“Super-fields” would come in super-handy. I wouldn’t consider those any more overwhelming to the user than the way in which custom path names are defined in the Export Persona. So I would suggest that you simply do the following:
Turn the options of the “Display (cross-reference) as …” menu that is available from the Edit Cross-Reference dialog into variables and borrow the user interface from the Path Name Definition flyout in the Export Persona to let us build super-fields in the sense suggested by Paolo T. The user interface and its mechanics are already there. Why not use these things for something else that would be very useful? 😀
 

Yeah the thing with that (and this applies to a few other suggestions) is that our guides - at least as it stands - are not selectable things. This was a deliberate design decision at the beginning, but could be something we review at some stage. The reason that impacts this is that clicking on a guide does not select it (or remove your selection from whatever you currently have selected in your layers panel). Therefore hitting cmd-J will just duplicate your current layer/object selection.

There is other feedback we have had like being able to group guides, or reflecting currently selected guide position in the transform panel for example. All of which would mean switching to making guides selectable which is quite a big fundamental change and isn't something for 2.1.

I should say we also have a different kind of guide feature in our minds for the future - effectively guide layers which would allow the creation of any guides from any objects, and could be manipulated like any other object (grouped, power duplicated, anything else you can think of). But that's probably quite a way off...

Can the Tab to Rename functionality be extended to the Swatches panel perchance?

How complex is to make have a function that can apply Pixel or Vector inside the Compound?

I have some complex shapes that I wish that I could paint inside, but at the moment the Compound Path ignore that, so ended up converting to Curves to apply.

I'm using a lot of Compound Paths to build shapes in many characters,
a way to paint inside or add vector clipping that ignore the Compound -  Would be a nice improvement for the compound functions.

I gave in and joined the beta to test out the Vector Fill Tool (but also very happy to see Brushes finally have their names displayed underneath AND don't get deselected when I modify them on the go)
So the drawing on the left was made in 2.0 with filled in shapes. For the drawing on the right I started off with vector lineart and then used the Vector Fill Tool with a couple of adjustments.
 

 
 
However, I had to convert the lineart into shapes for the Vector Fill tool to properly work. I later figured out it was because most lines didn't overlap so it didn't identify any space to fill in.
 
Would it be possible to include a tolerance slider for cases where the lines are very close but not quite overlapping? Or is that not possible?

Yes I understand what you mean. I think we want to consider this more fully - another aspect of things we want to sort out in future is being able to define the size of assets generally, and fills. And to be able to do it to scale too. e.g. if you had an asset of a plan view of a table, you could say it was 2m long then whatever document you drag it onto it would place it at that size, based on the drawing scale the document is set to. This will also apply to fills - so you could say a fabric texture swatch relates to 10cm x 10cm in real world, then the fill will be added at that real world size if that makes sense.

I understand you are not asking that specifically and probably just want to see in the fill tool what px dimensions the texture tile has been scaled to (and perhaps % scale too) similar to a placed image like below?


But think my point is more that we want to consider this in the round of accounting for scaled assets too so will be something in a future update.

However, one bit of news which might help: we are adding to the new vector flood fill and option to add bitmap fill as non-scaled. So if you have an asset set up at the correct size you want it to be then every shape you add it to will be added at that size, without auto scaling to fit. This will hopefully be in an update in the next week or so so will definitely be worth checking out.

First of all the auto select drop down in move tool which was added to Affinity Photo in V2 has now been added to both Affinity Designer and Affinity Publisher, as requested numerous times from customers. This now allows you to optionally disable the move tool auto selecting objects when you click on them. This can be particularly useful when moving and transforming objects which maybe within designs where you can accidentally select something else, or you are working at a zoom level where it's hard to get the hit zone to drag-move an object. Now if you have an object selected and have auto select turned off you can drag anywhere on your document to move it.
You will see this option as a check box (icon on iPad) to toggle auto-select on or off, followed by a dropdown menu:


The drop down gives you the following options
Default - This is default behaviour, clicking on any objects or groups will select them. Objects / Layers - This will ignore any groups and automatically drill to select any child object you click on. This saves you needing to keep double clicking or cmd-clicking to drill into groups in complex designs.  Groups - This has limited use, but is another option you can choose if you want auto select to only select groups. i.e. if you click on an object which is not part of a group nothing will be selected, if you click on an object which is part of a group the group will be selected. Under (iPad only) - this will toggle your selection through the z-order of the layer stack in the case of objects which are stacked on top of each other. This achieves the same as previously setting the selection target to under (or holding alt). Note:
Now this drop down has been added the previous context toolbar option of "Allow selection to consider items inside of groups" has been removed. This is because that gave the same behaviour as what "Auto Select: Objects" now does from the new drop down. On iPad the previous Selection Target menu has been removed from the move tool context menu as any functionality which was previously possible with those options can be achieved using this new feature.

Cross-references are a field inserted into text that refers to another object or piece of text. If the current document is a chapter of a book, cross-references can refer to objects or text from other chapters.
You can insert a cross-reference by using Text > Cross References > Insert Cross-Reference, or by using the right-click menu on text. If a cross-reference is already selected, these options change to Edit Cross-Reference instead. Either way brings up a panel to set the cross-reference properties. The first group of properties are about the target of the cross-reference. This can either be an existing anchor, or a text paragraph. (If you cross-reference to a paragraph, it will automatically create an anchor at the start of the paragraph.) The second group of properties are about how the cross-reference will be displayed. These include as the target page number, section name, and the content of paragraphs. By using several cross-reference fields you can build up text like, “See footnote 2 on page 12, below”.
The Window > References > Cross-References menu option will display a Studio panel that lists the cross-references from the current document. From here you can go to the cross-reference itself, or its target. (This will open other book chapters if necessary.) You can also update cross-reference text from here — they don’t update automatically.
Settings > Cross-References has options for controlling the text used for showing relative positions “above” and “below” (these will use the language of the text they are in rather than the UI, for support of bilingual documents).

In Windows versions text contrast in settings did not have the range available to macOS versions. Deleting a (shared) category in App A while editing a styles name in App B can crash App B. To access Affinity V2 beta builds, you first need to add the V2 beta entitlement into your account and then you will be given the beta downloads (and Apple TestFlight links for iPad). Please read these instructions for more information and apply to be a beta tester.

It would be nice if it would be fixed but not fully removed. It could be a useful option for those who don't want or can't make the roundtrip to APu's Text Frame panel to add a text frame fill.

I work with Several UI elements and sometimes it kind of pain to rename the layers during the export, mainly when you work with something about 150+ layers.

@Ash I believe you guys could consider adding a Batch Rename,
by selecting the layers and edit them at once.

I think the Export Persona slices should follow the same logic for renaming if possible. Slices are mentally so similar to layers that I want to rename them with the same methods.

Please may the Export Persona:
• Have same Slice Rename menu command/shortcut as Designer Persona

Both Affinity Designer and Affinity Photo now have the option to "Show Special Characters" if required. This is available from the top Text menu on desktop, and via the preview mode drop down on iPad.

As has been requested many times we have now added both the perspective and mesh warp live filters from Affinity Photo into the Pixel Persona of Affinity Designer. You can add one of these live filters from the Layer menu in pixel persona on desktop, or from the + button in the layers panel on iPad (again only when you are in pixel persona).

We understand these are convenient tools to have available from within Designer for occasions where you may wish to distort images, embedded documents, etc. within your designs. It is important to consider that these tools are raster-based filter effects. This means that while you can use them on vectors and text (or elements with mixed vector and pixel data) the output will always be flattened. e.g. if you had some text where you applied a pixel persona live perspective filter, if you export your design as a PDF that element will be rasterised at document resolution.
If you just wish to warp vector outlines you should be using the vector warp group functionality in the Designer Persona (added as a new feature to V2) which will always maintain a true vector result.

The measure tool which was added to Affinity Designer in V2 is now available in both Photo and Publisher. This is not included in the default set of tools when you first run up the app, but you will find it in the list if you go to View -> Customise Tools if you wish to add it to your available tools.

Rename layer has been added to the Layer menu. This has been primarily added from customer requests that it be made possible for a shortcut to be assigned to this function.
In the case of an artboard, you can also now open the rename dialog by double clicking / tapping the artboard name on document.
In addition, for V2 we added the function that if you rename a layer in the Layers panel hitting tab would commit that name and immediately give focus to the next layer's name in the stack to edit (shift-tab to go to the previous layer). Well, as it turned out this was something which only ended up in the Windows version, so in 2.1 this tab functionality in the layers panel is now available in the Mac version too.

When editing a vector warp group, nodes will now snap based on your snapping preferences (if you have snapping turned on). As with nearly all operations in Affinity you can temporarily toggle snapping off while dragging a node by holding Alt.

A new vector flood tool has been added to Affinity Designer. This is denoted by a paint bucket icon in the Tools Panel (on iPad you can find it nested with the gradient fill tool, on Windows it will currently need to be manually added via Customising the Tools Panel).
This tool allows you to automatically fill areas created by overlapping / intersecting shapes and open curves in your document. This tool requires you to make a selection first of the curves / shapes you want the tool to consider. You can then choose a colour from the colour or swatches panel, and tap within any enclosed area to create a new shape with that fill colour. While in the tool you can also drag swatches from the swatches panel onto any area.

There are two insertion modes to this tool you can select from the context toolbar:
Inside. This will attempt to create the new shapes / fills and place them inside existing shapes where possible. In-between. This will break fills and strokes apart in existing shapes, and insert the new fills in-between.  The difference between the two is shown below. 


While using the tool you can hold Cmd (macOS / iPad) or Ctrl (Windows) to make new selections (also combining with Shift to add / remove items from your selection). You can also click-drag the tool to quickly fill many areas all at once, a simple example is shown below with some text:

The tool works with any type of fill - solid colour, gradient or bitmap. The options in the context toolbar for min, max and stretch to fit are relevant only to gradient and bitmap fills, and refers to the method used to scale the fill to the new shape.
For bitmap fills you can select a bitmap fill swatch to use, alternatively you can create bitmap fills on the fly by dragging a texture file or asset directly into the active colour in the toolbar. Below is a video showing that in action with using assets to create bitmap fills:

For bitmap fills if the texture has any transparency then the fill will be added as an additional fill to the shape. This allows for overlay style textures to be easily added on top of an existing colour fill. We will look at a way to make this behaviour optional.
Finally it's also worth pointing out that when you are in the tool you can also drag swatch from your swatches panel directly into any area in your selection, to quickly add multiple different colours to areas without having to select them first.
We would love you to try this new tool out and let us know what you think or if you encounter any bugs or unexpected results.

Hi, as a graphic designer and illustrator, I would be very happy if the new features listed below would be added to all the Affinity programmes.
(1) Different gap width for the vertical and horizontal columns. I know we can come around and set them differently by adding guides manually. But it would be so convenient if we are able to set different gaps for vertical and horizontal columns right in the Guides settings, as we can only set the same gaps for both horizontal and vertical columns at this moment.
(2) Hopefully Affinity can introduce Adobe Illustrator's way to create variable stroke size (please see the picture below). It's more direct and precise than how it works with Affinity programmes now. If this function is available. I'm sure Affinity would be the No.1 programme for all the digital artist (especially the vector art illustrator). Do you agree? (Plus, the live flood colouring would be nice too)
 
 
Hope I'm not asking too much from Affinity as you've already been brilliant to bring us these powerful and competitive software to enhance our work efficiency. Really look forward to seeing more surprise Affinity can bring us in the future. 😄

Suppose I have a path in designer and have used the pressure curve to apply a tapered stroke profile to it, like shown in the attached image. For example, I set the width to 50pt and then taper from 100% to 25%. If I cut the path in the middle, each half has the same overall style as the original, i.e. both have 50pt weight and taper from 100% to 50%. This is not what I’d like. Instead, the split paths should maintain the original visual appearance as the original path. The first path should taper from 100% to 62.5% and the second path from 62.5% to 25%. This would be an extremely desirable feature to have. It should look at where the original curve was split, then split the pressure curve similarly at the same ratio along its length.
Now, I am aware that I could expand the stoke of the original path first, then split it, and this would maintain the visual appearance. However I do not want to do this, for a few reasons. I want to be able to edit the path subsequently, and I need to be able to expand the path after the split (this relates to creating interlacing knot works from self-intersecting curves, by expanding stroke and then using the shape builder).
 
 

Summary: If I have a single self-intersecting curve in Designer (“D” in the attached) and expand the stroke, it produces “E”. The intersections have been erased/joined, however its best to describe. What I’d like it to produce instead is “I”, where the edges of the stroke at the intersections are left alone.
This all arose from my experiments using expand stroke then shape builder to build up interlacing knot work designs. If all the curves are discrete, “A”, then this works great, and produces “C”. However, if any of the curves self-intersect, like “D”, the it fails, because expand stroke doesn’t produce the stroke edges at the intersections. I hope this makes sense.
A fix is to deliberately split the stroke somewhere and then expand the resulting curves. However, there are certain situations where I can’t do this (namely, where I have used a tapered stroke profile) and would really prefer to just expand the one curve directly.
If it was possible to add an option to control how expand stroke behaves at self-intersections, it would be awesome. It could either do the default behaviour, where it simply outlines everything that appears black, or it actually traces the edges of the stroke.
ADDITIONAL: A similar option would also be invaluable for the contour tool!

Now in v2 I have same issue again, where even when my rullers are set to mm, while I'm dragging new slices, I see only px sizes.
Which for me doing with print sizes is worthless since I can't calculate in my head px to mm in any given dpi resolution this would be great to being able to set app-wise measurment to cm and forget it once and forever.





 
Here's also a video which shows inconsistency of sometimes showing the size while dragging a shape tool, while not showing while dragging marquee tool or slice tool. The code is there just make an option to select it's visibility and measurement type for everyone around the world.

I think, the best benefit of using right click to create a copy of dragged object(s) is it is REPEATABLE. While dragging you can create as many copies as you desire by repeating right click. Using Alt/Ctrl method you create just single copy of object(s). If you want another one you have to release and repeat your Alt/Ctrl drag of object(s).

Xara Designer has this way of copying Objects via
the right Mouse Button since 1995. So i am pretty
shure you are not alone.
And to me, this way feels the most natural
to copy Objects that way.
Well most companys just copying Adobe Illustrator's method
of doing that, over and over. Instead of rethinking it.
