Hi! I'd love to see a Gaussian Blur tool that acted similarly to the Transparency or Gradient tools ... You could have the blur get progressively heavier as you dragged the mouse pointer towards the edge of the object. Having the ability to have a "blur gradient" could make for some awesome effects! Does anyone know of a way to duplicate this effect without the Affinity folks having to come up with a new widget tool?- 9 replies

I'm kind of new to Affinity Designer, really any graphic design software, and have a question. When I have drawn/created an image in Affinity Designer in the CMYK color and I'm saving it as a TIFF CMYK, what resampling option should I use when I'm going to be printing it? Erm, it doesn't, for me. Affinity Designer - Mac I have the pref set to open documents on startup but AD always launches with no documents. I've tried deselecting the pref then reselecting it, having a variety of documents open when I quit etc but it always launches with no documents open. Not a huge problem but I'd like to fix it. Anyone any suggestions, please? Thanks Pat -
I have been working on an educational poster, on and off over a few months time. Until now, I had kept it at one size (11" x 17"), and have it looking fairly nice in that size: After printing some test copies, it became clear that this was going to be way too small for what we are trying to do. So I tried to scale it up to 20" x 30", and it quickly got ugly fast: It does not matter if I try to scale the whole artboard up or create a new, larger artboard and paste everything into it, I get the same hideous results. I have been messing with this for a week now, trying different things like adding or removing constraints, and it seems like I am only digging myself into a deeper hole. In some cases, when I try to remove constraints, the objects jump clear off the artboard and/or resize themselves to crazy proportions. Every element in this poster is a vector element that I created myself, and there are no imported images. It is apparent that I am doing something wrong, and it probably has something to do with constraints. Can anyone offer suggestions on how I can get myself out of this pickle? I am willing to share the project file if need be.

Hi all, I apologize in advance if this comes off as a rant. I have been trying to use Designer on and off for a couple of months and I admit that I am nowhere near familiar with the program. As a heavy Illustrator user I found working with artboards and layers very frustrating. How do I lock the artboard and prevent it from being selected? Why is it that when I move an object that's in a separate layer, it suddenly becomes a child of the artboard layer? Is there a way to change how selections work? Is my problem really that I am comparing it to Illustrator? Again, I apologize since this is rant-y than I what I intended it to be. -
This i a minor thing but would be nice. When adding brushes, gradients, macros, assets, and so on. If when you went to import, it went straight to a prestructed directory with the INSTALL directory or one of your choosing. So each time we do a install we are not renavigating back to the AFFINITY directory. Would keep things tidy and faster for adding components. Gary -
Hi all, Can anyone help? I just bought Designer to go with Photo. I create something in Designer and go File>Edit in Photo. Make changes in Photo but cannot, for the life of me, work out how to return it back to Designer. How do I do that? Seems like it must be easy! Thanks! Phil -
Would be great to have an OFFSET PATH feature , like Illustrator has, to reduce or enlarge an object. This is particularly hand on more complex objects when trying to resize in uniform. If we have something like this for desginer please let me know. Also something like CADTOOLS would be awesome. I am create a lot of graphics that go straight to a printer, and the measurement tools that CADTOOLS have are fast and easy to add dimensions to each piece of art on a artboard. Saves alot of time typing it in, and there is not mistaking size of art for the printer. Thanks Gary

I want to draw a shape like you can see in the first image. The black stroke should go around the shape but interrupt at multiple points. The filling should be everywhere within that shape. I use shapes with the same background color which cover the stroke part (second image) but that does not always work. Is there a better way to do this? I know I can use the "erase" blend mode but I think this causes rasterization on export. If anyone knows how to draw a shape like in the first image please let me know... I dont want to draw a separate curve and place it on top the grey shape. It has to be one shape for easy editing.

Hi Can anyone tell me if the eye dropper options I select when the eye dropper tool is selected (eg 5x5) then applies to the eye dropper accessed via a colour palette (for instance, the Fill palette)? Many thanks

Designer should tell me which part will be rasterized. I almost always choose "rasterize not supported areas" but I just want to have more information than just saying "some areas will be rasterized". I often come in a situation where it is just not clear why rasterization happens and giving more information will help tracking down those areas which will get rasterized for whatever reason. Just a little "show more" button which leads to the appropriate information in the export menu directly under "some areas will get rasterized" would help.

Hi, as I can see, you have made some changes in Paragraph / Character styles. Thank you. They should work as they have to (I didn’t try them yet), but I have some more suggestions about them. Here they are: · Space Before/After in milimeters; · Leading in points (please, do not use Word schema for it); · Paragraph Justification in %, not pixels; · Leading overwrite should be named as “Leading” and moved from “Position and Transform” to “Spacing” instead of existing “Leading”; · in Position and Transform please add “inter word spacing” (or name it as you wish) that will control the amount of space between words; · in Position and Transform please add character shading; · Bullets and Numbering must be added; · Paragraph and Character shading and framing must be added; · Paragraph Rules must be added; · as I can see Space Before acts the same as in Quark and InDesign. PLEASE, PLEASE, add “first patagraph override” (or something like that) which will enable to move the paragraph down for a certain amount of space because there are situations when this is needed. Like in novels, stories… when a Chapter / Title doesn’t start at the top of the margin.

Photo automatically convert text to bitmap to apply this filter. Is it possible to make it to work with editable text? Is it possible to include it in Designer? Photoshop's "Warp Text" would be nice to be included in both apps, too.

I'm really new to Vector Graphics as a whole. I've never used Illustrator and Affinity Designer is my first time working with Vector Graphics. So I have a question but I'm worried that I'm going to word it incorrectly. I thought that one of the key features of Vector Graphics is that they scale up and down without issue. However when I design some things when I scale it down it doesn't seem to keep the ratio of the line thicknesses. Going to try to word this as best as I can. So for example, I made a large vector image of a semi truck. I used 5pt for the line thickness on a few parts, and I set some parts to 3d and set them around 15pts. So when I try to reduce it to lets say 1/4 of its original size I thought that the software would keep the ratios, but it keeps those points the same so then I have to go through and change each piece separately to keep them from looking off. Like 15pts on the 3d looks fine when it's big, but it looks really balloon like when it goes down to 1/4 of the size. So my question is, is there an option in the software that will smartly scale down the line thickness and 3D pts and gradient effects? If not that's fine, I'm not trying to complain I just know there are things I don't fully understand about the software and am wondering if I'm missing something. -
Hello, I'm a web developer and somewhat of a beginner using design software. I have no problem extracting assets to use in development but actually creating things is new for me. Anyway, I'd like to create a series of icons or illustrations in an 8-bit pixel style. I'd like them to be vector based though so I can scale them in size easily. I have both Designer & Photo for Mac and am attempting it in Designer. I want to know if I'm going about this correctly. I started by creating a 500px x 500px artboard and set grid lines to be every 20px so that I have a grid of 25 x 25 squares. I created a 20px x 20px square layer for each section of the grid an duplicated them over and over until I had 625 of them covering the whole board. I filled them with various colors and had a large background layer behind the individual square as well. When I removed the grid lines though I noticed that the individual squares didn't seem to line up correctly even though they were snapping to my grid lines. It looks like the sample I attached. What should I do differently to create these square pixel illustrations? I'd like to be able to export to SVG as well.

Hi, I often need to make multiple versions of the same overall design, usually consisting of an image with labels, shapes and assorted other markup. It would be very convenient if AD had a way to replace an existing image, attempting as much as possible to match the scale used in the document. Currently I need to open each image separately, match the scale manually and then delete the old image. Cheers Oliver.

Hello! I have been having some issues with Affinity Designer lately and wanted to reinstall the software. Can I just uninstall like normal or do I have to unregister the software before uninstalling to be able to reinstall it? Thanks -
I'm moving over from Illustrator (so far so good) but I'm having issues working with moving/scaling masks and their content. I can create a mask, resize and reposition the mask over the fixed content, but I'd also like the ability to resize/reposition the content without affecting the mask. It would be the same as pasting the object into the mask shape (allowing easy repositioning/scaling of the content) - but with paste inside, you can't easily edit the "mask" shape without affecting the content as well. I work with photos and want to mask out portions but still be able to move/scale the photo and also the mask. In Illustrator, you just click on the object and then can choose to edit the contents or the mask path, and I'm looking for something similar. Am I missing something, or is this not possible in Designer (without releasing the mask, changing content and then reapplying the mask which is a pain and makes it harder to do right as the mask shape blocks the content below)? -
One (simple?) thing I'd love to see is the ability to create a shape (rectangle, circle etc) with specified dimensions. In Illustrator, you can click with the appropriate tool and it then asks for a width/height or radius and creates it at the spot you clicked. To do the same in Designer, you have to drag out a shape and then edit its dimensions in the Transform panel which means more steps.

Can anyone give me any tips on how to achieve lines similar to the style done in the show 'Ed Edd n Eddy'?The line widths are all over the place. Would this be done with a specific brush or by manually altering the line widths?

Hello and a Merry Christmas to all in the Forum, I've been trying to find a good workflow for using Affinity Designer in my projects. I am fascinated by the embedded documents feature. Saw a couple of videos of how to live edit documents in documents but I want to do something different. I want to create a document with different artbords and place/embbed/link (?) this document in SEVERAL other documents. (It's UX Design - each artbord presents a different screenshot and the other documents are Usage Mockups, Adds and a User-Manual) Then I want to modify the First Document (UX-Artboards) and then make the other documents update to these changes. Can't find the button. Or do I have to use "replace" each and every time?
