  1. I have a shape (Stroke + Fill), with Outer shadow (fx). Add Gradient overlay (fx), and Colour overlay (fx), .and Inside Outline (fx). Now I set Opacity or Blend mode for Outline. To my great surprise will not start to shine Color overlay, or Gradient overlay, or Shape (his Stroke and Fill), but Shadow! I expected the Shape stack with fx to look as follows, but using the Outline will probably cut everything under it, except for the shadow. Is this a bug, or is it an expected feature? Thank you Edit: Current implementation (object trimming) I understand. Outline is "line out of object". In order to achieve this in all circumstances (even when selecting Inside and Center alignment), the object must be trimmed. Then it is strange if the shadow is formed by the original object, but not by the trimmed. In any case, it would be advisable to point out this destructive behavior (object trimming) in help. Thank you

    Affinity Photo Painter's brushes

Hey guys, Just bought Affinity Photo and since there's no Opacity + Flow pressure sensitivity options, I've pulled a rabbit out of a hat and starting off with some tips from this thread I've made some brushes and thought of sharing them with the nice people on these forums. The last in the list I think are especially useful for paiting. Hope you'll like them. Painter's Brushset 2.afbrushes.zip
  3. In Affinity Designer it seems there is no way to change the opacity of global colors. This is becoming frustrating when designing UIs. Opacity is an integral part of color schemes in Google's Material Design; it completely depends on opacity to create visual hierarchy. From Google's Material Design Guidelines: "Using opacity instead of shifting colors often creates better contrast and relative luminance. For example, gray text (#727272) becomes hard to read if the background color changes to magenta." Is this feature on your road map?
  4. Hi all My first attempt at using Publisher Beta Version 1.7.0.206. I needed to create a square image for Instagram to advertise a concert. I had a square image of the church which I imported into publisher. It was rather large so I had to reduce the size by dragging a corner to fit on the page. Although the edges of the image were visible in what I would call the work area around the page the photo's detail was not, which I found strange. The image was too bright to show the white text I wanted to use so I drew a grey rectangle over it and reduced the opacity to 64%. I then used the artistic text to layout the text. I was surprised to find how easy it was to line up the various text sizes. Once I was happy with the text layout I grouped them then used select all and aligned all objects centrally on the page horizontally and vertically. I then exported as a png using selection with background. So my first impressions are that this is excellent software apart from the work area. I need to create a multiple page document to see if its possible to park objects in the work area to move from one page to another. As objects don't seem to be visible in the work area I'm not sure how this would be possible.
  5. Hello! Affinity Photo is a really good software (except for the constant crashes). But it still lacks a simple basic and very important feature: BRUSH OPACITY CONTROLLED BY PRESSURE. If this option is somewhere hidden, please tell me. Oh and I don't accept that using pressure for the "Flow" option is an alternative. Common guys, many simple and free softwares have this: Krita, Gimp, Blender, or simple and cheap softwares like Artrage. I know this software is not made for digital painting, but I don't use it for that. I use it for render post processing, which is the same as phothography editing. And opacity pressure is very important to softly change masks, to add a bit of overlay or color dodge. So, (maybe someone already made this request) my suggestion is to simply add an opacity pressure button, just like the one Photo already has to control brush size, right beside it.
  6. Does anyone here know how to setup the touch ring on a Wacom Graphics tablet to use for opacity, if it's possible? I use a Wacom Intuos Pro 5 Thanks Martigny
  7. In Designer the opacity slider for fill and stroke is not showing the right grayscale values for opacity. It goes from white (left) to black (right) in order to set opacity to 0% to 100%. That's the complete opposite of the industry standard and thus 100% counterintuitive; The slider should go from black (left) to white (right) instead, because 0% opacity is black and 100% opacity is white. That's the case in all graphics and video software I know of working with opacity. And that's for a reason: we think of black as a light turned off and white as a light turned on. And even the same way as opacity values gets stored in the files: 0 is black, highest value is white. It seems like in this case not OPACITY is shown, but TRANSPARANCY instead (the inverse of opacity). But the label clearly says OPACITY and the parameter opacity is being used in the rest of Designer too, so the slider should show the OPACITY value too. Next to this there is a checkerboard background behind the grayscale range of the slider, but both the white end as the black end of the slider let through the same amount of this checkerboard background (both around 50%). So this doesn't show users at all what end of the slider results in a fill or stroke being transparent, so doesn't make any sense like this and only makes it even more confusing. This should be: slider from left to right going from black to white, where the checkboard shines through on the left side (black), but not on the right side (white). And to make it even more intuitive to users I'd move the color-circle on the left of the slider to the right. That way it would be even clearer to users when this color is seen for the fullest (when the slider is moved to the right). Please change this!! This is wrong and very frustrating for professionals working with graphics all day. Especially when using all kinds of different graphics and video software together. And because of the industry standard not something we should get used to learn the other way around. Thanks!
  8. When stacking two images I try to manually blend them using masks. However, the brush hardness is always at 100% and the brush opacity settings are ignored as well, which makes manual blends very difficult, if not impossible.
  9. I'd like to add background color to a page but can't figure out how to do it. I select the color with the color picker. There are two opacity slides, but neither does anything as far as I can tell. What am I doing wrong?
  10. The numerical transparency values for the fill in the table are missing...
  11. When you place an image directly on the canvas, the slider for opacity works as it should. However, when placing an image inside a picture frame, the slider has no effect. When you open the downward triangle to reveal the picture placed within the frame, opacity change is not available. Either this is a bug or it makes the excellent picture frame tool a lot less useful.
  13. I only found this strange effect after quite a bit of chin stroking and hair pulling with something that was confusing the heck out of me. Workflow to re-create the issue (in Designer for Windows): 1. Create a new document containing an artboard (A5 landscape will be fine). 2. Draw a triangle that almost covers the whole artboard (don't go near the edges so you can see the effect better). 3. Give the triangle a Black stroke colour and a thick stroke width (16pt will be fine). 4. Go the the Export persona and export the artboard as "SVG (for web)". 5. View the exported SVG in a browser. All should look just fine at this point. 6. Go back to the Draw persona. 7. Select the artboard layer - NOT the triangle layer (but it does the same thing either way). 8. Change the Opacity of that layer to 90% (this is the thing I did by accident that was producing the strange problem). 9. Go back the the Export persona and export the artboard as "SVG (for web)" again. 5. View the exported SVG in a browser. The image now looks blurred. It's actually an SVG containing a raster of the triangle. You can prove this by editing the SVG in a text editor. Is this expected behaviour? (It took me ages to figure out what I'd done "wrong".) I did a quick search and only found the following related issue: * https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/63257-texts-rasterized-when-exporting-to-pdf
  14. When using the overlay brush in develop i have to repeatedly go over the area to achieve 100% opacity. I have tried setting brush attributes that work for other brushes but this does not work on the overlay brush, plus I have tried using a tablet & pen and a mouse. Where can I change the attributes for this brush?
  15. Hi, I have a logo that has some solid elements, but also some elements that have a 50% opacity. I've tried exporting as an eps in a number of different ways but every time I import the eps in to photoshop the semi transparent elements become a solid colour. Can anybody help, it's driving me insane! :-) Basically I need a semi transparent logo. Hope somebody can help me. Many thanks.
  16. I can't find any way to change either the noise or opacity setting of a global colour. The "Edit Global Colour" pop-up doesn't have these options and changing the noise/opacity just sets it for the currently-selected layer. I've tried double-clicking in various places and different menus but can't figure out what to do. Am I overlooking something obvious, or is this a trick that has been missed?
  17. When exporting a file to SVG from within Designer, for each layer or group having an opacity set below 100%, Designer automatically adds an extra, redundant, group just to apply opacity to: * Adding a group without opacity set less then 100%: <g id="myID"> <rect x="152.01" y="85.967" width="142.705" height="84.033"/> </g> * But when opacity of the group is set below 100%: <g id="myID"> <g opacity="0.5"> <rect x="152.01" y="85.967" width="142.705" height="84.033"/> </g> </g> This results in larger and more complicated SVG-outputs then necesary, but most importantly: it breaks the structure and hierarcy as meant by the designer causing all kind of problems when using the SVG for styling and javascript usages: interactivity and animations. Because suddenly there is an extra, unexpected level in hierarcy and the ID is on a different level then the opacity. That way webdevelopers can't trust the ID anymore. Instead the opacity should be applied directly to the group like visually done in Designer, keeping the structure the same as in the GUI and so meant by the designer: <g id="myID" opacity="0.5"> <rect x="152.01" y="85.967" width="142.705" height="84.033"/> </g>
  18. Hello, just wondering how to do the following with Affinity. Let's say i have a photo of a nude woman and want to add some sort of transparency that when you see the photo of the nude woman, you do not see the skin, you see the photo of a landscape or a pattern. Hopefully, i am able to explain what i am looking for. Thanks for your help,
  19. OK...... When I am in pixel persona and I select a brush...ANY BRUSH and then turn down the opacity....... it de-selects the brush. I have tried it all I have tried unplugging my graphics tablet I have tried using my mouse I have tried installing the new version of Designer I have tried restarting the program and my computer. The only thing I have NOT done is uninstall and reinstall because there are a ton of profiles and brushes that I will manually have to go in and reinstall.......and I do not have th afternoon to do it Any help is greatly appreciated J
  20. In the desktop version of Affinity Designer, when you apply an ‘Outline’ layer effect with a gradient fill you have full control over the opacity of that fill. I can’t see a way to vary the opacity of the ‘Outline’ fill in Affinity Photo for iPad. Is it possible, and if so, how?
  21. This has been an issue for a while now. The blur brush tool adjustments in the tool bar (opacity, hardness and flow) don't seem to be doing anything. I've been using affinity photo now for about 7 months now. This never used to be an issue - the opacity, hardness and flow sliders would all have an effect on the blur brush tool. However all of the sudden, one day they stopped working and the blur brush tool is stuck on max blur! Can anybody tell me why or how to fix this? Note: these adjustments work just fine on paint brushes, burn/dodge brush tools etc its only an issue with the blur tool.
  22. Hello Affinity, I'm so glad to see an app like this in the marketplace. However, I can't use it for digital painting and illustration yet because of one MAJOR missing feature: Tablet pressure controlled opacity with the paint brush. As it stands you can set pressure on brush size and flow (among other things) but for digital painters opacity is the most important pressure control you can have. I'd say it's pretty darn important for retouchers as well. Please add this feature soon, because as of now Affinity Photo is unusable for me. Thanks!
  23. When creating a new palette (ordinary or global), the opacity (alpha channel) is copied from the selected object (if there is one). There is no way to change the opacity after palette colour creation. Even using "Edit Fill..." and using the colour picker does not work. So if (for example) a global palette colour is created, accidentally with a opacity value of less than 100%, it cannot be later fixed. It would require a new palette colour to be created, and each object referencing the incorrect colour to be modified to use the corrected colour. Thus in part defeating the purpose of global palette colours.
  24. Hi, I am looking for a way to control the opacity of lightening and darkening effect of blending a layer separately. Such as 10% opacity for darkening and 65% opacity for lightening. What I am NOT looking for - duplication of the layer and have the two layers blend with different blend modes. The problem is that the top layer would then be applied on the result of blending the lower layer, changing the final result. Another problem is that changes to one instance of the layer would need to be manually propagated to the duplicate. - blending based on the absolute luminosity of the current layer, or absolute luminosity of the lower layer. It is their relative luminosity which is important instead. One of the things this would enable is selective control of the opacity of the dark and light halos you get with Unsharp mask live filter. Thanks
  25. Hi, I am a beginner at affinity photo and I am trying to create virtual graduated filters using gradients on adjustment layers but I've ran into a problem: Whenever I try and use the gradient tool there is a weird box. Whenever I edit the gradient points it looks normal but when I let go the gradient is only constrained to the box: (Gradient while mouse is editing one of the points) (Gradient while mouse is not editing the points) Is there anyway I can fix this problem so my image can look normal? Thanks, Jayvin
