Do you need to re-purchase Affinity Photo to get updated versions of the software (past 2.x version for example)?

Update (1.8 - 1.9 - 1.10 - 1.xx) is free, upgrade (1.xx - 2.0) not.

At some moment, in order to continue development, Serif needs the financial incentive from existing customers upgrading to a new, paid version. Although I personally appreciate getting new functionality without having to pay for it, this can't go on for too long. And, I'm lucky since I've been there since the beginning (or at least close to it) so I've got a lot of improvements for my initial bucks. Other people, who've only joined since version 1.9, will have more problems having to pay for a 2.X version.

I'm just guessing/hoping, but I would assume that version 2 will have some major additions and improvements to encourage people to purchase the apps again. If they don't need or want them, there's nothing to stop them continuing to use version 1. 😉

I'm also hoping (nudge, nudge; wink, wink) that Serif may introduce a small discount for people who buy all three apps at the same time. (Which I assume you'll have to do if you want to use Studio Link.)

I've read that you can already get a small discount for buying all 3 at the same time if you contact Serif directly via email to arrange the purchase. But it is generally no more than the typical 10-20% sale prices, I believe.

I'm sure there will be some kind of initial sale/discount period whenever the 2.x applications come out, too.

Well, they’ll obviously get even poorer value out of version 1 if they immediately upgrade to version 2, but @RNKLN wrote about people “who’ve joined since [my emphasis] version 1.9”, which includes versions from 1.10 onwards.

Yes, but that doesn't change the fact that those who join from (since) version 1.10, which also includes version 1.20 (if any), will be worse off than those who join from (since) version 1.9.

Of course, I mentioned the next version after 1.9 intentionally, because the incorrect assumptions that version 1.9 is followed by 2.0 were mentioned quite often here.

When you've had a Mac for a while you're already familiar with .10, .11 etc. releases.
