I need to have straight single quotes, but they get changed to curly quote. I went into preferences and turned off the "change to quote to typographical quote" and that works for a double quote, but single quotes are still curly.

Same here, this is with Publisher by the way. We need these in the find and replace dropdown menus in along with En Dash, Em Dash etc.

Even weirder is trying to find a single "Quote", opening or closing, by typing an apostrophe into the find and replace Find text box. Can't figure out how to do that. I'll wager that it may have something to do with language settings.

I've noticed that, too. I'm not sure anyone has reported that as a bug.

The only workaround is to hit Ctrl+Z immediately after typing a ' which will "undo" the auto-correction.

I wonder if this might not involve a system level override being provided/applied by macOS itself?'

I doubt it, as it also happens on Windows :)

Yeah, the "APOSTROPHE" (U+0027) character gets mangled. Even when inserting it directly via the Mac OS X "Character Viewer" thingy.

(Copy'n'paste from a different application, e.g. TextMate in my case, seems to work at least. Else some code examples pasted into publisher would mess up majorly. :D )

It also happens with left and right single quotes.

Can you please confirm the fonts that your are using when this occurs.

As far as I can see, the font used doesn't matter. Apostrophes and right/left single quotes are always curly/typographic. Double quotes obey the auto-correct preference. I haven't found a font yet where the apostrophes and single quotes obey the preference.

I probably missed it but I have yet to find a font with a straight single quote glyph, making me wonder what glyph appears when using the CMD/CTRL+Z 'undo' workaround you mentioned in an earlier post. Just about every font has a straight double-quote glyph, but not a straight single quote one.

A straight apostrophe is (used as) a straight single quote.

Well, this is weird. When I checked this in Publisher last Friday, the undo workaround was showing a glyph that looked very similar to but was not quite the same as the apostrophe in any of the fonts I checked. This was only obvious at very large point sizes & high zoom levels. It varied by font: in some it was just a vertical rectangle the same height as an apostrophe; in others it was blocky with one straight side, sort of like a comma or reversed comma elevated to the cap height.

But today, I can't duplicate any of that. AFAIK, the only thing that changed was I had quit Publisher on Saturday or Sunday & did not open it again until today. :S
