If I tick the "Portrait" box any future documents default to - portrait. I anticipated image placement (link/embed) to work in the same way - if I set it to "linked" then the next document will open "linked" It came as a surprise when that didn't happen; after all we expect it to be available for text styles (and other parameters I can't think of at the moment!)
I am asking the developers if the feature could be incorporated.

I love icons and I love toolbars and much prefer them to keyboard combinations I used to using the undo and redo icons, also  the full page and page width ones. Hopefully I will eventually be able to make my own toolbars as I can currently from the large selection of icons in PP.

I, too, prefer icons, especially for things like save, save as, undo, copy, cut, paste, etc. I constantly have to resort to the menus which drives me batty. It's time consuming. Please consider adding the ability to choose icons rather than trying to find and remember shortcut keys. The lack of icons that I can use in the older Serif products is what keeps me using them rather than switching over completely to the Affinity programs. It's like the designers of the Affinity apps have gone out of their way to make things more difficult for those of us who prefer clicking an icon to perform a task. I hope you will seriously consider giving us back the icons that are missing.

You would have needed to Revert the settings and then create a new file to test my theory. But it sounds like Old Bruce has confirmed it. That's a terrible default, and perhaps a bug in its own right.
Edit: But I do like your idea of Edit Text Wraps overriding it automatically.

Only just found this forum from Windows Beta. Making the most of it and clearing a backlog! :)

I know (from Beta posts) that it's seen as a Publisher feature - all I can say is that in 20 years I've needed it as much in Graphics documents (CorelDraw) as in DTP (InDesign).

is there (in aff designer) an option to minimize the studio panel tools to single icons as its implemented in PS? I work often on my 15" inch laptop with fullhd and i have lack of place here because the studio has its own minimal width and cannot be minimized. Viewport is much better in PS thanks this and i will appreciate this feature in designer too, because i actually replaced PS by your sexy software :) Thanks.

Wouldn't it be nice if they could though  :)  :)  :) Congratulations to everyone for all the latest fixes - they all work for me !!!

First impressions: I installed Affinity Beta 2 days ago. I have problems with Edit>Preferences>. 1) I can not get the language to stay as English (United Kingdom) yes I read where it said it required a restart. I followed this edict and tried several times. It still opens up set to the US version.
2) I find the very dark background difficult to use and wanted to lighten the UI but non of the sliders produced any observable changes. I did try some of the other preferences but did not find anything noticeable either. Is this a fault or was my copy corrupted while downloading.
(3) Effects- 3D does not produce a sufficiently deep effect, it only rounds the edges of a quick shape or Circle.  Previous Page  & Draw models completely domed these objects and that is important.
(4) some of the video tutorials do not have commentary - personally I have no idea what is going on in them and so find them useless. There is also a deficit of ‘basic, introductory get stated offerings , they all assume that you know basic stuff already.

Other observations: (1) I have used Adobe Illustrator for a number of projects. I have also used In Design and of course Photoshop. These products have always been over priced and over complicated, user unfriendly and un-intuitive.  Yes they were feature rich and the professional market endorsed them for whatever reason. But even though I was using them for serious commercial projects, I personally hated using them. So basing the UI so closely on the Adobe model disappoints me immensely, I was hoping for something more user-friendly like the original Serf Draw and Page models. Surely you can incorporate an ‘undo’ icon, and a window of page size icons instead of that intimidating set up window that seems to be the only way to open a new document.  (2) I am not a fan of keyboard shortcuts. Its all very “nerdy” to have learned all those “arcane symbols” I’m sure, but personally I find it quicker and more efficient to whisk the mouse cursor up to an Icon on the toolbars or use a drop down menu. (3) It seems Apple users have taken to Affinity with some enthusiasm. But then, as I understand it, they never had the joy of using the original user friendly and intuitive Serif Page and Draw software and only have the Adobe and other so called high end alternatives to compare with. Windows users will have a different perspective. I will continue to add comments as I gain more experience.

I’m so excited to finally be playing with the Windows version! Well done, and thank you.
 
Some observations, queries, and suggestions based on my first experiences:
I have my Windows taskbar set to auto-hide, and it’s not accessible when I’m in AD. I can press the Windows key to bring it up, but it would be nice to be able to move the cursor down to the bottom of the screen to access it, like I can from most apps. It would be nice to be able to tab between input fields, in dialogues and in palettes in the studio. I like to use keyboard shortcuts as much as possible, but it feels slow and clunky to have to manually click in each field to enter a new CMYK colour, for example, instead of tabbing between them. Esc doesn’t work across dialogues as I would expect it to. For example, if I bring up the preferences, I have to click “Close” to make it go away. Likewise for layer effects. Again this interrupts my keyboard shortcut flow. Also with layer effects, it would also be nice to have a single Cancel option. Sometimes I like to fiddle and play with effects to see how they look, but then decide to cancel. As far as I can tell, I need to remove each effect I’ve added. Perhaps this is just a different approach that I will grow to like once I’m used to it. Are there ways to create presets for new documents, PDF export, etc? That would be very useful for me. What about viewing colour separations? It’s essential for my work. I’ve found working with text to be extremely buggy. AD has crashed more than ten times on me just doing basic text operations like changing fonts, font size, leading, escaping the text frame, etc. I will create another thread as soon as I can pin it down and be a bit more specific about the steps that lead to crashes, but for now it seems like there are a lot of issues with text, and many things have triggered the crashes. Also, relating to text:
Ctrl + Shift + > makes the text bigger, as I am used to in InDesign and Illustrator, but only one step for each press. It would be nice to be able to press and hold it to scale a large amount quickly. Or is there another way to do this? No warning for overset text? Is it possible to flow text between frames? Filler text isn’t selectable, except as a whole block. It would be useful to be able to edit it directly, as if I had typed it. A few times certain characters wouldn’t appear when I typed them, but others would. An invisible space would appear, so I could continue typing afterwards, and clear the missing character, but still not type it. This seemed inconsistent and irregular, but was consistent for certain characters within a frame in a session. It was usually followed by a crash. If “Check Spelling While Typing” is checked, everything I type is marked with the red squiggly line. When I restart AD after a crash it usually (but not always) says that it has been restarted after a serious error, and asks if I would like to send the error report. I always choose Yes, but then don’t see anything else about it. Does it send in the background, or should it be obvious that it is sending?
 
Any other suggested best practices for error reporting, or tracking steps that cause crashes? Obviously it’s helpful if we can list steps to recreate a crash, but anything else? Any way to automatically track and save a history?
 
Aside from the above problems I’m excited. It seems fast and has lots of useful features that I look forward to exploring more thoroughly. I look forward to a time when it’s stable and I can really start relying on it in my day-to-day workflow. Thanks for all your hard work, and the chance to give it a spin for free!
