This error indicates that the server has determined that you are not allowed access to the thing you've requested, either on purpose or due to a misconfiguration . It's probably because the site owner has limited access to it and you don't have permission to view it. The vast majority of the time, there's not much you can do to fix things on your (*client) end. There are four common causes for 403 Forbidden error (server side) . Here they are listed from most likely to least likely:

  • An empty website directory
  • No index page
  • Incorrect settings in the .htaccess file
  • Permission / Ownership error

If authentication credentials were provided in the request, the server considers them insufficient to grant access. The client SHOULD NOT automatically repeat the request with the same credentials. The client MAY repeat the request with new or different credentials. However, a request might be forbidden for reasons unrelated to the credentials.

the issue might be intermittent, but the error message clearly indicates an issue between Affinity‘s chosen CDN Cloudfront  and the actual forum server, secured behind the CDN

Maybe it depends on what country or region you are in?

Imaging you are a hungry guy entering a self-service restaurant through one of multiple doors. The staff at the counter takes your order, but then states he has an issue talking with the kitchen. Do you think the problem is caused by which door you took to enter the restaurant?

No, but it might be because the restaurant is so busy that the kitchen staff won't take any more orders.

But analogies aside, it is evident that some of us do not get the error while others do. The only thing I can see that might explain that is we are in different parts of the world. Do you have a better explanation?

CloudFront may well have different gateway servers in different parts of the world. But I would expect a particular user to have issues with all parts of the forum, not just one section.

I am fairly sure that CouldFront has different servers in different parts of the world.

But maybe it is a configuration issue that applies to only certain parts of the forum, or even just to certain topics? I do not know if that is possible, though.

The point is: its a problem in the responsibility of Affinity and the contracted suppliers, not in the responsibility of users.

Then who was it targeted at? I do not think anyone said fixing this was the  responsibility of users.
