  1. Hello, I recently purchased Serif Affinity Photo. I noticed that the layer mask is not working properly. Whenever I try to paint with black, no effect is seen. When I invert the mask and try to paint with white, nothing happens. I have NOT ticked " protect alpha" in the context bar, and there seems to be some effect only when mask is revealed by pressing 'alt' and blending mode is changed to 'soft light'. Obviously the image is not seen and mask cannot be accurate. Please help. I am using widows 10 home eddition and latest version of Affinity Photo, 1.7
  2. I have installed 1.7 but straight away I have hit an issue - With just the background pixel layer I add a brightness and contrast adjustment layer, I then highlight the adjustment in the layers panel and select a brush to paint out the effect using the paintbrush set to black and nothing happens. I have tried it on the last beta version an it works. This also used to work on 1.6 which has been overwritten I have reinstalled 1.7 from a fresh download but the same thing happens! Windows 10 Version 1809
  3. There is a repeating wish that people would like to use the full scale of editing tools on masks, and handle them as grayscale layers. They are usually told that masks only have the alpha channel, and they are mistaken to think that values of alpha are considered shades of gray. I think this is not the full story. One can use a regular pixel layer as mask, and the alpha channel (transparency) of the pixel layer will be used for masking, while ignoring the RGB channels of it. Furthermore it is possible to put a live Channel mixer adjustment on top of a pixel layer which makes it transparent based on it's luminosity. Combine these two tricks, you get a mask, where you can do every aspect of grayscale editing. Here are the steps: You have pixel layer A you would like to mask, and pixel layer M you would like to use as mask. You nest a Channel Mixer adjustment inside M, choose LAB channels, Alpha channel, make contribution of input Alpha 0, and contribution of input Lightness 100% into Alpha. Layer M should be above layer A. Right-click layer M, and choose Mask to Below. Bam, you have a mask pixel layer to do any edits and it's luminosity is used for masking. (beware of a GUI limitation that nested children of masks are not shown on the layers panel) What do you think?
  4. Hi all, Is there a way to revert a layer that has been converted to mask using Rasterize to Mask into a normal layer? Cheers, Juan
  5. Hello everyone ! Hello Team ! Well, i just want to make this request/suggestion that i believe will be of great interest for many in this community. We love affinity Photo a lot but still there are point we often disagree with and tends to make use of other tools but we end up lose a lot of time and some time lose it all. Among those so much wanted features i notice the precious Skin Tone Fine tuning. Well, there are tons of methods that we can use to fine tune our skin tone but when looking closely they are intended for Pro or peoples who have considerable experience with Photo software, but when it comes to newbie ... they just lose it all. So i propose a New Skin Tone Fine Tune - Live filter to be implemented; that live filter must allow us to work fast on skin tone applying quick and auto mask to the subject skin so we can work on it. A bit more ? Well, I suggest this : - an Auto detection of skin tone to be implemented the second we select that filter then a quick mask applied, allowing us to fine tune the mask because skin also share the same color as background and environment. - After mask is okay then we can play with the sliders few of them can be : Smoothing, Brilliance, Vibrance, clarity, sharpening, blemish correction and maybe Hue (for those playing the Hulk stuff) ... do not forget to add a color/picking tool to allow average color picking (kind of manual method for those wanting to select precise areas or ranges) - All this should happen in live mode so we see in real-time what we do and how is the output - When all necessary tuning are done, just click apply Making this a Live filter is a plus that will enable us to come back to it tuning again and again thus increasing the interest Newbie and learners (and even Pro) may have about Affinity Photo. Believe this: the day you will offers us such quick way of working a lot of people will be at peace. Please do not remove or delete the actual way of doing the same job as many people like to do things manually so they have to be satisfied. May another one in this forum fine tune this suggestion for the good. Blessings until this is implemented for the Good of Photography.
  6. It would be great if Affinity apps introduced Layer Effects (FX) masks, initially only one master mask for all effects, and perhaps even better, individual masks also available for each effect. Thanks for your consideration and all you do. Affinity apps are awesome!
  7. If I am applying "high pass filter" and want to mask certain content from the effect of the filter, I invert the mask but the Icon of the filter does not "black out" when I apply "Invert" by presing "Ctrl+I" , however the effect of inversion is visible on the picture. Now If I pick the white brush and paint some areas to reveal the effect of the mask ... nothing happens. What is going wrong here? Snapshot of applied filter, brush color icon and Brush selected attached as JPEG files
  8. I have two curve layer adjustments for my dodge and burning retouch work on AP for my iPad Pro. I’d like to select a section of the mask and add a Gaussian blur. Is this possible? If so, how do I do this? I new to AP but a Photoshop veteran looking for an iPad alternative. Thank you so much in advance.
  9. Trying to replicate the process (link) to blur (bokeh) an image background and use a mask to retain sharpness of foreground. Desktop version seems to work fine. Ipad version mask requires precise tracing of foreground vs the general masking (black) and having image show properly per the desktop version. How can the ipad version behave like desktop version? Using an Ipad Air2. Does Affinity Photo run differently on iPad Pro?
  10. Hi, I want to resize a layer mask I have created before by dragging an image-layer below. The mask layer is just a vector rectangle. When selecting and scaling the mask layer I always scale the masked image as well – and that's what I don't want. The only ways to achieve that seems to be dragging out the image of the mask layer... but I hope that there's a more effective way.?.
  11. Okay ! here comes the proposition or question. I've noticed everything or all tone map we apply to a pixel layer (let's say i merged visible and decided to apply tone map to it) that operation is still destructive. I mean, tone mapping is very helpful but would be great if it become non-destructive. Okay maybe i'm missing a way to do that but i always : merged visible and applied tone mapping from that thus preserving the other layers ! if there is a way to tone map non-destructively please let me know if not yet then please Serif, make it happen. Blessings !
  12. This should be so easy but can't seem to figure it out. I am trying to use designer to create a graphic larger than a single sheet of printable sized paper. Print the graphic and tape it together for a leather cutting template. the graphic would cover 4 A4 sized sheets of paper so I setup 4 artboards sized at A4. I draw my image below to scale and I believe I should be able to "Clip" the image 4 times and drag the clipped regions up to the artboards for printing and assembly. This is at least how I believe it should work but can't seem to figure it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I use this software only for creating my leather templates and now my templates are getting bigger and I am stuck. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated as I have exhausted my web searching on this matter. Thanks
  13. Windows 10, Designer 1.6.5.123 (also happens with the 1.7.0.178 Beta but that's by-the-by). I was experimenting with shapes and noticed something strange, see attached image. The image shows three different ways of doing the same thing (I've also attached the afdesign file). On the left I have: * a black rounded rectangle with a white triangle inside it at the bottom-right; * the same as above but rotated and made smaller. In the middle I have: * a black rounded rectangle, a copy of the same rectangle as a mask for a white triangle at the bottom-right; * the same as above but rotated and made smaller. On the right I have tried to use compound layers but got the same result. I can't seem to get rid of the very thin black line around the shapes. Is this a bug, or am I doing something wrong, or is this just expected because of how vectors work? Is there a way I can stop this from happening without 'cutting' the shapes up (or making the black rectangles ever-so-slightly smaller)? lines around shapes.afdesign
  14. Hello, Is there a way to create a luminescence mask similar to what is possible in photoshop? Thanks
  15. Hi I'd like to know how to paint a vector shape as shown in the attached image, the hatched area? I know how to switch to pixelpersona to paint within a vector shape (circle, rectangle, triangle...), but failed to figure out how to paint a hollow circle ( a ring zone) ... In the attached image, I used the outer circle as mask to paint, however it will also paint into the inner smaller ring, yes, I can use eraser to carefully erase it off... but is there a way I can paint "freely" directly in this ring area? or is there a way to set up a mask for the eraser to ease the job? Thank you!
  16. If I'm editing a mask with a brush, then I would expect the blend modes to work like they do when I'm normally painting a layer. Examples include: Brush with White Color and Overlay Blend Mode should help fill in white parts of the mask, without revealing/coloring parts that are already black. Brush with Black Color and Overlay Blend Mode should help fill in black parts of the mask, without hiding/coloring parts that are already white. Works best with a low flow For clarity, these do what I expect if I just paint with black and white on a normal pixel layer. But none of the blend modes do anything when painting on a mask.
  17. In a triangle frame (or any other shape) it would be nice to use Place Image from the menu. I know that masking is possible from the Layer-menu
  18. Is it possible to select by saturation level? I'm particularly thinking of using saturation masking (if it can be done).
  19. Please forgive me if I'm missing something in the videos, etc but I haven't been able to find what I'm looking for. I'm new to Affinity Photo (on my 12" iPad Pro), and am looking to accomplish something I'm used to doing in Photoshop. Specifically, in my workflow it's common for me to stack two images, create a layer mask on the top one, then use a brush to add the lower image but not 100%. The brush in Photoshop would typically be set at 30% with a soft edge so that the additions are not all one layer of the other, but really a blend of the two. Using a brush to accomplish this is nice because it lets me build up some areas while leaving others untouched. I've tried the same technique in Affinity, but masking seems to be an all or nothing thing here. Either an element is masked or it's not. An example of the style I’m looking for would be Procreate’s layer mask functionality. There I can use a brush set at 30% opacity and brush in what I want. However, I’d rather do it all in Affinity. For the record, if you are familiar with Trey Ratcliff's HDR tutorials, this is the technique he walks people through. I'm trying to replicate it in Affinity. Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide!
  20. When I try to create a slice from a group that has something masked inside it, the size of the slice is determined by the size of the unmasked content. However to me it seems more logical to have the slice the same size as the visible content (the way it is masked). Is there a way to make the size of the slice respect the actual visible content?
  21. Hi How copy pixels information, to mask or alpha channle. For example, I need copy all pixels from the layer 1, and paste in the layer 2 alpha, or paste in the layer 2 mask. I'm stuck in this point Thanks!
  22. Hi all Affinity Photo friends, two questions: Is there something like a Clipping Mask as in Photoshop? It seems to be, that the tweaking made in Effects tab has zero effect on e.g. Masks and Adjustment Layers. In case I don't do something wrong or just couldn't figure out how to do it: This must be urgently added... Need to blur a mask non destructively all the time. If there is a possibility, please let me know, many thanks in advance. Appreciate any reply!
  23. Is there any way to toggle the default layer mask of adjustment layer in Affinity Photo?
  24. Hi. When I select a layer and click on the layer mask icon, it creates a layer mask above and separately from that first layer. I have to manually drag it underneath the layer I meant to mask. Why is not automatically apply it to the layer I've selected? It should work exactly that way, like in photoshop or in any online Affinity tutorial, but not for me.
  25. Hello everyone, I'm trying to create some custom brushes to use when painting over masking layers, but I cannot achieve my desired result. This is the new Image Brush I made (white on transparent background): The layer setup: What I want to use this for is adding/subtracting from a mask, but the transparency is not ignored in the process, resulting in something like this when adding to the mask: As you can see the transparency acts on the mask layer as an eraser (I'm using the pixel brush), and the only thing that I want to do and can do is removing from the mask while holding down CTRL (to erase). Is there a setting, or color combination in the brush image that I can use in order to have the desired effect of only adding or subtracting the brush shape, ignoring the rest of the image? Thanks in advance for any help! Cheers
