MikeW Posted February 9, 2018 Posted February 9, 2018 Here's the template as a PDF. They also had the layer named -DO NOT TOUCH-Template visible but not printable, so you may wish to set it back once in AD. As regards CS6--this is something Adobe did back around CS6, make AI files non-openable in older versions. Part of the "you have to subscribe" thing. They suck. I also stopped at CS6. I opened the AI file in CorelDraw... Mike 3.5X2-SMART-V2.pdf Willy Pimentel and Mithferion 2 Quote
Mithferion Posted February 9, 2018 Posted February 9, 2018 That was my guess: stopping backward compatibility just to have more people under their subscription model. Best regards! Willy Pimentel Posted February 9, 2018 Author Posted February 9, 2018 well, this brings me to the next question: How do i make layers selectable as Template in the design persona? Quote Willy PimentelM1 Imac 16gb Mac os Ventura Latest
MikeW Posted February 9, 2018 Posted February 9, 2018 OK. I am attaching two AD versions. 3.5X2-SMART-V2.afdesign = the same type of template, laid out the same, with the appropriate layers locked. Work on Layer 1. Turn off being able to view the layer named -DO NOT TOUCH-Template before exporting to PDF. I don't think they mean for you to use AD's crop marks, so make sure when exporting to PDF that you check the More section of the export to PDF dialog and make sure they are not checked to be included. I would review their web site and even send an email about including application-generated crop marks. I would also ask if their crop marks are suppose to be included. And while at it, make sure of what bleed setting is needed in AD. To export those goofy marks in their template, one needs to use 1" of bleed in the document set up Bleed section of document setup). 3.5X2-SMART-V3.afdesign = note the 3 on the end. This is how I would have supplied the template. As per above, turn off the layer named -DO NOT TOUCH-Template before exporting to PDF and also only work on Layer 1. Goofy template they supply. If you get stuck, just holler... Mike biz-card-templates.zip Willy Pimentel 1 Quote

Willy Pimentel Posted February 13, 2018 Author Posted February 13, 2018 Here is one that i cannot figure out: I used the previous trick unchecking the template function and resaving the file as Illustrator. 8.5X11-TSBLACK-FR.ai When I open it in Designer, is In Pixels at 72 dpi and the document does not works well …. I see that it is there but it is hidden? There has to be a way I can open Illustrator CC files and have a good outcome…. Mike and Misferion? please help this newbie I have a few templates that I got from a printer that work well for AI but i am definately not having fun converting it to illustrator Quote Willy PimentelM1 Imac 16gb Mac os Ventura Latest
MikeW Posted February 13, 2018 Posted February 13, 2018 I would need to see the file. But, when resaved from Illy, make sure you ate saving as an AI file and the checkbox for pdf compatibility is checked. Mike Willy Pimentel 1 Quote

v_kyr Posted February 13, 2018 Posted February 13, 2018 Look at the layers x, y, w, h coordinates, they are way out and wrong sized in your AD import. If you have both apps AI and AD compare in the transformation panels the shown sizes for the layers and adjust them in AD accordingly. v_kyr Posted February 13, 2018 Posted February 13, 2018 Many things related to the AI format are pretty Adobe proprietary and won't be correctly imported here, the same is often the case with other vector formats like EPS and even SVG. The AD parsers don't handle everything those vector formats can contain when generated by other proprietary software. The overall problem is, as you can see, that there isn't usually any really portable vector format every software can deal equally well with. From all formats I know your best bet here still is probably to exchange files when possible as PDF, though there are also pitfalls possible. firstdefence Posted February 14, 2018 Posted February 14, 2018 @willypimentel Hi willy spent a few mins on your problem, It doesn't help that the Illustrator file was badly laid out with no layer naming, poorly designed edges (see collar area) and hit and miss groupings, but that aside, I vaguely remember, if you have trouble opening .ai files into pretty much anything, to save as an Illustrator 8 file, it will warn you of impending doom and apocalyptic events but push ahead anyway. firstdefence Posted February 14, 2018 Posted February 14, 2018 How it opens the Illustrator 8 .ai file and the document settings of the .ai file. The opened Illustrator file could do with some tidying by grouping all the not printable objects but it looks a bit better eh! I think this is all about back to basic's. How it looked on opening the Illustrator 8 formatted .ai doc Once I'd dragged the T-Shirt up to fit the screen ...and finally the settings of the opened Illustrator .ai file Willy Pimentel and jimmyplaysdrums 2 Quote iMac 27" 2019 Sequoia 15.0 (24A335), iMac 27" Affinity Designer, Photo & Publisher V1 & V2, Adobe, Inkscape, Vectorstyler, Blender, C4D, Sketchup + more... firstdefence Posted February 14, 2018 Posted February 14, 2018 Files I used, the first is the original .ai file saved as.. an Illustrator 8 file, the second .ai file is the original but with a bit of spring cleaning to the layers for better handling, I abhor sloppy work. The original .ai file was layer tidied a bit and some renamed for better reading. 8.5X11-TSBLACK-FR-2 Illustrator 8.ai 8.5X11-TSBLACK-FR-2 Tidied up a bit lol.ai Forgot to add, Assistant Manger might pop up it says this (see below) but the Colour Profile is actually set.
