shame that there aren't separate sub-forums for each app, especially now there's publisher.
It would be good if there was a list on here of the top voted tutorials the forum has, or, one's found on youtube, that would be a great help. I've had Affinity photo and designer for ages, recently brought publisher, I brought them for fun, but have only, since lockdown, really started to unleash the power they have, and they have a lot, you just have to discover it, which is time consuming. Oh! And if you buy brushes from the affinity store, make sure you find the extras, like the styles and assets that can come with them! I've brought nearly everything the store has to offer over time, and only recently discovered the extras!! (slapped forehead).
I know the Affinity forum is more for feedback on the apps and about bugs found, the tutorials and post your pictures sub forums are...um...just add ons, which is a shame but there it is...
If you been able to get to this point, I can mumble on! Here (below) are about the best designer youtube channels I've found after many hours of searching and watching. I hope they help and inspire you. As, if like me you brought the affinity suite for fun and amusement I know how frustrating it can be trying to find the power under the bonnet. Don't give up, I did! But now I've tried again and now I've discovered what the apps have, and I'm now enjoying them, they're no longer toys left in the playbox.
I like this channel the best. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUzuRWH5tnmt-OEOByR8S-g
This channel is a bit messy, but the designer tut videos are there and worth watching. https://www.youtube.com/c/RoryTownsendTV/videos
I'm not really a fan of this channel, no talking! But there are some really good tuts. https://www.youtube.com/c/DesignArtStudio/videos
Hope this post has been of help. Unless of course the mods have deleted it for being too long, then it won't be!!

Personally I agree that tutorials without dialogue and just music are quite difficult to follow.  So I don't watch those or subscribe to those channels.  There are plenty of non-native speakers whose dialogue is quite helpful and whose videos are very instructive.  You don't need to speak perfect English, you just need to communicate good/helpful information.  -=Rick

I brought photo and designer about four years back. I played about with photo but hardly used designer, I don't use them for professional use. Anyhow! With all the free time I/we now have, I brought the Affinity workbook for designer and I started watching youtube tuts on designer too, as the lockdown started, and decided, after watching about a 101 of them, to give it a go. I've created logos and such like with it, but with what I've learned I thought I'd have a go at artwork, and below is what I've come up with. I also used my recently acquired Blast and Xenon brushes. I thought the picture was okay for my first attempt, even if it took me sixteen hours 😶.
I now have a new hobby. So thanks Affinity 👍for making such a great piece of software. I recently brought publisher...maybe in about four years I'll get around to using that too. I will also be making more use of the forum and other Affinity hang outs, like the affinity youtube channel, as I try to improve.

    Hello all. Newbie here.

Ive found most of the help I need so far from google and youtube but I can't find something so simple, how to paste HTML colours into....well, there isn't anywhere to paste to!

In Gimp, I could highlight the text I wanted to change the colour of and get a dialog box up, in this it had another box with the colour code in use, I could then delete that code and enter the html colour I wanted to use. But I can't find how to do it in Affinity. I can find the sliders but when I enter #34495e (without the hash) nothing happens.
I have tried to find the answer but alas, so here I am ☺️

Sorry to ask such a question but thanks in advance for any help, links or advise you can give.

    Hello all

I didn't want to get married to a certain other photo/designer program and pay for it for the rest of my life, luckily I found Affinity who had no marriage intentions and so it was a no brainer.
I've got designer for the serious stuff, designing logos, etc and also have photo to mix and match with designer but photo for me is also for fun, I like to have fun with pictures.
Anyhow, thanks for being there Affinity and thanks for having such a great forum to complement your product..... :D

Tone got a reaction from MJSfoto1956 in Update to Photo.
Having brought Photo and then designer I was happy their file types worked together but then I updated designer and that ended that!

I updated designer back on the 6th of October and found I had a problem with file support so I posted a question - File type not supported - see here https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/25938-file-type-not-supported/ and found out it was because of the update to designer. Since then I have checked for the update everyday.

As you can see in that post I was firstly told the update to correct the problem was a few days away, then that quickly changed to, there will be an update soon, and, shouldn't take too long, but here I am a month later still waiting...

Yes, I was told I could install betas of both the apps but I don't want to use betas & so I said I'd wait for the update, not relizing it would be so long.

    My questions to the staff....
Why issue an update that makes the apps incompatible?
Why wasn't a warning given that updating to the latest version will make the apps incompatible?
Why has a fix been so long in coming when, as far as I can see, being able to use both together is paramount?

I use Designer for serious things like logos and I use Photo for fun only, the only tool in photo I use with designer is the perspective tool and I have to wonder why such a great tool, which is perfect for using on things like logos, isn't in the designer package, it seems to me at least, the perspective tool is all designer needs to be the perfect app.

At the moment I am holding back from rating and writing a review about both apps because as you can see I am a little frustrated about the currant predicament.

I think both apps are great and would recommend to a friend, there are lots of tutorials for both apps to help me progress and this forum is top notch for the help and questions that need answering but this update and incompatibility issue has left a sour taste.

Apologies to readers for turning what was going to be a simple question into a rant & so I best ask the question.....When is an update to Photo coming?

As much as I appreciate an update I won't make the same mistake again and in future I will wait until both compatible updates are in place. I do hope the update isn't more than a few days.
I wish I had known as I would have waited for both updates to be ready at the same time because any benefit from an update, in my case, wasn't a benefit at all.
