Publisher won't open PDF

Recommended Posts

I have a brand new HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Print/Scan. It can scan to PDF but there are no options to configure the PDF, all I can select is Scan to PDF.

The PDFs produced cannot be opened by Publisher, I get an error saying 'this type of file is not supported'. Sample PDF and Screenshots attached.

I don't have this problem with any other PDFs, just the PDFs created by the HP scanner.

Help. Why can't Publisher open these PDFs?

Probably because the PDF files are broken.

  • Some applications (like Adobat Acrobat Reader) will silently fix the errors if possible, and happily Open the fixed file.
  • Some (like PDF-XChange Editor) will warn you about the errors, and offer to produce a repaired file, and Open the file anyway.
  • Some, like any of the Affinity applications, will detect the error and refuse to go further.

Here's what PDF-XChange Editor says about that PDF file:

I think I've seen that work in the past, @MikeW, for another broken PDF file.

don't post shit like this. you have nothing useful to offer.

you are just posting to get big post numbers and you are messing up the thread.

Because of the errors in the pdf. I gave you a workaround. That at least makes it possible to open/place such pdfs until Serif can deal with the issue.

Have a wonderful day.

You asked why it didn't work. I told you, and hinted at a workaround.

Cannot imagine why APub would have an issue with this file.

Who needs a correct XREF table?
Why would you need a correct contents reference for a PDF file you want to edit (not just display)?
Silly requirement.

Fun fact: the recovered/repaired PDF did open in APub.
Isn't that amazing!

These are community support forums and you cannot pick and choose who replies or tell them what to say. You also cannot swear.

If you do not want to see replies then you can ignore individual users as you choose (there's an option on the hover and in the profile) but to do so risks you missing correct answers and work-arounds, as have been given here.
