Pedro ghsfhfghfhs_a2
Hi, I bought this software recently and was able to work once on a mask layer but since then masking stopped working. I am following the process from your tutorials, and others on Youtube but nothing is working. I also recently found that I am not the only one to have come across 'bug' issues on masks. This is very disappointing, just glad I am don't rely on Affinity for a living. Are you able to provide advice? I Have attached my file. Bug in Affinity.afphoto Maybe a silly question, but are you sure you are using the Paint Brush. It's not unknown for someone to think there was a bug because they were trying to paint with the Colour Replacement Brush! (FWIW - I can paint on the mask of your image with no problem.) Are you using a brush with 100 % Opacity, flow, hardness and a real basic shape? There are some brushes which have very low opacity. Chip J.
Pedro, I'm not having any issues with masking on the file you provided. Maybe, you can show the error by recording your screen as you attempt to paint on the mask? 2021-05-18 09-08-41.mkv

Pedro ghsfhfghfhs_a2
Hi, forgot to say, i am using a desktop windows10 and have already re-installed Affinity Photo in repair mode and still not working.
kirkt
On the brush toolbar across the top of the application window, make sure "Protect Alpha" is not checked when painting on the mask. Also, you can Option-click (ALT-click) on the mask layer so that it becomes visible when you paint - this is an easier way to see the precise effect of the brush on the mask compared to the composite result painting on the mask should produce. kirk aslusers and R C-R

It is easy to overlook that setting, particularly on narrower displays where it may be hidden in the ">>" popup menu at the right edge of the workspace window. kirkt 1 Quote All 3 1.10.8, & all 3 V2.5.5 Mac apps; 2020 iMac 27"; 3.8GHz i7, Radeon Pro 5700, 32GB RAM; macOS 10.15.7 All 3 V2 apps for iPad; 6th Generation iPad 32 GB; Apple Pencil; iPadOS 15.

Chip J.
Pedro, check your brush settings. I was able to recreate your scenario by lowering the accumulation to 0. Try raising the the value to 100 and see what happens. See attached vid. MaskBug.mp4 Alfred and kirkt
Pedro ghsfhfghfhs_a2
Hi Mesquito, your advice resolved my issue!! Thank you so much! It was indeed the accumulation, I had it at zero (not sure why that happened?!). Thanks for taking the trouble to make the reference video. also many thanks to all members who have helped on this thread. jmwellborn and kirkt
Chip J.
You are welcome, don't give up on Affinity Photo. As I have found many times myself, it's usually user error. 🙂 This forum is a great place to get answers quickly. Alfred and kirkt
Pedro ghsfhfghfhs_a2
Thank you! Good advice. I don't have Photoshop so I dab between 5 different types of image editors (the old Paintshop Pro Home Edition, Serif DrawPlus, Corel Paintshop Pro x7 and Serif Photo Plus x7. I already had Serif products so Affinity seemed a logical purchase and does offer great features which has added to the scope of functions available to me now. Good to know the forum will be always on hand to help! Much appreciated once again. Edited May 20, 2021 by Pedro ghsfhfghfhs_a2

Pedro ghsfhfghfhs_a2
Hi, Is anybody able to confirm if it is possible to apply a mask in this scenario? Basically, I have 3 images one on top of each other. I than grouped them together. These 3 images are a small part in a larger image as background. I am trying to apply a mask to erase a small area in the same spot to all 3 images (juxtaposed). It is also worthwhile mentioning that the 3 images are PNG with transparency and coloured areas. I bring in a test image with no transparency and it works but mask does not on the grouped images. Is this because I am using an images with transparencies or is it because I grouped the 3 images? Thank you.
