Affinity Photo 1.9.1, What happened?

Recommended Posts

I think the update 1.9.1 is full of bugs, I experienced random crashes while using the latest version 1.9.1. Whenever I drag a photo from the stock panel (from Pixabay) my affinity photo app keeps on closing. I did not encounter this on 1.8.5.

Also, the performance is very slow, is there a way to fix this. I am having hard time using this 1.9.1 as the response and hovering of mouse is very slow on my laptop, by the way this is the specs of my laptop.

Intel Core i3-7100u
240gb SSD (affinity installed on ssd)
1tb hdd drive
8gb ram
intel hd 620 gpu

All known problems the dev teams are actually working on and will hopefully fix for the next update version. When you look at the actual beta versions you can see what has been addressed so far yet!

I hope that they get it fixed, I am really disspointed on the 1.9.1, I had no choice but to revert back to 1.8.5 as it runs smoother and fluid.

I assume you are under Windows, the move to 1.9.x versions introduced new hardware acceleration support (for OpenCL), which as default is enabled under Preferences->Performance settings and can lead in combination with certain misbehaving OpenCL GPU drivers to crashes. - The stock panel service feature though is another story here, there drag'n'drop might not work due to some lately service side (Pixabay) made changes.

For those with GPU driver related OpenCL problems (due to the default enabled performance hardware acceleration settings) switching those off aka disabling OpenCL hardware acceleration under the "Preferences>Performance" settings often fixes those issues.

I am having crashes as well.  I bought 1.9.1 on 12 March to compare with GIMP but so far I haven't even been able to try it. I started exploring the toolbar and it crashed. On restarting I opened a jpeg and tried the clone tool which did nothing apart from provoking another crash.  Quite unusable and very disappointing.

Do you mean Pixabay or Unsplash?

One of those, probably that Unsplash one ...

... though it might have been fixed by that service in the meantime, as far as I interpret this posting here correctly ...

On the Mac side, nothing has changed with Unsplash -- dragging in an image doesn't crash the app but nothing is added to the document. Pixabay & Pexels work fine.

Double clicking opens at least in Safari then. Not sure if it is an Unsplash or instead more Affinity related problem here on Macs.

I am fairly sure from what the developers have said that the problem is with Unsplash itself, some change in its SDK or the like.

Despite what the devs told, there is no official Unsplash C/C++ SDK, just their common API usage descriptions one can adapt to then by writing own code for programming languages their SDKs don't offer (like this Java client one).

Regarding the SDK, note that I wrote "or the like."

Anyway, it seems the problem started on a specific date in March, one not directly related to the date of any of the 1.9.x releases.

Maybe, can't say I never really used that stock image stuff, since I always prefer my own image shots.

Having this same issue

Please see the below post regarding the Stock Studio, we are aware of this issue and are working with the stock providers to resolve this -

Dragging from the Assets panel is giving me a similar problem

If you are having trouble with assets then this is likely a separate issue, so can you please create a new post in the bugs section of the forums, providing as much information as possible for me?

Thanks in advance :)

FWIW, Unsplash is working in the most recent Mac APUB beta (in the Photo persona). Not yet working in the Mac AD & AP betas though.

Hy Dan,

its the first bug I have detected in Aff-Ph, because I'm just head on changing from Adobe to Aff. So I have to discover the Apps inbetween, while still working with Adobe.

If I click onto the open windows of Assets-Panels, it folds out to show the presets and the photo-mini, but clicking to get the function-menue is most the time without any results. Sometimes you cant get the menue with 5-6-7-8 clicks, another time you need to make a verrrrrrrrrrry slow double-click, anothertime you still get nothing ! This is with the WACOM. With the Magic-Trackpad from Apple its slightly better, but its always a Toto-Lotto you get it or you don't ! I'm a very exerienced OSX-User and working with MAC from 1990 on, so you can trust in me I have tryed it all, mouse behavior, Wacom Prefs a.s.o. no result ! Even PRAM-delete does not make the issue better. The only thing is, you downgrade to 1.8.6 and the issue seems to be corrected !

Best Bobby

This thread posting here tells the cause, the whole is caused due to latest Unsplash API changes by Unsplash, aka ...

  • (Query string parameters have been added to the photo’s download_location URL)

Thus any third party software which uses the Unsplash API (like Affinity in this case) has to change and modify the access usage of the Unsplash API strings accordingly. - Most Affinity BETA versions already have been adapted to the new, recently made Unsplash API changes, so that using this Unsplash service should work again!
