Hi, I bought this software recently and was able to work once on a mask layer but since then masking stopped working. I am following the process from your tutorials, and others on Youtube but nothing is working. I also recently found that I am not the only one to have come across 'bug' issues on masks. This is very disappointing, just glad  I am don't rely on Affinity for a living. Are you able to provide advice? I Have attached my file.

The interface and options for the iPad version are different from those for the desktop version. Please keep to your own thread for further discussion of this issue.

Maybe a silly question, but are you sure you are using the Paint Brush. It's not unknown for someone to think there was a bug because they were trying to paint with the Colour Replacement Brush! (FWIW - I can paint on the mask of your image with no problem.)

Not me, it is the Selection Brush that messes me up.

Are you using a brush with 100 % Opacity, flow, hardness and a real basic shape? There are some brushes which have very low opacity.

Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.6
Affinity Designer 2.5.5 | Affinity Photo 2.5.5 | Affinity Publisher 2.5.5 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

On the brush toolbar across the top of the application window, make sure "Protect Alpha" is not checked when painting on the mask.  Also, you can Option-click (ALT-click) on the mask layer so that it becomes visible when you paint - this is an easier way to see the precise effect of the brush on the mask compared to the composite result painting on the mask should produce.

It is easy to overlook that setting, particularly on narrower displays where it may be hidden in the ">>" popup menu at the right edge of the workspace window.

I made a video attached.

Please refer to this Apple article about how to make clear, jitter-free screen recordings. It is very hard to tell much if you use a handheld phone or the like.

Thank you! Good advice. I don't have Photoshop so I dab between 5 different types of image editors (the old Paintshop Pro Home Edition, Serif DrawPlus, Corel Paintshop Pro x7 and Serif Photo Plus x7. I already had Serif products so Affinity seemed a logical purchase and does offer great features which has added to the scope of functions available to me now. Good to know the forum will be always on hand to help! Much appreciated once again.

I have used PSP since version3 (~18 years)and jumped over to Affinity Photo about 18 months ago and never looked back. Affinity  has so much more to offer, but like any software it does take time to learn..

Hi, Is anybody able to confirm if it is possible to apply a mask  in this scenario?

Basically, I have 3 images one on top of each other. I than grouped them together. These 3 images are a small part in a larger image as background.

I am trying to apply a mask to erase a small area in the same spot to all 3 images (juxtaposed).

It is also worthwhile mentioning that the 3 images are PNG with transparency and coloured areas.

I bring in a test image with no transparency and it works but mask does not on the grouped images.

Is this because I am using an images with transparencies or is it because I grouped the 3 images?

Thank you.

THANK YOU for this - I came here looking for help because my masks stopped working... I guess I had accidentally turned on protect alpha.  Glad I can get back to work now.   Thank you!
