Question - Publisher's TOC functionality in v2.

Recommended Posts

Hi folks. This is just a generic question for anyone publishing books: how is the TOC functionality in Publisher version 2 software?

I know that a few of us were having a discussion during the v1 days to come up with a work-around for the font family and style always changing with each new update to the TOC. Does this still happen? Any other issues?

I haven't upgraded to v2 yet and am looking for perks to make me move beyond v1 — which is working perfectly fine for my needs atm.

If you did wasn't to upgrade, this is a good time to do it, as there's a sale going on that will save you an additional 25% off the already-discounted Universal License upgrade price.

Just going by memory, it was a text styles issue where the text style was being lost in the TOC text when the reset or recreate TOC was clicked.

Maybe someone who dealt with this issue before will also see my post and help confirm. I found a work around, so it didn't bother me afterwards too much.

No pressing urgency to update. I've seen a few crash reports that make me nervous. :)

Just upgraded. Now it's too late to turn back. Your devious marketing tricks have worked to win me over.

I've never used v.1 but for my first book with APub2, I had to struggle a while to get my TOC to behave properly. This powerful function needs to be harnessed!

  • With the very first version 2, refreshing multiple TOCs resulted sometimes in the app crashing. — It appeared soon to have been corrected.
  • Then I had repeated strange formattings when refreshing the TOCs (text in all caps, funny indents and so on). It took me a while to track down all the style conflicts — appearing in particular when I modified cascading styles (for example, the Title style based on the Body style, based on the Base style) or redefined a style using the "Update style based on selection" button. — This had unexpected repercussions on the TOC until I modified each of the predefined TOC styles (quite a labour, until I respected adequately their own cascade structure…).
  • Finally, I had to be taught how to have separated TOC (chapters, figures, …) according to different styles applied in the text. — I would never have found that alone.

Now everything is behaving as I want it to.

In conclusion, in my opinion TOC is not the easiest function but it works well, after some trial and error…

Thanks, Oufti. I have my own book template that I use now to avoid those earlier hardships. But I haven't tried to revisit that process yet.

I attribute it to PTSD. :D
