In the current 2.3.0.2096 Beta it is no longer possible to add Cross-Reference Presets without any freeform text or existing presets being deleted...

The issue "Inserting a subfield into a cross-reference's text overwrites any and all existing text" (REF: AF-907) has been fixed by the developers in internal build "2.3.0.2139".
This fix should soon be available as a customer beta and is planned for inclusion in the next customer release.
Customer beta builds are announced here and you can participate by following these instructions.
If you still experience this problem once you are using that build version (or later) please reply to this thread including @Serif Info Bot to notify us.

@Affinity Info Bot : it looks like this bug is still active on macOS in Publisher v. 2.5.3.

An issue raised in this thread ("Inserting a subfield into a cross-reference's text overwrites any and all existing text") has now been reported to the developers by the testing team (Ref: AF-3705). Thank you very much for reporting this issue to us.

We believe this issue has been addressed in 2.6.0 beta (but the info bot was napping and failed to announce it, sorry) Please let us know if you think this has not been addressed correctly. Thank you

You’ve been working the Affinity Info Bot hard recently with all the changes and fixes.

Maybe you should advertise for an Assistant Info Bot to help out.
