  1. Applying a live perspective filter to a symbol in Affinity Photo causes Affinity Designer to crash upon opening the file in question. However, you can still open said file with Affinity Photo. Steps to create the issue: Create an Affinity Designer document. Create a later with some sublayers and make that top layer a symbol. Save the file. Open the saved file with Affinity Photo and apply a live perspective filter to the symbol. Save the file. Try to open the file with Affinity Designer and it will immediately crash. I have attached a file that is in the state after completing step 3 above. test.afdesign
  2. What do you think about a gradient that uses steps and symbol instances instead of colour/alpha values? Basic settings would be: x distance, y distance. Each with the basic gradient controller the apps already have. At its most basic it would serve screen printers well by having circles go from scale 100% to scale 0% with the same control as the gradient tool. A sibling if you will. For replication it could have a drag well to drag symbols and other objects into. At its other end the behaviour along the gradient modifier could be scriptable. As an example: Scale instance object down from 80% to 20% but stop scaling the outline at 50%. Symbols instanced along a controllable path would be a great addition even without the scripting for most users.
  3. I love the symbols functionality but it's horrible to replace existing objects with symbols. I'm often creating graphs in R exported as SVG then I use Designer to layout, resize, ect for a final product. For example, I can export a scatterplot from R. Say I want to resize all the points and rotate them. Before symbols I would have to adjust each individual point. Symbols help because you can make adjustments to theoretically one point once all the symbols are created. Recently, I've been manually replacing each point with its "symbol" version but this also takes a long time and requires checking the coordinates every time. It would be fantastic if you could convert basic objects, like rectangles, lines, ect to an existing symbol. It might require checking that the object and symbol are actually the same except position or fitting the symbol to the object's dimensions. But since I'm replacing matching objects, this is never a problem for me. This feature would help me a ton. I have actually spent hours replacing simple objects with symbols because I knew I needed all the objects to match but didn't know the exact specifications beforehand to change each object individually.
  4. I am working on an UX Design and created a symbol roughly translated into "Background-Frame" that is used across several UX Mockup Screenshots. I also created a bunch of Button-Symbols like "add", "edit", "settings". I now realized that the "settings" button should always be at the exact same spot in the frame so I thought - ok - let's move it into the "Background-Frame" symbol by dragging the "settings" symbol into "Background-Frame" symbol in the layer panel. While that works this action is not synced into the other "Background-Frame" instances. Yes - "Sync" is on for symbols. Dragging a regular rectangle into the symbol works just fine. It seems to be a bug that is triggered when symbols are dragged into symbols. Is this something that will get fixed eventually? Symbols within symbols are quite cool!
  5. I'm trying to use the Symbols feature, however I can't find how to switch on the symbols panel that I see on video tutorials. Any help please?
  6. Hello guys! I want to align an object or objects (be shapes, symbols, etc) along a path. Something like dragging my object over a curve and have it snap on it on the object's active anchor point, or the closest point in the bounding box. But I can't figure it out. Is this even possible? I tried with "snap to object geometry" but it doesn't do what I want to achieve, or I can't find a way to make it happen. Any suggestions? Many thanks!
  7. In this short tutorial I'll will show you how to create an Affinity Designer template with nested symbols to draw snowflakes, ice crystals and other interesting things in all Affinity products. The content of this tutorial isn't new but I think at this time of year a nice idea to draw some nice snowflakes, ice crystals, stars... Have fun to draw your own... and keep on drawin' Norbert
  8. Hello, can someone explain me why there are Asstes and Symbols, wouldn´t it make sense to only have assets with the functionality of symbols? Best regards Nod
  9. Is it possible to have text objects as symbols? Like if I type out display text and then make that a symbol? Subsequently I'd change it one time and then all copies of the symbols would update.

    Snowflakes

I'm loving the symbols. The symmetry is extremely useful and working with the objects in a symbol is easy. My snowflake is based on a 24 point star and 1 symbol duplicated onto every other point, making it simple to create a snowflake with the pen tool. The symmetry is brilliant and works with everything I've thrown at it from quick shapes and brushwork to things I'd painted in pixels - though the program did crash constantly when I tried to move a circular design that was probably a very large file size because of all the jpg images in it. No work was lost, though, it was all recovered.
  11. I don't use symbols very often because I seem to always run into a problem. Today I figured I'd give them a try in a new project. Can anyone tell me what caused my one symbol to be different from the rest? My steps were: 1 I created one symbol, sort of the shape of an eyelid. 2. Copied that symbol to create a row, then a second row. Using cmd C and cmd V 3. Then the two rows were copied many times. Using cmd J 4. After about 20 rows were created this way I changed one symbol by duplicating (cmd C and cmd V) a layer in the symbol and modifying the original layer to add sort of an eye shape under the eyelid The sync button was never touched during this process. All symbols were modified exactly the same by AD except one in every other row. For some reason it skipped the duplicate step, but did the modifying step. Would the orange symbol marker show if the layer had been modified? The file is attached if anyone can figure how this happens I would be most grateful. I just copied the missing layer from a good symbol into the defective symbol and AD did add the layer to that symbol without adding it to the rest of the symbols. The sync button is still highlighted, shouldn't it have affected all symbols? When I did step 4 above, all symbols were affected. I am so confused! Test.afdesign
  12. Hey guys... I've just tested the latest implementation of Symbols in Gravit Designer and even though it's not perfect I think you could "borrow" a few cool ideas like being able to reset each element to its original state from the "master" symbol. Also you can sync only specific properties of an object like color of an icon inside a symbol next to a text layer for example while creating several new symbol instances where you would make the icon bigger or rotated to simulate different states of a button like hover or pressed for example. These features would greatly improve working with symbols specially when it comes to UI design. What do you think guys?
  13. Hi guys, I have the Versions: Photo 1.6.6 Designer 1.6 I have experienced the following issue(s): - when having many instances on stage at some points Affinity Designer stops updating instances .. somehow it creates a duplicate of a symbol WITHOUT adding that one to the Symbols library. - Also something weird happens in Designer when you have maaany instances ... I am talking really many (grouped and with effects on top like gaussian blur) ... imaging needles of a hedgehog ... at some point it just hides some symbols or updates symbols even on hiding one of them ... or/and crashes the file and the app ... so really weird and I hat to flatten all symbols to stop it ... please can you make it more stable even with many instances? And even with huge documents - when jumping to “Photo” from “Designer” and continue editing I really miss the “Symbols library panel” in “Photo” (why is it not existing in PHOTO) but still it somehow understands the symbols even when then going back to “Designer” thanks in advance ... please come back to me for more info if needed I found some similar issue here:
  14. Hello everyone, I have created several symbols in my AD document so I can test different color schemes in UI mockups. However I noticed that when I drag them into the canvas/artboard they do not snap to the pixels grid, becoming very fuzzy. Only if I release them and then start dragging again they will then start to snap to objects and moving pixel by pixel. It would be cool if they snapped to the pixels grid as soon as they are dragged onto the canvas so I can make quick drag and drop without having to realign them later. The three pixel alignment toggles at the top bar are on.

For those with a Skillshare Premium subscription, or who want to sign up, please use this link: http://skl.sh/2z5HyvL The Affinity Designer files I used can be downloaded from within the class. For those who don’t have a Skillshare subscription, here is free access to my class for the first 10 people to take this offer up, or the 8th of November, whichever comes first: http://skl.sh/2zzQNVv
  16. Symbols not staying synchronized, things being duplicated, all without switching off the "Sync" toggle. In the attached screenshot's project file. I only have one symbol, the artboard of which is first in the project list. This is where I've been working, and for the most part things went smoothly. Things started to get wonky when I took the chromosome layer outside the "Inside" (Curves) layer. This hierarchy change caused it to be duplicated (three times?) and out of sync.
  17. Hello, new to Affinity forums but having great success using AF & AD. I am trying to use symbols to update 50+ label backgrounds. Seems like symbols and text work across all labels (love the one shot update!). But trying the same technique with images has no update effect. Hopefully I am doing something wrong. Is this even possible. Thanks Norb
  18. Hey, I was trying to get familiar with symbols and came across following behaviour. If I have an artboard with one or more symbols and duplicate this artboard with ctrl+j, then all symbols are detached in the duplicated version. If I copy the artboard with ctrl+c and paste it with ctrl+v, the symbols stay so this is propably not the intended behaviour for duplicating. This is kinda frustrating, working with symbols and duplicating artboards shouldn't be exclusive to each other. I can recreate this all the time and also with completely new and empty files just for testing.
  19. Hi guys! I played a bit more with AF Photo and tried to import files from AF Designer. A look at the screen reveals that on iOS AFP seems to have problems with text within symbols. At least within duplicated ones. In the desktop version everything is fine. It's a minor thing, but it should be mentioned. Cheers!
  20. Maybe I don't understand symbols properly, but I have this situation: Create a symbol that contains several text boxes. The "Sync" button is activated. Move one text box around inside the symbol. Location or size of the text box is never synched. Kind of defies the purpose of using symbols if it only works for shapes. When I change the actual text (content) of the box inside the symbol, that gets synched, but the size and position of the text box inside the symbol doesn't get synched.
  21. Hi! I did not notice if this bug was in previous versions (now I'm using 1.5.3.69), but now when copying the Artboard all Symbols turn into Groups. How i "fix" the problem for now: 1) I copy artboard 2) Delete everything from it 3) Copy all objects from the previous artboard. In this case, the Symbols do not turn into Groups. In screenshot two artboards: Original (with Symbol) and Copy (with Symbols turned into Groups)
  22. In this tutorial I will demonstrate how to create a DVD cover mockup in Affinity Designer 1.5.5. Tutorial on my YouTube channel Keep on drawin' Norbert
  23. To reproduce on Affinity Designer 1.5.3.69, as well as 1.6.0.81 (Beta): Place a symbol with child curves, creating it if necessary. In Symbols, disable Sync Select and move or scale a curve (as a single object) Then observe: The orange line in the left margin of the Layers panel fails to update, remaing solid, instead of turning into the expected dashed line. The tooltips update correctly, showing "Transform / Constraints" has become unlinked as expected. Other symbol instances update correctly (e.g. if Sync is re-enabled, editing unlinked attributes won't alter other symbols, and editing linked attributes will.) Things that will cause the margin to update: Modifying fill or stroke properties Saving and reloading the document Collapsing and reopening the parent object Things that will not cause the margin to update, despite unlinking the attribute: Moving, scaling, or rotating the whole child curve (not the parent) with the move tool Modifying nodes of the path (repositioning them, modifying their curves, using the "Convert To Sharp/Smooth/Smart" options) Undoing/redoing any of the above, even if that causes the child to become fully linked, or become unlinked. Additionally, I've somehow managed to save a document which, even when opened, incorrectly thinks that the Curves of the object are unlinked (both in the margin and in the tooltip) - even when creating entirely new instances via the symbols dialog. This also appears to be a UI bug: If I create multiple instances of the symbol and edit it's curve, it updates in all instances. I've attached that file as I don't have good reproduction steps for that issue specifically. symbols linked attributes bug.afdesign
  24. I have created a page with a grid of listings (3 × 4). Each listing has a title text frame, an image (masked), a body text frame, and a couple of colour panels, all grouped together. The intention was to create a mock-up for a client, who would be able to edit the text and images herself as needed. To speed up the design process I combined the listing elements into a single symbol, then duplicated it to fill the grid. This meant I could alter the design and immediately see my changes reflected across the whole grid. It worked very well. However, now we’re having trouble detaching each instance of the listing from the symbol. I tried selecting all the placed symbols and selecting Detach from the Symbols panel. This appeared to work, as the instance names in the Layers panel all changed from (Symbol) to (Group) and lost the orange lines to the left of the layer thumbnails. However, nine of the twelve instances are still synchronised, and update if I change one of them. Furthermore, the update is only visible after a zoom change, so it’s not obvious immediately that they have all changed. The other three instances can be edited independently. Even deleting the symbol from the Symbols panel doesn’t fix the issue. I also noticed that the symbols didn’t respond to the “Bring to front” command among themselves. If I had a symbol instance at the bottom of the layer stack and pressed Ctrl+Shift+] the symbol would come forward to the bottom of the stack of symbols. I could move it forward by pressing Ctrl+] to move it one layer at a time. After Detaching them they behave as expected, so Ctrl+Shift+] brings them all the way to the top of the layer stack. I am using AD 1.5.3.69 on Windows 10. I have attached the file in question, after all symbols have been detached. I have replaced most of the text with letters and numbers to indicate which are updating together. Action_Properties_Out_of_Africa_ad_2.afdesign
  25. When I'm working on large app designs, it tends to get a lot of symbols. It would be nice to have a similar feature as on sketch, where the symbols are on a separate page. I believe this would make it easier to edit and see whats included in a symbol and not. you could then have separate pages for different states in the app, and different symbol pages for them as well.
