Hello. You'll probably have better luck getting an answer to your question by starting a new topic of discussion; this thread is just for the unofficial PDF manual. I'm sure the mods can assist to move this over.

Very cool. Thank you. Downloading now.

Just reading your manual re; books. This is excellent. It digs into issues that would not be talked about in the company manual — such as why using the split feature in books is not a good idea; which I'm learning for myself right now.

    Thanks again.

I have no idea how big the manual would be for Publisher. But I also use audio apps such as Cubase and Digital Performer, which have traditionally had very large pdf manuals. I think from a user's perspective the manual size is not an issue, but from the coding/creation side, I can understand why silent online updates are a preferable setup. Saves time and is easier to organize. Totally agree.

I just gave it a second look — that "thing" you spoke of in the help menu with the tiny font in the TOC. It's okay I suppose. If I press command + on my Mac, I can get the font to enlarge enough to read; my eyes aren't what they used to be in terms of reading small print these days. [Note to self: get an eye transplant.]
I just upgraded to v2, so it's more like a knee jerk reflex thing: "I need a manual." And then I start reading the help files and realize 1/2 the stuff I need to know isn't there anyway. (Manuals have a habit of not going into forensic detail.)
Okay, enough of this silliness. Back to work.

Hello, fellow Affinitizens. I've been using Affinity products since the early 1900's and don't recall there being a PDF manual.
I know there's an online manual. But what if there's an apocalypse and all the electricity goes out? What then, huh, Mr. Smarty Pants?
I'm not that lost for answers, but I'm curious if anyone has [NO!] made any efforts to [NO!] make a [NO!] ... oh, never mind.

Just having some fun with this information super highway thing. But I'm curious, is this an evil ploy to get us buying that print edition book; you know, the one that costs as much as a small car? Is there a secret Affinity cabal behind keeping information in pdf form out of our hands? Perhaps someone can run with this as an idea for a new novel? (Just mention me in the dedication).

No can do. I've noticed a spike in my backup generator when clicking on that link. (It's drawing too much power from the di-lithium crystals, captain!)
Okay, jokes aside, I've probably used that feature on a number of occasions —  in addition to online tuts, etc. — but I guess I'm spoiled with always having had a nice large, picture laden PDF file to stare at in most other apps.
Perhaps using the traditional bribe system will get them onboard. I'll start with an offer of $3.00 (CDN, not USD).

Thanks, Dave. I think it would be helpful for a guy of your skill set to contribute to the betterment of these apps.

If I was doing this, I'd probably use this thread to post those findings — just to keep everything under one roof, so to speak.
But I see you've already made a separate thread, so I guess that'll be the approach.
Regardless, I'm sure the devs will be taking notes and maybe even contacting you privately to get some feedback. They seem open to a lot of our input and surely they will want to fix any font glitches that exist in version 2.

Hi I'm a font designer for the California Type Foundry, and have done the tutorials for FontLab.com.
From the font designer side, there are many good things about Affinity Apps, but also some bad things, including errors in Opentype Feature interpretation.
Also, there are some problems from the user side as well. 😕
Should I spend the time to put these problems here?

TheOtherRoland reacted to Daniel Gibert in Losing applied text styles when updating TOC (Table of Contents) or just breathing on it - advise?
In fact now I use an easiest quick 4 step solution, that always work:
Select nothing on the page (Click outside anything) On the Text styles be sure to have [No Style] selected as Paragraph and Character Style On the menu, go to Edit > Defaults > Factory Reset Then you can update your TOC without problem. (And breath on relief) This has been working correctly for me. The defaults you are resetting are basically the info of what the last used style/text is, that seems to be applied to the TOC when you updated it. This 4 steps makes sure that there is no last used styles in memory before updating the TOC, so it will use the TOC styles without adding changes.
Not only is easy to solve and save a lot of work (Just do the 4 steps before updating TOC). Also it shows what the nature the bug is. Basically, last used paragraph format is being “added” to the TOC formatting when you update it, mixing it with the TOC styles. It is for this that the bug is not consistent and results are so random.

The fact that you guys addressed this issue speaks volumes about the care that your company (Serif) takes to please its customers. In most instances, and I'm thinking mostly about audio software companies with whom I have long experience, there is a tendency to hide in the shadows and let the controversy just blow over. Cowardice, in other words. So hats off to you guys for airing this in broad daylight before the public eye.
That said, you don't owe any of us anything. I have been using Affinity Designer since what? 2016? And from the first day, I was already getting a HUGE discount just by using the software that your company makes. Since that time, I have bought the suite — all three — for both my Mac and PC at what is an incredible bargain basement price when compared to (that other company). And, it all works well. And you actually fix things that are broken.
So when you create a version 2 and sell it at the same bargain basement discount, I don't feel any tendency to criticize you for not making me feel special, whether with badges, gold stars, free trips to Italy or an additional 40% discount on top of the 40% discount you're already offering.
Let's face it, nature ensures that most animals are selfish out of a need for self-preservation. And sometimes that shows up a little too often in our behavior, especially where money and tribal bonding and affiliation is concerned.
So, from the bottom of my heart and wallet, thank you Serif for your Affinity line of products. I use them constantly and commercially and they have not let me down. I have yet to update, but if I miss out on the discount period, it will still be a bargain.

From my experience using Apple computers since 1993, this is how software sales work. You don't get new versions free, unless you've won a contest or work for the company. The people who write code have to pay for their rent and food somehow. Giving everything away free in perpetuity does not allow for that.

    Q. What do you do for a living, and can I get you to do it for free for the rest of my life as well if I pay you once? (Don't say "psycho killer," cause that would derail my joke).

The company did explain itself and why they "had to do" what they had to do, pricing wise. We are getting 40% off the upgrade price. The fact that we have to share that privilege with "outsiders" should not make us upset, unless we believe that we belong to a special club of insiders. (I write about human psychology and sociology, so these kinds of explanations tend to creep into my posts because I take my work home with me. ).

That said, I get discounts on upgrades all the time. And here at Serif, I'm getting them too. I'm happy with that. Why aren't others?
