Since there's only black and grey, using HSL is certainly fustrating.
Colorizing photos was discussed a lot in the forum, you should find interesting threads like this ones:

I've been doing toy photography a couple of months now,   this is my latest edited in Capture One, focus stacked in Helicon Focus  then composited in Affinity Photo.
Jawa & EG-6 Power Droid made by Hot Toys, I bought aquarium rocks, gravel and some coconut sugar, lighting done with  3x Atomcube Rx1 no flash used.

Also last May the falling pilots were featured again in a magazine. The original project involved medium res photo's but now they are up-scaled to hi-res scans. Which is surprisingly easy in Affinity as long as you use non-destructive layers. Also minor tweaks and colour corrections. So yeah, fallen pilots 2.0

A really nice portrait of a Dutch brother and sister in the 30s. I'm still impressed by the quality of glass negatives.
Also added some comparison shots for inspiration.

Yesterday my work was featured on Affinity's insta account as part of #100days100commissions. It's a great honour to be selected. A great initiative in these uncertain times.

I kinda forgot about this forum but I'll post some more work soon.

Latest one. No filters used at all, it's all brushing. I've been studying the Dutch masters a bit lately, so the goal was to brush in the depth with colour. Pretty happy with this one.

To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands the Dutch Ministry of Defence asked to me colourise some photo's for their magazine. The magazine is all year round available in the stores. Also there's a monthly digital magazine with my work.
Really cool project and very proud of it.

A really, really quick one of my great uncle. Just 3 layers, blue, yellow and red. The source file is very poor, hence the pixelation.

I started publishing the series. Since the pilots all fell between 10 and 15 May. But then, of course, people with more historical knowledge than me pointed out some facts and I found new uniform references. So even though half of them are finished now they still need tweaks here and there. Luckily that's no problem for AF

    Thanks @Alfred
If I may give a tip. Objects have a local colour. But colour fades in shades and highlights. If done correctly it will give more depth. You can take it even a step further to make the dark shade a tad cooler/warmer and the highlight the opposite.
This image has one heavy light source. So the highlights will be bitten out and the shades will go near black (well, not black but colourless).

Hi. Looong time Photoshop user here, my first PS came on floppy's. I still use Adobe professionally at work but I wanted a cheaper photo editor at home. An alternative who isn't bogged down with options I never use / touch. So Affinity it was! Black and white colorization was on my bucket list for a long time. So I used it to learn Affinity Photo. Learning new techniques along with new software is generally not a good idea. But AP passed on all fronts. I like it so much I even use it as my personal photo editor.

I'll update this thread from time to time if it's appreciated.
