Nice tutorial. I like that you take your time to show the actions you do in full. :)

Yes you did, I have used the clone tool a lot but I had never considered using a selection to mask off just the area to be worked on.

I can see how this can prevent accidental cloning onto an area not needed to be cloned.

So very beneficial to me to see how others do stuff.  Thanks

From looking at some of the wildlife & landscape pictures in this forum there is no doubt that there are many talented photographers here but I find myself no better off in my use of Affinity Photo just by looking at these stunning pictures. To be honest I could find the same sort of pictures just by using Google.

What would be nice is if the people uploading these pictures could supply a before and after picture and detail the steps used in Affinity Photo to get to the final results.

That way I am sure mine and others use of AP to create these stunning photos could be greatly improved. Isn't that what forums like these are all about?

Or am I missing the point and is it that professional photographers would rather not reveal their workflow in fear of increasing the competition in their chosen profession.

    Honest answers appriciated

Oh yes, it would be great if we could learn about how these great shots were processed …  :)

(On the other hand, it is also clear that there were illustrations created in Affinity Designer that left you wonder how these were probably accomplished. So there must be a reason why “Share your work” and “Tutorials” are different forum sections. Nonetheless, some context to the exhibited works would be very appreciated …  :))

What is there in the original post to be offended about? I was expecting a massive rant about Affinity and/or its users.

It would be nice if the mod team consider splitting up this subforum in three: AP Gallery, AD Gallery, and something called How it's made (totally inspired by the Discovery Channel :P ), with the first two solely a showcase, and the latter an in-depth subforum. There has been a call earlier to create AP and AD subforums, especially for the help/support, and I really hope the mod team consider this one as well.

    Gentlemen;
This forum has so much potential for us all to learn from each other. Some here have a great deal of experience as professional shooters others have less. I was teaching an adult night-school class in fly tying and I used the school gym to demonstrate fly casting. It was a very interesting experience given all the individual personalities. One of my students did a show and tell with some of his samples, his work was so good, mine paled in comparison. I asked him to describe his work flow for the class, thus the teacher was tutored by his student

It really doesn't matter where we draw our knowledge from, it matters most what we do with it. Just as important is our willingness to share with others what we love most.  Let this pass gentlemen for the sake of this forum and the goodwill it will generate over time. I don't mean to preach and hope I didn't sound so. Thank you Kieth for your generous comments, I do appreciate it as I appreciate Kodiak's  constructive critique. I will take a look at Kodiak's comments and post the results. I'm not happy with the overall comp., on this version and plan a major PP effort, stay tuned.

Last May I found myself in the company of this very obliging pair of European Stonechats on a coastal farm near where I live.

A favourite bird for photographers thanks to their habit of perching conspicuously rather than skulking, I spent a very successful couple of hours with them: important as it is to get things right "in camera", Photo has again allowed me to really bring out the best in these images:

    Stonechat (male)

    Stonechat (female)

    Stonechat (male)

All taken using the Canon 7D Mk II and 100-400mm + Canon Mk II 1.4x converter, 560mm handheld.

The Raw files were converted in either Lightroom or Photo Ninja: editing in AP consisted of DeHaze (there was no haze, but I like what the tool does); highlight management (I'm really getting to like the Highlights filter tool); plentiful use of the Inpainting brush; selective detail enhancement in the Topaz Detail plugin; and adding some warmth with the Warmth slider in the Nik Viveza plugin.

Aside from that though, these are pretty much as is - the light was superb.

Beautiful bird and good sky replacement, Aeros4.  I would not have guessed you replaced the sky if you didn't mention it.  I'm new to AP and have no idea how to do something like that in AP.  Any tips and tricks to share?

Cool take of the bird, really… but may I point out that:

    — the sky has a warmer WB than the bird?

    — the cirrus formation would contribute better to
         the composition if flipped horizontally?

    — if the bird is that sharp on the take, the clouds
         should not be?

I think you're up to something good Aeros4!

Very nicely done, Richard - colours (and balance) are fine, and the processing is particularly well executed. It would print extremely well.

Being new here, I'm not aware of any 'person dynamics,'  but since we are off topic here's my take on it.  If I post a photo, I automatically assume, and would  like CC on it.  I'm sharing to, well, share, but to also learn.  So if someone points out, 'hey, it's not really a good idea to have a tree growing out of  the person's head in a portrait,' then I would learn something and therefore (hopefully)  look for it on my next shot.  And other things like, 'a vignette would help draw attention to the subject,'  then that's something I'd at least try.

That does not mean to take all suggestions as gospel, but it can possibly open new avenues.  It gets a little more tricky when it comes to stylized images as so much of that is totally subjective, but even then trying out something new that might be suggested could shed light on the editing process.

This above is said to Not get in the middle of anything, but to share my feelings on CC. In other words, feel free to CC my posts; that's how I learn.
