  1. Hi, I'm new to Affinity Photo so I apologise if the behaviour below is normal (I did search FAQ's) I navigated to the folder containing the file I am working on to find multiple copies of the file. It looks like each time I have pressed 'cmd S' a new version of the file has been created, kind of like 'Save as'. Is this normal for Affinity Photo? It doesn't do this behaviour in Affinity Designer. Is it some kind of versioning? Or is it a bug? I'm saving in iCloud Drive. Cheers Tom
  2. Hi, I do a lot of photo editing in Affinity Photo and Capture One. I also do a lot of vector editing in Affinity Designer. Last year, to speed up workflow, I bought a new Apple iMac Pro 3 GHz 10-Core Intel Xeon W, 64GB memory, Radeon Pro Vega 64X 16 GB graphics card and 2 TB SSD. This machine did cost me 8500€! This is very very expensive for me, but previously I had a MacBook Pro (2016) that was too slow for my graphics editing. So I thought to me let's spend a little more money to get a really powerful and fast machine, so my graphics editing will be in realtime without waiting time at all. At least that was what I wished and thought. But I have to say that neither Affinity Photo nor Affinity Designer have become much faster with the new computer. Both programs often have very long waiting times when working. I always watch the CPU usage and see that no core is ever used to its maximum. Let alone that all cores are used. It is absolutely incomprehensible to me that I have waiting times in the programs if there are enough performance resources available but they are not being used. For example, I like to work with the Inpainting Brush in Affinity Photo. Sometimes I really have to wait about a minute for it to finish calculating. It is very annoying. During this time, my computer has enough resources that Affinity does not use to calculate it faster. It may take advantage of 2-3 cores in half and the GPU by a quarter. But the rest of the cores do almost nothing. And we're not talking about huge photos here. I recently edited a 12MP iPhone photo. Or I work in Affinity Designer with graphics that consist of approx. 2000 elements. It is almost impossible to select all of these elements and move them around. It is so jerky that the graphics are rendered here and there and lag behind. It is impossible to work with. Here too it can be observed that perhaps two of the CPU cores do something, but are also underutilized. The rest does nothing. The GPU doesn't do anything either. Believe me, I've tried every combination of performance settings in Affinity Photo and Designer. Because it really annoys me that everything is so slow! But it only got slower than faster. I would understand that there is a waiting period if all resources are used to the maximum and there are no resources left. But because the CPU and GPU of my machine are mostly idle while I see slow process bars and long waiting and reaction times, I wonder if something is wrong? My question is, can I do something about it e.g. use certain special settings or is Affinity Photo and Designer not developed for using the performance of my machine? I've already spoken to Apple Support who checked my machine. But everything is normal and fine. I have reinstalled macOS and every app. But it hasn't changed. I mean a year ago this machine was advertised as "Power for Pros" or as "the fastest Mac every build". It would only have been faster with the 18 cores version with 256GB memory. So I ask myself, what machine do I need to buy from Apple to have a noticeable speed advantage? Best regards, Christoph
  3. My old mac is dying and I wanted to know if its possible to switch my license from a mac to a pc? I hate to switch but macs are expensive and not that great anymore.
  4. It seems like something is not working as we are used to, or probably I am missing something, and searching for 1 hour does not bring up any satisfying results. I would like to remove part of one shape using another shape in a way that I can see the transparent background, and unfortunately, topics like this also did not solve the problem. Here is an example screenshot, similar to what I would like to achieve: I would like to remove the inner rectangle in a way to subtract the outer one and see the transparent background. Thank you so much for your help.

  6. As I search the forum, this very severe difficulty/bug makes my migration to APu miserable. I just have startet to built up a layout for a municipal periodical. I'm in typesetting since over 25 years, using Mac, .indd and my standard fonts (like "Berthold Akzidenz Grotesk"), system admin. The test-layout consists of 5 pages with text starting at page 2-3 with text frames chained up by hand and one text frame for a picture captation. There are a lot of tests with other fonts (to get optimized space requirement for the lot of text, later in the final issue) and intense work with styles ... As I export that test file to PDF/X-3 or -4 the 5th or 6th time, I get the note: The file <path and name.pdf> could not be written" (or created?. I use a German version). What a horror, if that occurs 2 days befor printing!? - this is the second time, I run into that "no go". - may be, this occurs if one has a text overflow (in a not-linked text frame)? Even, if you repair that by linking that text frame with a next one on the next page? - is APu addicted to postscript printer drivers? I have a Xerox printer with original Adobe Postscript (oh, dear ...) and the last days I updated it. Failure despite or because that update? - may be, there is an inconvenience with fonts, which have an "embedding flag"? In all my decades of (Mac) praxis, I *never* had been confronted with that nonsense. But now with APu? >> There can be any bug in a new publishing software, but PDF export has to run under any circumstances and whatever barbwire a user has filled into his layout. An PDF export has to go (may be, not a good PDF, but anyway one). This reminds me of my times with QuarkXpress: After *weeks* of layout on a catalogue for an art auction house, all the sudden in the morning Quark tells: The file couldn't be opened ...!   7. Hi, I tried asking my question in another topic: But since nobody responded, I'm trying my luck here. So, I got a fresh install of AD, version 1.7. And when I try to draw with a vector brush there is a lag between my actual movements and the time it appears as a stroke on my canvas. There is no problem with pixel brushes in Pixelmode. I use a MacBook Air (2015) runs on Mojave (10.14.6). 1.6 GHZ i5, 8GB/1600 MHz/DDR3. So I looked at my settings in AD and unticked the metal compute box. I set the dropdown to OpelGL. I set my document to web-RGB/8 en 72 dpi. But no change. I also have an old version of Adobe Illustrator (CS5). When painting there with vector brushes there is no lag. So it's not the performance of my laptop, so it seems. I use a Wacom Bamboo, but also with just the MacBooks trackpad it has the same lag. Any suggestions for me to try?
  8. AFPUB 1.8.4.648 OS X 10.15.3 Originally posted August 2019. As this is publishing software, it would be extremely helpful to have grammar check built in. Without this feature, one would have to offload the text somehow, check it in some other piece of software, and then manually make the corrections. I'm not sure whether the grammar checking should be "on demand" and/or "as you type." Either way, it's going to be very handy to have built into Affinity Publisher. On the Mac, when you use the Shift-Command-Colon keys it brings up the "Spelling and Grammar" window. The grammar is built into the operating system of the Mac in the user's chosen language. I noted that this is the same window that I see in AFPUB (more or less). See the two screen captures below. I'd suggest that AFPUB be made aware of that for the Mac and be able to invoke the Grammar Check using the check box provided on the Mac Spelling and Grammar window. That means you would not have to create a grammar checker inside AFPUB, just use the operating system's built-in capability. Perhaps there might be something similar in Windows?

  10. Hi, I am playing around with Indexes for the first time and having a hard time removing topics from the Index panel. More specifically, in my case right now, I cannot remove a "See..." cross reference. Am I just missing a keystroke here? Additionally, 'refreshing' or 'updating' an Index doesn't seem to work at all. I can only get a current index on the page by deleting the original and creating a new one. Using a macbook pro. Thanks!
  11. All of a sudden colors are not properly being represented in Designer. Attached is a screenshot showing that the color #333333 is showing up as #7b7c7b. Does anyone have any idea why?
  12. Question: Is it possible to have a 'icon size slider' similar to the one found in MacOS Finder? Issue/situation: I mostly find my documents in 'icon view' but I am not able to increase the icon sizes in the Affinity Photo open document dialog, similar to how I can in the MacOS finder. Is there a way to do so or is this a feature request for Affinity Devs? Attachment: See attached screenshot of the icon size slider for reference. Hey i really like the affinity designer and photo and i want to buy them but before i will do this i need to know if i will be able to install the programs on my mac an my pc for the same licence? From what i founded i had understand that not able cause mac dont use key codes but i have start my trail on my mac few days ago and i have got a key code for the two programs
  14. Question: In Affinity Photo Export Persona, is it possible to set the export path relative to the source document? Issue/situation: I have a small AppleScript setup which creates a predefined folder structure for most of my commercial photo work, and once I'm done editing an image I will need to export it in multiple resolutions. The exported files are always placed in a fixed location relative to the source document and it would be great if there were an option to then export relative to the source document. My folder structure looks as following: Project folder name – 01 Source –– 01 phocus capture –– 02 capture one –– 03 other – 02 process –– 01 focus stacking –– 02 retouch ( export from retouch folder into low res, high res and website ) –– 03 assets – 03 export –– 01 low res version ( low res versions folder, always relative to the source document in 02 process / 02 retouch ) –– 02 high res version ( high res versions folder, always relative to the source document in 02 process / 02 retouch ) –– 03 contact sheet –– 04 website version Operating system: OSX Catalina 10.15.3 Affinity Photo: Version 1.8.3 Any help or input on this matter is much appreciated, as I'm considering moving from other editors to Affinity Photo. Hi everyone, here's my problem: I'm working on a Publisher document and, while I work on this document and only on this document, when I press the apostrophe key to insert the apostrophe character (') I get the "«" (without quotes) character instead. Again, only in this Affinity Publisher document on my Mac. With other docs or applications everything is fine. Being Italian, I need a lot the apostrophe character. I am pretty sure i did something but really I have no idea on where to look. I started checking in Preferences>Abbreviations for all languages and in Preferences>Keybord Shortcuts even if these settings are global for all documents and, again I am having this problem ONLY in one (important) doc. Does a single doc have his own settings on keyboard shortcuts or text expander? Any other idea? Thank you for your help
  16. I have Photo and Designer. I run Catalina on both my desktop and my laptop. These apps showed up to be updated on my laptop but the apps don't show up to be updated ever on my Desktop. I have rebooted. What can I do? Thanks, -John
  17. I have downloaded the updated apps and installed them, but when I try to open them get an error message that the files are damaged and need to be put in the trash. I see that others have had similar problems, but can't find a solution. Please can anyone give me an idea of what to try next to get them opened and validated? It was so easy when I downloaded them last time!
  18. Hello helpers, I would like to ask, in what file and path e.g. the user created/loaded color palettes of APu are stored (and may be, other user specific settings). In order to go back to the original installation status of APu, I deleted *all* files in all (even invisible) folders on the hard disc, whose names contain "serif" or "affinity" or "publisher". Then I downloaded and installed a fresh version of APu, starttet it and got asked for the licence key and so on. But after start of APu, as I opened the color swatches palette, there was still the list of my user loaded colors list (taken weeks ago from .indd). 😮 That list of user defined colors must be stored in a (intentionally hidden) file and path, which do not contain the letters mentioned above.   19. Today I went to open a new Affinity Photo file and it froze. It just kept showing the spinning wheel on my 16" Macbook Pro. I forced quit and opened AP again. this time I tried to open a rcent file and the same thing happened. I am not sure if it is the cause, but I think my mac auto updated the OS. It shows as 10.15.3 Can anyone help me with this?
  20. Create a text block and put some words in. While still editing that, the Mac defines option-arrows to move the insertion point by words and by extension option-shift-arrows. (Windows ctrl-arrows). It appears you remapped control to command which is incorrect. Command-arrows means move to the end of the line. Option-↑↓ is beginning/end of paragraph respectively though I can't see a lot of use here. I can't fix this using the keyboard control panel and find it extremely aggravating. If I'm at work, my brain thinks Windows. I can't handle 30 years using a Mac and it not working like a Mac. Mildly annoying but not aggravating and it can be fixed using the Keyboard Syspref (or the very Windows one you could have omitted) but is only cosmetic and not worth the effort. Apple decided to show each modifier key to hold so it doesn't show ⌘> for Bigger but shows ⇧⌘. Related... we're used to icons for Portrait/Landscape which required too much thinking to find. Maybe Adobe got "clever" there too (not going to pull up PS Elements to check). There are standardized keys beyond ZXCV such as all Apple apps. Check out the apps that come with a Mac and you'll see a slew for text. (Harkening back to keypads, it doesn't show ⇧⌘= but ⌘+ or at least it does on keyboards with one like mine.) I can understand following Adobe shortcuts and again, can change them so it's not as big of a deal.
  21. I searched the site and faq without luck. I have an outlined font that I want to fill the whitespace with a gradient. I tried converting the typed text to curves and it appears to have made a single bezier line through the entire glyph (take a C and put a line on the surrounding the inner continuing to the outer edge and then close the C to an O keeping the lines). So, it's treating the text strokes as fill-able but not the whitespace. The attached how do I fill outlineed font with a gradient.pdf shows it well Is there an way without converting to bitmaps (yuck)? Thanks❗️

Hello everybody, I have a problem with exporting a Publisher document on Mac: I use double-page spreads in Publisher, but once exported as PDF both pages are merged, creating one horizontal page in the PDF instead of two facing portrait pages. When printing, this subsequently leads to false proportions and makes it literally impossible to have the magazine I'm working on printed correctly. How can I fix this? Thanks for your help!
  23. I have drawn some black lines, on a separate layer, but have now decided the lines need to be a different color. They took me quite awhile to get exactly how I wanted them, so I really don't want to try to redraw them; especially since I would like to have two versions of the lines, and that would require redrawing them absolutely perfectly(not possible for me) twice. I need to retain the feathering, so the flood fill won't work, since it makes them look thicker and chunky. I followed the instructions for the Color Replacement brush, but the only color that is changing is the very lightest of the feathered pixels along the edge of the line, but even they are not changing to the correct color, but a somewhat grayish hue of the replacement color I chose. I did see another discussion, when I searched the Color Replacement brush, about the color not changing correctly. That person finally resolved his problem by using "Protect Alpha", but I can't find "Protect Alpha" in my program. I did try changing the color using an adjustment layer and recoloring it, but I can't get the color I want.
  24. Hi there, I bought Affinity on the app sore on my mac and have recently got a new desk top windows PC. I was looking to get affinity on this machine too as i know you can have it on a number of machines if its just you using it. When i go to sign into my account, it dose not recognise the email address that is associated with my apple ID. Is there a way for me to get this on both PC and Mac without having to purchase two licences Thanks!
  25. Evening folks - quick question, How does one delete an Asset I created and added to the Assets panel it is no longer needed? Didn't want to start hitting 'delete' until I knew this correct procedure. Appreciate it. -Christo
