4dimage got a reaction from Keithscatch in Machine Learning: Object Selection Tool
Oh dear 😉
Actually a great feature. But a few extra laps on the training track are still required. The three real-life examples were already cut out on white or transparency. So the tool should be able to recognize the shapes even better. Product shots like these are part of everyday layout work.

4dimage got a reaction from Sean P in Publisher beta 2.6.0.2831 windows: export to DWG, DXF fail with error or crash
Hi,
same .afpub test file as above.
In 2.6.0.2861 beta the method file -> export preview/save now work in Publisher and Designer as expected. But Designer still crashes when trying to export via a slice as DWG or DXF.

4dimage got a reaction from Patrick Connor in Designer beta 2.6.0.2831 windows: artboard with bleed exports only partially in bitmap formats
Hi,
while testing the fixes concerning the bleed export in different vector and bitmap formats i found the following:
When using "normal" .afdesign document with a single page (or open an .afpub), and use file -> export the bleed is now rendered as expected on all four sides 😀. Thanks for that fix!
Buit if i use a document with an artboard and bleed instead, the bleed content on the right and bottom side is cut off partially when choosing a bitmap format. The vector formats show the bleed on all four sides as expected.
Here is my test document:

4dimage reacted to NotMyFault in Live filter perspective delivers miserable results
Hi,
the Quality is limited to
extreme factor of downsizing the remaining number of pixels in the document resolution. i would recommend to take a 2 step approach
resize the layer with logo by move tool to the rough size of the destination add the perspective filter only for the final perspective distortion, not for downsizing. this results in better quality.
When downsizing the layer by perspective filter, the resample method uses one single pixels from the original sized layer to represent the destination pixel which covers hundreds of source pixels. Otherwise, it uses already averaged (smoothed) color information giving a far better smoothed result.

Auto Apply (Colour Panel) Colour Picker to Selection
Previously when you used the Colour Picker available from the Colour or Stroke Panel it would first add the picked colour to the well next to the picker and then you would be required to apply the colour manually by clicking the well.
We are now changing this to automatically apply the picked colour to the selected object, so you’re no longer required to select the colour well.
If you would prefer not to apply the selected colour (i.e the previous behaviour) you can hold Alt down whilst picking the colour (note this Alt behaviour is currently only available on Windows).

4dimage reacted to Patrick Connor in Pencil, Pen and Node Tool improvements
Apps: Designer
Platforms: macOS, Windows and iPad
Pencil Tool improvements
Affinity Designer’s Pencil Tool now includes several new options on its context toolbar.
Auto Close
Up to 2.6, we’ve only offered a proximity-based auto-closing option when making a closed shape from a pencil curve. As a reminder, a red ‘dog bone’ indicator popped up when the active end of a pencil curve approached the stroke’s starting point. This design aid suggested that the curve could be closed by clicking.
In 2.6, we’ve now introduced an Auto Close pop-up menu that offer a choice of options:
Off - the curve is never closed. Near - the curve is closed when end points approach each other (this is as per the [2.6 release; the ‘dog bone’ indicator still shows). Far - similar to Near but the distance between end points is greater. Always - the curve is always closed irrespective of distance between end points.
Auto close behaviours when using the Pencil Tool: Off (A), Near (B), Far (C) and Always (D).
Smoothness
Smoothness can be applied in advance of pencil drawing or to pencil curves you’ve just drawn. By design, further smoothing is no longer possible once the curve is deselected.
The feature works by repositioning, adding or removing nodes on the curve to affect the smoothing results. You can decrease or increase smoothing by dragging the slider left or right from the default value (50%), respectively; nodes are removed or added as a result.
Note that this is not to be confused with the smoothing you’ll see when using the Stabiliser option on the context toolbar. It would be beneficial to switch this off while testing Smoothness.
Use line style
Prior to 2.6, the Pencil Tool presented the Use fill option as a check box on its context toolbar. This is now presented as an icon, and is accompanied by a new Use line style option, also an icon. This lets you adopt the currently set stroke properties (width, dot/dash, pressure) you have currently set up on the Stroke panel for new pencil strokes.
Applying Use line style as you draw a pencil stroke.
Pen Tool improvements
The Pen Tool also benefits from the new Use line style option described above.
Node Tool improvements
Converting nodes from Sharp to Smooth requires a visit to the Node Tool context toolbar or right-click menu. In 2.6, Affinity now lets you double-click (or alt-click) a node to cycle between these node types, keeping you more focused on the curve.
As another addition, either control handle on a Bézier curve’s node can be removed by double-clicking on its handle; the associated node becomes a sharp (cusp) corner

I haven't used these machine learning models yet, but I just wanted to say how nice a surprise it was to see that these were optional downloads, and not simply bundled into the existing applications. I really appreciate Serif giving creatives the respect to choose whether or not they want to integrate any machine learning into their workflows.
Also, kudos for side-stepping the blanket AI hype train and calling these 'Machine Learning Models', which is not only more accurate, but also helps to frame the discussion in a much more informed manner.

Multiple Pages Feature
Apps: Affinity Publisher
Platforms: All
IMPORTANT. PLEASE READ FIRST
The implementation of this feature (and the many associated improvements listed at the bottom of the post) involved a rewrite of much of the existing page, spread and master code, as such 2.6.0 cannot support backward compatibility to 2.5 for page operations. Any undo history saved with a document that was created in 2.5.5 or earlier, which involves page or spread manipulation, will be truncated. You won't be able to undo back past the last page operation you did. If your 2.5.x document was saved with history and it includes any page action you will be told when you open in 2.6.0 that the history has been truncated. Any changes made using 2.6 will save and load their history going forward, and this restriction only relates to page functions whose history was created in earlier versions. Additionally you should take particular care to backup your old documents when trying them out in the new beta in case there are bugs converting from the old file structure to the new.
Multi-page spreads
Spreads can now contain more than two pages, making it easy to create trifold, gatefold, accordion fold and other page arrangements.
A new option when adding pages
When adding pages to a document, the new Spread Wrapping setting determines how existing pages flow to accommodate the newly added pages.
Exactly how pages are arranged depends on the number of pages added and where they are inserted.
To show how the setting’s three options work, we’ll start with two facing pages and show the resulting page arrangement you’ll see when inserting two new pages in the middle of the existing spread and after the existing spread’s last page.
In the illustrations below, grey pages are the existing pages, and green pages are the newly added pages.
To help you confirm the spine’s position within any spread, look for small notches that protrude above and below the page thumbnails. You’ll see this on the updated Pages Panel in the beta app, too.
Flow Pages reflows other pages just like you’re used to in earlier versions of Affinity Publisher.
(A) The result of using Flow Pages to add two pages after the existing spread.
(B) The result of using Flow Pages to add two pages in the middle of the existing spread.
Extend Spread literally extends the spread at your specified position. No other spreads are affected.
(A) The result of using Extend Spread to add two pages after the existing spread.
(B) The result of using Extend Spread to add two pages in the middle of the existing spread.
New Spread always creates a new spread (or spreads) containing new pages, and if the insertion point is within an existing spread, that spread’s pages will be broken apart into two separate spreads.
(A) The result of using New Spread to add two pages after the existing spread.
(B) The result of using New Spread to add two pages in the middle of the existing spread.
Where an existing spread is split, two ‘ghost’ pages are shown opposite the original pages. These are fainter in appearance to indicate your pages no longer conform to the document setup. Affinity Publisher creates the exact number of pages you’ve instructed it to add; it’s left to you to resolve such deviations.
Example: Creating a gatefold
Here’s how you could use the Extend Spread option to create a gatefold. Start with a two-page spread like this one:
On the Pages Panel, select Add Pages, apply the following settings on the dialog, then select OK:
Number of Pages: 2 Insert: After Page: 2 (our right page’s number) Spread wrapping: Extend Spread The Pages Panel should now show a four-page spread, with the spine shown between the original pages, which are the two on the left.
On the panel’s preferences menu, disable Page move options > Reflow Pages. This allows you to drag and drop page thumbnails without Affinity Publisher automatically reflowing other pages.
Drag the rightmost of the four pages to the left of the spread. Drop it when you see a blue line at the edge of the leftmost page.
While dragging, observe that we’ve introduced various new cursors that indicate the result to expect if you were to drop the thumbnail at various positions.
The dragged page is moved to the left of the spread, giving us a gatefold arrangement.
Another way of making this would be to make a four-page master. On the Pages Panel, select Add Master, apply the following settings on the dialog, then select OK:
Page Layout: Facing Page Count: 4 Spine Location: After Page: 2 You can then make a new four-page spread by dragging the master thumbnail from the top half of the panel to the bottom.
You can also convert an existing two-page spread, right click on a spread and select Apply Master, choose your 4 page master and set Conform Pages to Size & Count and select OK. The spread will be converted from two pages to four pages.
New option when applying a Master to fully conform the target spread to the master's page count and layout
When applying a master page, you can now choose “Size & Count” which will ensure the number of pages of the spread it is being applied to will match the master page

4dimage reacted to postmadesign in Designer: Show elements in Bleed Area
I love to work with artboards in Designer to create Flyers and other design elements all in one document. Designer also offers Bleed for artboards, which is great when creating PDFs for printing.
One thing is a bit annoying though: Designer will not show the elements within the bleed area. It will indicate the bleed edges, but not show anything outside of the artboard but within the bleed area. This sometimes makes it hard to see how the final output will look like. Perhaps adding an option to the viewing settings to enable this? Thanks!

For that you need to use Art Text
Attached is an Affinity document showing just Art Text layers with the appropriate decorations applied to them
Can (probably) also be done using the Text Frame panel in Publisher but more fun using decorations
Everything is configurable on the one layer
E.g.
Colours
Space to left of letters
Space to right of letters
Corner roundness
You would just need to resize them to the sizes you need and save as assets

4dimage reacted to C.A.Pelton in Print Production needs Overprint, and Color (Ink) Separation
I would like to chime in on this as well. I currently cannot use Affinity Designer for the commercial work I do. Though I love the tools and the non-destructive vector effects.
I am a Prepress Technician/Graphic Designer and all our files need to be prepared with the correct overprints and verifiable color separations. This is the first step in the Quality control process, and every print company I have worked for does this. Exporting to PDF, (which is not always accurate) is a workaround, which simply adds another step to the process,
Not to mention, if you are going to pay the sub for Acrobat, you might as well pay the sub for Illustrator. Acrobat should not be a solution for this issue.

Thank you for taking the time to expose this!
It also concerns keen graphic designers who like to check the files they send to printers.
As you said:
Today, this control can only be done with additional software, once the work has been exported as a PDF.
It would be much more convenient to be able to check the quality of our work at any stage of the design process.

4dimage reacted to jaxfh in Print Production needs Overprint, and Color (Ink) Separation
Hello fellow Developers,
I trust everyone's having a productive coding day. I wanted to bring to light a topic that's incredibly relevant in the realm of Professional Print Production – the importance of Overprint Simulation and Color Separation, and why we need to integrate these features into the next version of Affinity Publisher and Designer.
The world of print production is complex, blending an intricate mix of color science, material properties, and digital-to-physical rendering. Overprint Simulation and color separation are two pivotal elements in this process, largely overlooked in many design software, including ours.
Overprint Simulation is the digital process of replicating the effect of printing one color on top of another. It's used to anticipate and prevent gaps or 'white halos' from appearing between colors due to misalignment - a common issue in print production. Overprint Simulation ensures clean, precise printing, particularly around intricate graphics and texts. It also facilitates unique color blending options that can be indispensable for graphic designers.
Color Separation, on the other hand, is the process of decomposing a graphic or image into the primary print colors – Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key (Black), collectively known as CMYK. This is fundamental in transforming digital designs into tangible print products. The precision and accuracy of color separation directly influence the quality of the final printed piece, making this an essential tool for professional designers and publishers.
Affinity Publisher and Designer, while powerfully equipped with many other advanced features, lack built-in overprint simulation and color separation functionalities. The absence of these features complicates the print production process and can negatively affect the print output. Our users currently have to depend on other software for these functions, which is far from ideal considering our goal to provide a complete and intuitive solution for professional design and publishing needs.
Implementing these features would significantly enhance the efficacy of Affinity Publisher and Designer for print production. Overprint Simulation controls would offer more control over how colors interact, reducing potential print issues and broadening the creative palette for designers. Robust color separation tools would ensure that designs are print-ready straight from our software, saving time, and reducing the risk of color discrepancies in the final product.
Not only would these features better serve our current user base, but they would also make Affinity Publisher and Designer more competitive in the professional design software market, potentially attracting new customers who primarily work in print.
In conclusion, I urge everyone to consider the significance of overprint simulation and color separation features in our future updates. These are not just bells and whistles – they're fundamental tools for print production. Let's help our users to transform their digital art into printed masterpieces with the accuracy and color fidelity they deserve.

Though, just being able to round the corners of a Text Frame (and having Text Frames in Designer) would solve one the OPs first examples.

4dimage reacted to Meliora spero in Nudge behavior in forum cookie banner
In the UK, using a cookie banner where the "Accept" button is more prominent or visually attractive, like making it green, may be problematic under GDPR and the UK's data protection laws. This practice could be considered "nudge behavior" which tries to influence the user to accept cookies rather than providing a genuine, balanced choice between accepting or rejecting. According to the UK's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), consent must be freely given, and this means making both the "Accept" and "Reject" options equally visible and easy to select.
Highlighting the "Accept" button with colors like green, or using other visual cues to make it more appealing, could undermine the principle of providing an informed and unpressured decision. The ICO advises that cookie consent options should be presented in a way that allows users to make an informed choice without being nudged toward one option(
Best practice would be to ensure that both the "Accept" and "Reject" buttons are equally prominent, in terms of both size and color, to avoid any perception of bias or manipulation. 4dimage got a reaction from lepr in Feature request: automated shapes behind text, custom text strikethrough styles
I regularly have to create newspaper advertisements for special offers. A typical layout construct is the special offer price in a highlighted rectangle or ellipse. There is also a strikethrough price. Creating both under the typical time pressure is very exhausting, as prices often change at the last minute. Then not only the text has to be changed, but also the overall shape and the strikethrough of the normal price. A lot of fine-tuning under time pressure.
The following two extensions would be nice:
1) Custom Strikethrough style
The strikethrough of the normal price could also be achieved with a standard text style. Unfortunately, many customers prefer a diagonal line through (behind) the price, as the numbers are then more legible than with a standard horizontal strikethrough. To achieve this, only a manually drawn path can be used, which then has to be laboriously moved underneath each price, as the length of the line also varies depending on the length of the number string. It would be useful to be able to assign the strikethrough of text as a user-defined style to a text. It would be important to be able to run any colored graphic diagonally over|behind the text, which automatically adjusts to the length of the text when changed. So it's basically an automatic form generation|transformation based on the bounding box of the editable text (typical graphic text for prices).
2) Automated shapes from text
The same applies to a typical box for a special price. This should also be generated automatically from the length and size of the editable text and should be freely designable. Illustrator has a halfway usable approach to this via the Appearance panel. In the example video below, a rectangle with padding is first generated from the bounding box of the editable text, which is then optically transformed in the Y direction. This appearance enables text to be changed quickly without having to change the box behind the text every time. In Illustrator, the appearance can at least be saved as a style and quickly transferred to new texts. This saves so much time, especially when text changes are made at the last minute.
